4. PROCESS DESCRIPTION
A. PROCESS DESCRIPTION:
The proposed WTP will be constructed at Khanapalli Village, Wanaparthy to treat
75 MLD raw water from proposed Raw Water Pump House structure. The entire
plant is hydraulic designed and the water flows by gravity from Cacade Aerator to
Clear Water Sump and the sludge generated from clariflocculator flows by gravity
to the Sludge Sump and thereafter Drying Beds. The Filtrate will flow out to
nearest drain.
The plant shall comprise the following units.
i. Cascade
ii. Stilling Chamber
iii. Parshall Flume
iv. Distribution Chamber
v. Flash Mixer
vi. Clariflocculator
vii. Rapid Sand Gravity Filters
viii. Bypass Channel
ix. Chemical House
x. Chlorination Building
xi. Backwash OHT
xii. Back Wash Water Recirculation Tank
xiii. Clear Water Reservoir
i. Cascade Aerator
The raw water shall be pumped to the cascade aerator from the intake structure. The
cascade aerator is in circular shape of RCC structure with inlet shaft pipe. The
aerator shall have 7 Nos number of trays (1.0m x 0.3m) as per design. The water
enters from inlet shaft pipe to cascade aerator and then collected launder after
falling through all the trays. The purpose of cascade aerator will introduce the
natural air to the water and reduce the iron present in the water.
Floor area required 0.015 to 0.045 Sqm /Cum/hour
Floor area provided 0.032 Sqm /Cum/hour

Velocity through inlet pipe 0.73 m /sec (limit = 1.0 to 1.5 m/sec.)
ii. Stilling Chamber
The water from cascade aerator launder enters into stilling chamber. The purpose of
providing stilling chamber to reduce the turbulence before the water enters into
parshall flume.
iii. Parshall Flume
Parshall flume is the unit used for the flow measurement of the raw water flow. The
Parshall flume consists of three principal sections i.e., coverging section on
upstream, throat and diverging section on downstream. The floor of the converging
section is horizontal. Parshall flumes constructed in RCC. There will be a Flow
indicator to measure the flow and online pH meter & turbidity meter to measure pH
& Turbidity, accordingly dosing will done. Alum dosing shall be added in this
channel. The raw water after parshall flume shall flow by gravity to Distribution
Chamber.
iv. Distribution Chamber
The flow will be divided into two portion in distribution chamber. It is constructed
in RCC.
v. Flash Mixer
Mechanical Flash mixers are provided to ensure rapid mixing of coagulant
throughout the volume of water to create homogeneous dispersion of coagulant.
Propeller type impellers are proposed in the flash mixer with high revolving speeds
ranging from 400 to 1400 rpm. Vertical strips or baffles projecting 1/10 to 1/12 of
tank dia at a minimum of 4 places along the walls of the mixer shall be provided to
reduce vortex formation or rotational movement of water about the impeller shaft.
The mechanical agitator drive will be an electric motor with continuous duty,
operating through a reduction gear. Power of 1 to 3 watts/m 3 of flow per hour is
usually for efficient flash mixing.
vi. Clarifloculator:
In this unit, coagulation, flocculation and clarification processes are effectively
incorporated. The coagulation raw water from the flash mixer will water in to the
clarifloculator through the central shaft at a velocity between 0.2 to 0.6 m/sec. The
detention time in the flocculation zone will be 30 minutes. In the flocculation zone,
4 flocculating paddles are placed equidistantly, which rotate on their vertical axis at
slow speeds. The detention time in the clarifying zone shall be 2.50 hours with a
surface loading rate 40 cum/Sqm/day. The floor slope of the clarifloculator will be

10% Scrappers shall be provided with inwardly ranking rotating blades for pushing
the settled sludge in to the sludge pit. The clarifloculator and the launder shall be
constructed in RCC. An RCC platform shall be provided around at the top of the
outer wall of the clarifier. The clarified water shall overflow to the filter beds by
gravity and bottom sludge to the nearby drain.
vii. Rapid Sand Filter beds:
The filter beds shall ne designed and operated on the principle of “Declining Rate
Principle” and will conform to the recommended design as per the latest edition of
CPHEEO Manual. The Filter house will be constructed in RCC to ensure water
tightness.
Operation of Filter
Clarified water enters into filter beds. Filtration and backwash processes are
controlled with related to loss of head. Back washing arrangements for Filters beds
are provided with (both Air & water). The under drainage system shall consist of a
pipes and lateral. The filter beds and pipe gallery shall be covered with all-round
brick wall and roof slab.
viii. Bypass Channel:
Bypass Channel will be provided from Distribution Chamber to filter inlet channel
to bypass the clarifloculator during cleaning/maintenance period.
ix. Backwash Tank:
The proposed backwash tank will be of OHT type. When the flow drops due to head
loss across the filter bed, then the filters will be taken up for back wash with help of
air and water. Back wash tank is filled with filtered water with help of centrifugal
pump provided in pipe gallery.
x. Chemical House:
The chemical house shall be RCC framed structure. The chemicals will be stored in
ground floor, adequate capacity of storage will be provided. The dosing tank shall
be constructed in first floor in RCC, inside of the alum dosing tank will be protected
with acid resistant tiles. Dosing tank will be equipped with agitator for preparation
of dosing chemicals. The room shall be provided with proper ventilation
arrangements.
xi. Chlorination Building:
The chlorination building shall be RCC framed structure. The tonners will be stored
in tonner room and necessary lifting arrangements are provided for replacing of

same. The vacuum type chlorinator will be provided. The room shall be provided
with proper ventilation arrangements.
xii. Backwash Water Recirculation Tank:
The purpose of providing the recirculation tank the water loss during the backwash
operation. Back wash from filter beds will be collected in recirculation tank through
back was channel. The channel water will be pumped to stilling chamber for
recycling purpose. Adequate detention time for storage will be provided for the
same. The tank shall be constructed in RCC.
xiii. Clear water Reservoir:
Filtered water from filter beds collected in pure water channel in the pipe gallery
and conveyed to clear water sump through the channel. Post chlorination is added in
this channel.
