 HIGHLIGHTS

I. REGISTERED COMPANIES AS ON 30th June 2018

1. The total number of companies registered in the country as on 30th June, 2018
stood at 17,79,761. Of them 5,43,467 companies were closed. 1,390 companies were
assigned dormant status as per the Companies Act, 2013; 6,117 were under liquidation;
38,858 companies were in the process of being struck-off. After being struck off previously,
103 companies were in the process of being re- activated. Taking the above into account,
there were 11,89,826 active companies as on 30th June 2018.

2. Out of the 543,467 closed companies, 10,532 companies were liquidated/dissolved;

497,742 companies were declared defunct (and hence struck-off after issuance of notice
u/s 248). 21,367 companies were amalgamated/ merged with other companies; 9,032
companies were converted to Limited Liability Partnership (LLB) and 4,794 were converted
to LLP and dissolved. Table-1.1 presents the summary picture of companies count as on
30th June, 2018.

3. Out of the 11,89,826 active companies, 11,81,877 were limited by shares; 7,518
were limited by guarantee and 431 were unlimited companies. Out of the companies
limited by shares, 71,506 were public, 11,10,371 were private including 18,153 one
person companies. Among the public limited companies, 7,213 were listed (Table 1.2).

4. State/UT-wise distribution of registered companies indicates that Maharashtra has

the highest number of companies (353,556), followed by Delhi (322,044) and West Bengal
(197,823). Amongst ‘Active Companies’, Maharashtra has the maximum number of active
companies (234,151), followed by Delhi (216,286) and West Bengal (134,336) as on 30th
June, 2018 (Table-1.3).

5. Economic-activity wise classification of active companies reveals that highest

number of companies were in Business Services (370,542) followed by Manufacturing
(235,623), Trading (153,919) and Construction (105,956). Business Services comprise of
Information Technology, Research & Development and other business activities (such as
law, audit & accounts and consultancy, etc. (Table-1.4 and Chart 1.1).

II. ONE PERSON COMPANY

6. Up to 30th June, 2018, a total number of 18,153 One Person Companies (OPCs)
were registered with collective authorized capital of Rs. 461.06 crore. Economic activity
wise classification of OPCs up to 30th June, 2018 reveals that the highest number of OPCs
were in Business Services (11,613) followed by Community, Personal & Social Services
(1,908), Manufacturing (1,385) and Trading (1,296) (Chart 2.1). During the month of
June, 2018, a total of 441 OPC were registered with authorized capital of Rs. 12.90 crore.
Economic activity wise classification of OPC during the month reveals that highest number
of 292 OPCs were registered in Business Services, followed by 53 in Community, personal
& Social Services and 27 in Manufacturing (Table 2.1).

III. TREND OF REGISTRATION OF NEW COMPANIES

7. An analysis of registration of new companies during June 2016 to June 2018 indicates
that monthly registration of companies has increased after hitting lowest of 6,301
Companies in November 2016 (Chart 3.1). A total of 9,042 companies were registered in
June, 2018 as compared to 9,045 in June 2017. A decrease (16%) in registration of
companies has been witnessed in June 2018 over the previous month. A total of 1,229
LLPs were registered in June 2018 as compared to 2,720 LLPs in June 2017 (Table 3.1).

IV. REGISTRATION OF NEW COMPANIES DURING JUNE 2018

8. During the month of June, 2018 a total of 9,042 companies were registered with
collective authorized capital of Rs. 7,197.66 crore. Of them 8,997 companies were
registered as Companies Limited by Shares with authorized capital of Rs. 7,197.60 crore;
45 companies were registered as Limited by Guarantees with authorized capital of Rs. 6
lakh (Table-4.1).

9. Economic-activity wise classification of companies registered during June, 2018

(Table-4.2 and Chart 4.1) reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Business
Services (4,740) followed by Manufacturing (971), Community, personal & Social Services
(882), Trading (754) and Construction (485).

10. During June, 2018, 1,659 (18.35%) companies were registered in Maharashtra,
followed by 1,211 (13.39%) in Delhi, and 916 (10.13%) in Uttar Pradesh (Table-4.3).

V. Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)

11. As on 30th June 2018, a total number of 114,694 LLPs were active in the country.
About 82.09% active LLPs (94,155 in number) have obligation of contribution less than or
equal to Rs. 5 lakh each; and only about 3.18% (3,649 in number) of LLPs have obligation
of contribution above Rs.1 crore each (Table-5.1 and Chart 5.1)

12. Broad economic sector wise classification of active LLPs as on 30th June 2018
reveals that Service sector account for 87,659 LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture
sectors accounting for 24,887 and 2,147 respectively. Economic-activity wise
classification of active LLPs as on 30th June 2018 further reveals that a large number of
LLPs are in Business Services (47,285) followed by Trading (14,320), Manufacturing
(13,496) and Real Estate & Renting (11,571) (Table-5.2 & Chart 5.2).

13. During April 2018 to June 2018, a total of 5,421 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
were registered with collective obligation of contribution of Rs. 2,670.34 crore. Economic
activity wise classification of LLPs during April to June 2018 indicates that highest
number of 2,015 LLPs were registered in Business Services followed by 666 in Trading,
619 in Manufacturing and 659 in Real Estate and Renting (Table 5.3 and Chart 5.3).

VI. FOREIGN COMPANIES

14. As on 30th June 2018, a total of 4,678 foreign companies were registered in India,
of which 3,379 of them were active. During April 2018 to June 2018, a total of 25 foreign
companies were registered in India including 8 in Maharashtra (32%) followed by 6 (24%)
in Delhi and 5 (20%) in Haryana. Economic activity wise classification of foreign companies
reveals that highest number of 12 were registered in Business Services followed by 3 in
each Manufacturing and Mining & Quarrying. (Table 6.1 and chart 6.1).
