chloride (NaCl). However, the student mistakenly added 10 g of NaCl to only 500 mL of
water instead of 1000 mL. Discuss the implications of this mistake on the molarity and the
colligative properties of the solution.

(a) A chemistry student is conducting an experiment to determine the freezing point
depression constant (Kf) of a solvent. The student dissolves 10.0 g of an unknown non-
electrolyte solute in 200 g of the solvent. The freezing point of the pure solvent is -5.0°C,
and the freezing point of the solution is found to be -7.5°C. Calculate the value of Kf for the
solvent.
(b)Why are azeotropic mixtures considered challenging to separate compared to non-
azeotropic mixtures?
23 The vapour pressures of pure liquids A and B are 450 and 700 mm Hg at 350 K respectively. 03

28 An alkyl cyanide ‘A’ can be converted to an aldehyde ‘B’ through Stephen’s reduction, 03
whose trichloro derivative ‘C’ is used to prepare DDT. From the same alkyl cyanide ‘A’ we
can prepare a ketone ‘D’ by using some suitable reagent. This ketone is used during
Finkelstein reaction.

The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal choice
and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions
that follow :
29 In case of abnormal molar masses, the values deviate from the experimentally predicted ones 04
when calculating molar masses, they are determined using colligative properties. When
solute dissolve in a solvent, they can either associate or dissociate. This affects the number
of particles in the solution, leading to discrepancies in molar masses.

(a) Calculate the van’t Hoff factor for K2HgI4, if it undergoes complete dissociation.
(b) A solution of acetic acid in benzene shows an abnormal molar mass. Given that
acetic acid associates in benzene, calculate the van’t Hoff factor if the experimentally
determined molar mass is twice the expected molar mass.
(c) You have a solution of KCl in water, and you notice that the freezing point
depression is greater than what would be expected for a non-dissociating solute. How
would you determine the degree of dissociation of KCl using the freezing point
depression data?

(c)A solution of acetic acid in benzene shows a lower than expected freezing point
depression. Explain the phenomenon in terms of molecular interactions and the resulting
molecular mass.
30 Ethers have excellent solvation properties; it dissolves both polar and nonpolar reactants 04
leading to faster reaction rates. Ibuprofen can be synthesized through the Friedel Craft’s
acylation reaction. Ethers being non-reactive, is an ideal medium for such reactions as it
prevents the unwanted side reactions and enhances the yield of the desired products.Ethers
have gained prominence in organic synthesis as environment friendly solvents due to their
low toxicity, low reactivity and biodegradability.Traditional solvents like cyclohexane are
being replaced by ethers because ethers have low boiling point can easily be separated by
distillation.
Answer the following questions.
(a) Ionic compounds do not dissolve in ether. Mention a practical application where this
property is put to use.
(b) Diethyl ether is mixed with an alkane. How will you separate them and produce absolute
diethyl ether?
(c)Convert: (i) Diethyl ether to ethyl propanoate (one step)
(ii) Propene to allyl phenyl ether

The following questions are long answer type and carry 5 marks each. All questions

31 Krishna took three amines U, V, and W. The three amines were added to Hinsberg’s reagent.
The products were added to aq. NaOH and the observations were tabulated as follows:

(ii) Amine [B] on reacting with benzene sulphonyl chloride gave a
product which is insoluble in water.
(iii) The acid [C] on reacting with Tollen’s reagent formed a silver mirror.
Identify [A], [B] and [C] .Also explain the reactions.
