CHEF’S KISS

By: Ruth
CHARACTERS

Cameron (19) (either gender) A shy, dorky sweetheart. Cooking has been their passion since they

were very young. They are head-over-heels in love with Wylee.

Wylee (18) (either gender) A laidback goofball. They’ve been working as a waiter/waitress in

the diner as long as Cameron has been a chef there. They’re in love with Cameron.

Chris (19) A sly guy with a sarcastic sense of humor. He’s one of Cameron’s close friends and

the other chef in the kitchen.

Willow (18) A caring, sisterly girl who likes to tease her friends. She’s the other waitress who

helps Wylee in the restaurant.

Customer(s) Annoying inconveniences personified.

SETTING

A retro-style diner decorated in eye-catching, bright colors. Stage left represents the sitting area

of the din, there are a few tables and chairs. Stage right represents the kitchen, there’s a counter,

a stove, and a sink. Cameron and Chris are already in the kitchen, starting to get some food on

the stove. The lights are dimmed on stage right. Willow is in the seating area, wiping down

tables to put the condiments on.

(WYLEE enters through the doors of the diner and WILLOW looks up from the table she’s

cleaning.)

WILLOW: You’re late again, Wylee!

WYLEE: I know, I know and I’m sorry! It’s just been hard for me to fall asleep at a reasonable

time lately.

WILLOW: (Mockingly.) Oh, you poor thing! Maybe if you’d stop thinking about how much

you looooooove Cameron you could-

(WYLEE puts her/his hand on WILLOW’s mouth to muffle her/his words, looking back at the

window of the kitchen to make sure no one heard.)

WYLEE: (Whisper-yelling.) Shut up! Do you want him (/her) to hear you?

(WILLOW giggles, pulling WYLEE’s hand off her mouth.)

WILLOW: Someone has to tell him (/her), because you’re clearly not going to.

WYLEE: I will! I just need some time, you can’t just rush these things you know?

WILLOW: (Rolling her eyes.) In your case it wouldn’t be rushing, Lee. You’ve been saying “I

need more time,” for the past three months!

WYLEE: Three months isn’t that long!

WILLOW: Sure, Lee. Sure.

(WILLOW tosses the cleaning rag in her hand to WYLEE and turns to walk to the back. The

lights dim on stage left. Lights up on stage right.)

WILLOW: Now, finish wiping down these tables so I can set them. I’m gonna go get the

condiments and napkins.

WYLEE: Alright!

(WILLOW walks into the kitchen and grabs some salt and pepper shakers off the counter as well

as some napkins too. As she does this, she overhears CAMERON and CHRIS’ conversation.)

CHRIS: Sure, Cam. Wylee will definitely know how you feel if you don’t say anything

whatsoever.

CAMERON: (Whining.) You know that’s not what I meant!

CHRIS: (With annoyance.) Then what did you mean by “I’m not gonna tell her (/him).”

CAMERON: I just… I need more time. You can’t just rush these things you know?

(CHRIS rolls his eyes. A beat.)

CHRIS: You know what?

CAMERON: What?

CHRIS: Two weeks. I’ll give you two weeks to tell her (/him), Cam.

CAMERON: (Worried.) Well, what’s gonna happen after two weeks?

(CHRIS opens his mouth to say something, but WILLOW interrupts him.)

WILLOW: You can’t just tell someone’s crush that they like them. (To CAMERON.) It’s ok to

go at your own pace, Cam.

CAMERON: Thanks.
WILLOW: No problem, Cam.

(Lights up on stage left. WILLOW walks back into the dining area and starts setting shakers and

napkins on the tables. WYLEE stuffs her/his towel in the pocket of her/his apron and walks to the

door to turn on the open sign.)

WYLEE: We’re open!

WILLOW, CHRIS, & CAMERON: Thank you!

(Once the restaurant was open, the customers started flooding in and filling up the seats. The

orders began to pile up as WILLOW and WYLEE gave them to CHRIS and CAMERON.

WYLEE walks up to another customer to take their order.)

WYLEE: Can you repeat your order one more time for me, miss?

CUSTOMER 1: O. M. G. I asked for a cheeseburger and french fries but replace the burger

with lettuce and replace the fries with tomatoes.

WYLEE: So, you want a salad?

CUSTOMER 1: NO!

WYLEE: Oookay…

(WYLEE walks over to the kitchen window to tell CAMERON and CHRIS the customer’s order.)

WYLEE: Ok, the customer wants a cheeseburger and fries but instead of a burger she wants

lettuce, and instead of fries she wants tomatoes.

CHRIS: So, a salad?

CAMERON: Yeah, it sounds like she just wants a salad.

(WYLEE smiles at CAMERON.)

WYLEE: That’s exactly what I said! (Leaning in.) Just make her a salad, I can tell she wouldn’t

be able to tell the difference.

CAMERON: Yeah, I didn’t think so.

(WYLEE winks at CAMERON and goes back to the seating area to continue serving and taking

orders.)

CAMERON: (Some type of lovey-dovey laugh.)

CHRIS: (Makes a fake, exaggerated gagging noise at CAMERON.)

(WILLOW walks back to the kitchen window to grab any ready-to-go orders. She stops and does

a double-take at CAMERON.)

WILLOW: What’s got you all smiley?

CAMERON: Nothing-

CHRIS: Wylee was flirting with him (/her).

WILLOW: (Knowingly.) Oh… (Small pause.) I didn’t think she (/he) would-

CUSTOMER 2: (Interrupting obnoxiously.) WAITERRRRR! WHERE ARE MY CURLY

FRIES!

CAMERON: You didn’t think she (/he) would what?

WILLOW: Nothing. Gotta go!

(WILLOW grabs the plate of fries and rushes back to the customer in the dining area, leaving a

confused CAMERON.)

CAMERON: (To CHRIS.) Do you really think she (/he) was flirting with me? (To

himself/herself) Does she (/he) like me back? What if-

CHRIS: I don’t understand how you’re so oblivious. (He sighs, setting another full plate on the

window.) Hurry up and finish the salad.

CAMERON: Oh, right! The salad.

(WILLOW approaches a table and gives CUSTOMER 2 their order. She walks over to the table

that WYLEE is serving and helps her place the dishes on the table.)

WILLOW: So, you were flirting with Cam? (Proudly.) Look at you making the first move.

WYLEE: Hm? What do you mean?

(They both walk back to the kitchen.)

WILLOW: Don’t play dumb. Chris told me you were flirting with him (/her).

WYLEE: Well, I winked at him (/her), but that doesn’t mean I was flirting technically.

WILLOW: (Rolling her eyes.) Whatever you say.

(WILLOW grabs another order from the window and starts to walk away. WYLEE does the same

but gets stopped by another customer.)

CUSTOMER 3: Excuse me, dear. Do you guys sell spaghetti here?

WYLEE: We do not ma’am, sorry.

CUSTOMER 3: Are you sure? (Pointing at the menu.) I swear it says “spaghetti” right here.

WYLEE: (Leaning over to read the menu.) Ma’am, that says cheeseburger.

CUSTOMER 3: Oh, dear. I knew I shouldn’t have left my house without my reading glasses.

(WYLEE walks away with an awkward look on her face to deliver the meal in her hand to the

next customer. Back in the kitchen, CHRIS is trying to convince CAMERON to make a move

since WYLEE has already started.)

CAMERON: What do you mean “flirt back?” I can’t flirt! I don’t know how!

CHRIS: You haven’t even tried. (Leaning out of the kitchen window.) Hey, Wylee! Come over

here for a second!

(WYLEE walks over to the kitchen window.)

WYLEE: What’s up?

CHRIS: Cameron wants to tell you something.

CAMERON: (Looking around nervously.) I think you’re uh… really good at folding napkins.

WYLEE: (Confused.) Thank you?

(WYLEE walks back to continue waiting tables.)

CHRIS: Really?
CAMERON: I panicked!

CHRIS: (Sarcastic.) I couldn’t tell!

(It’s quiet between the two as they continue to cook when WYLEE and WILLOW come back to

the window to pick up some more orders. CAMERON manages to muster up some courage and

speaks up.)

CAMERON: Uhm, Wylee?

WYLEE: (Turning to face CAMERON.) Yeah?

CAMERON: It’s uh… it’s our break time!

(CAMERON grabs WYLEE’s hand and takes her/him into the kitchen.)

WYLEE: Cam there’s still a lot of customers out there so we don’t have much time for a break.

CAMERON: The customers are none of my concern right now. (He/she takes both of WYLEE’s

hands.)

WYLEE: (Confused and a bit flustered.) Oh?

(CHRIS and WILLOW are watching in anticipation in the background.)

CAMERON: Okay, (Takes in a deep breath.) I wanna tell you something.

WYLEE: Okay…

CAMERON: I have feelings for you. Like romantic feelings.

(WYLEE’s eyes widen in surprise. There’s a moment of silence between the two.)

WYLEE: Wow…

CAMERON: (Panicking a bit.) I’m sorry if you don’t feel the same way this is probably really

awkward for you right now and-

(WYLEE cuts off his/her words with a tight hug. CAMERON freezes, then returns the hug. After

a few seconds they break apart.)

WYLEE: Cameron, I like you too. In a romantic way.

(CHRIS and WILLOW celebrate in the background and CAMERON and WYLEE look at them.

They stop doing their little celebratory dance so as not to interrupt the moment.)

CAMERON: So, does this mean you’ll go out on a date with me?

WYLEE: (Playfully hitting CAMERON’s shoulder.) Of course it does!

(WILLOW is so excited that she can’t help but join in the moment. She runs over to the two of

them and hugs them both.)

WILLOW: Aww! You guys are going to make such a cute couple! You know what? You two

should go on that date right now, Chris and I can take over for the day!

CHRIS: Hey, I never agreed to-

WILLOW: Shut up, Chris! They’re having a moment!

(CHRIS lets out an exaggerated sigh and goes back to cooking.)

WILLOW: Well? What are you guys waiting for? Go on that date!

CAMERON & WYLEE: Okay!

(The two of them exit on stage right, which is the back door of the kitchen.)
