Introduction
• Sports have been an integral
part of human civilization,
reflecting cultural values, social
structures, and individual
aspirations. However, gender
disparity in sports has been a
persistent issue, with female
athletes facing challenges such
as unequal pay, lack of
representation, and stereotypes.
This project investigates the role
of gender in sports, examining
participation, performance, and
representation, while exploring
efforts made to promote gender
equality.
1/3/2025 HASSAN 8
Objectives
• To analyze the participation
trends of men and women in
various sports.
• To understand the challenges
faced by female athletes.
• To explore the impact of gender
stereotypes on sports.
• To assess the role of policies and
organizations in promoting
gender equality.
1/3/2025 HASSAN 9
Materials and Methodology
• Data Collection:
– Surveys of students, teachers, and
sports coaches on gender perception in
sports.
– Review of articles, reports, and case
studies on gender disparity.
• Observation:
– Analysis of participation in school-level
sports competitions by gender.
– Study of media coverage of male and
female sports.
• Interviews:
– Interaction with male and female
athletes to understand their
experiences.
• Analysis:
– Comparison of data on representation,
prize money, sponsorships, and
participation rates.
1/3/2025 HASSAN 10
Theoretical Framework
• History of Gender in Sports:
– Evolution of women’s participation in
sports.
– Key milestones such as Title IX (USA),
which mandated equal opportunities.
• Gender Stereotypes:
– Perception of some sports as “masculine”
(e.g., rugby) and others as “feminine”
(e.g., gymnastics).
– Impact of stereotypes on participation.
• Challenges Faced by Women in Sports:
– Unequal pay and prize money.
– Limited sponsorships and media coverage.
– Lack of infrastructure and opportunities.
• Efforts to Promote Gender Equality:
– Role of organizations like the International
Olympic Committee (IOC).
– Campaigns like #This Girl Can and UN
Women’s initiatives.
1/3/2025 HASSAN 11
Observations and Results
• Participation Trends:
– Male students constituted 60% of school
sports teams, while females constituted
40%.
– Male-dominated sports like cricket and
football saw lower female participation.
• Media Coverage:
– Male sports events received 70% of media
coverage, compared to 30% for female
events.
• Perceptions:
– 80% of survey respondents believed that
societal stereotypes discourage female
participation in sports.
• Challenges Highlighted by Athletes:
– Female athletes emphasized the need for
better facilities and financial support.
– Male athletes acknowledged societal
biases but believed opportunities are
increasing for women.
1/3/2025 HASSAN 12
Discussion
• Gender Gap in Participation:
– Despite progress, significant gaps
remain in participation rates,
especially in rural areas.
• Stereotypes and Cultural Barriers:
– Stereotypes associating sports with
masculinity discourage female
involvement.
• Policy Implementation:
– Policies promoting equal opportunities
have made a difference, but awareness
and enforcement remain inconsistent.
• Media Representation:
– Increased media attention to female
athletes can inspire greater
participation and break stereotypes.

Conclusion
• The study reveals that while strides have
been made towards gender equality in
sports, challenges such as stereotypes,
unequal representation, and financial
disparities persist. Promoting awareness,
increasing opportunities, and supporting
female athletes are critical to achieving
gender parity.
Suggestions
• Conduct awareness programs to challenge
stereotypes about gender roles in sports.
• Ensure equal funding and facilities for male
and female sports teams.
• Encourage media to provide balanced
coverage of male and female sports events.
• Organize workshops and campaigns to
inspire girls to participate in sports.
