The T1s are responsible for implementing and maintaining these requirements as a minimum
standard within each of their manufacturing units, this includes approved sub contractors. T1s
will appoint a Safety Officer who will regularly audit all areas of the manufacturing units to
confirm compliance.

Metal Free policy must be introduced and trained in the Orientation program for all newcomer
staffs. Trainings by T1 should be done on regular basis for all staffs, maximum in three months
period.

If any order is found by aSL customer to have contained broken needles or other metal
contamination with a diameter ≥ 1.2 mm, the manufacturer will be responsible for a punitive
charge.

The punitive charge shall be USD 40,000 per order, effective from April 1st 2014.

In addition, the manufacturer will also be fully liable for all costs incurred by aSL customer for
any additional screening for metal in the particular order.

3.1.1 Metal Free Requirements

3.1.1.1 Product Development

Development samples must be metal detected to ensure the following:
 Free from metal contamination
 All accessories pass through the metal detector. Should an item fail metal detection the
T1 must inform the relevant merchandiser in the LO immediately. The merchandiser will
then work with CCDA/Materials Development/T2 to ensure this is resolved before bulk
production.

3.1.1.2 Raw Materials Warehouse

Warehouses must be kept clean and tidy to avoid any potential contamination of the fabric. The
following items must not be used:
 Staples, metal paper clips, drawing pins, pins
 Other small similar metal items which could contaminate fabrics
Tools such as the following must be controlled using shadow boxes, when not in use all items
must be stored in the shadow box; under no circumstances are these to be left lying around
unattended:
 Large scissors must have clear ID and match with shadow box
 Stanley knives
 Screw drivers
 Other sharp objects
 Hand scissors must be secure

 Each work area must have a secure safety box with locks and in charge person, where
hazardous metal items can be safely disposed of. This box must be checked during the
safety audits, including the destruction record

Shadow Box Examples:

3.1.1.3 Trim & Accessories Warehouse

All accessories must be tested through a metal detector as part of the inspection process, at the
adidas-Group STD 1.2mm
o 100% MD for all metal accessories (including hangtags made from recycled
materials) and all type of embroidered accessories such as badges etc.
o Minimum 10% MD from each accessories' lot should be done for all the rest
accessories' type (including all packing materials)

3.1.1.4 Cutting Room

General
The cutting room must be kept clean and tidy to avoid any potential contamination of fabric or cut
work. The following items must not be used:
 Staples, metal paper clips, drawing pins, pins
 Hand scissors must be secured at all times

Laying Up
Pins must not be used to secure the marker to the fabric. Other methods such as clamps should
be used. Clamps must be clean and kept in an orderly manner.

Pins for Matching

Pins may be used for matching checks/stripes, however the following rules must be followed at
all times:
 Matching pins must be stored in a secure location which can only be accessed by a
supervisor/manager level
 Records must be kept for every lay using matching pins, records must record:
o Total number of pins in cutting room
o Lay no
o Date and time
o No of pins issued
o Issued to
o Date and time returned
o No of pins returned
o At any given time an auditor must be able to count all the pins in use in the
cutting room and this must tally with the matching pins issue records

Band Knife
When a band knife is used to cut panels which will then be fused, the vacuum must be fitted to
the band knife to prevent metal dust being trapped in cut panels which would then cause
problems with metal detection.

Fleece or Textured Fabrics

Metal combs are used during the manufacturing process; these often break and become trapped
in the fabric. Therefore these cut panels must be metal detected prior to being released to the
sewing floor to ensure cut work is free from contaminants. The recommended STD for metal
detection at this stage is 1.0mm.

3.1.1.5 Embellishments
The adidas-Group needle procedure must be followed at all times in the embroidery/quilting
areas or other areas using needles. Needle breakage is often high for these processes; therefore
embroidered/quilted panels must be metal detected prior to being released to the sewing floor.

The recommended STD for metal detection at this stage is 1.0mm.

A hand held metal detector and magnets must be available to help find broken needle parts.
Used needles must not be used for embroidery placement. Limited number of needles should be
kept on the machine head based on the daily program .Broken/used needles (machine, head and
needle number should be recorded) and stock needle reports must be available in the area.

3.1.2.3 Conveyor - Metal Detection Procedure

 All garments must be passed through a metal detection system as outlined in this
manual
 The metal detectors must be bought from and set up by an approved supplier
 After metal detector machine being set as per adidas 1.2mm standard the setting panel
must be locked.

 The STD for adidas-Group metal detection is 1.2mm; if products have only a small
amount of metal accessories then metal detectors may be set to 1.0mm or better.
 The adidas-Group STD is double metal detection using the L shape, however, twin head
metal detectors may be used if garments do not have many metal accessories.
 Garments being metal detected using double metal detection L shape system must be
passed thru in different directions to increase the chances of finding small pieces of
metal contamination. For example the first time, the garment is at right angles to the
magnetic field and the second time it is in parallel. On a twin head metal detector the
angle of the heads are different which has a similar affect to the double L shape metal
detection system.
 If a garment passes double metal detection or double head metal detection it is
immediately scanned and packed. The box must be sealed in the MD room prior to going
into the finished goods warehouse.
 If a garment is rejected by the metal detector it must be re tested, if it passes, it must be
re tested 3 times in different directions before going to scan and pack. If it fails a second
or third time then it must immediately be placed into a secure box which is only for
contaminated garments. This box must be emptied daily or more frequently if required,
by the supervisor or manager in charge. These garments must then be hand held metal
detected to find the contamination, if this is successful garments can be repaired and re
metal detected. If the contamination can not be identified then the garment must be
destroyed.

3.1.2.4 Calibration and Service Requirements

Requirements are as follows:
 Metal detector belts must be cleaned daily to avoid static interference with the magnetic
field
 Each individual metal detector must be checked in 9 positions (LHS, middle, RHS on
bottom, middle and top of the metal detection magnetic field) as a minimum this must be
done every hour and at the start of any new shift or stoppage time. For example first
thing in the morning the machine must be calibrated before use, same would apply after
a lunch break or any period when the machine has not been used.

Stand height should be adjusted according tunnel height.

Test Card with Stand:

Card placed as much
possible to the top of
the tunnel.

Test Card with Stand:

Card placed at the
middle of the tunnel

Test Card only.

 A quarantine (1 hour holding area) area must be available just outside the metal
detection room where stock is held between calibration checks. This is to ensure that if
the calibration was ok at 9am but then failed at 10am, stock which was metal detected
between 9 and 10 can be easily identified so it can be metal detected again. Failure to do
this risks contamination within adidas-Group products, which is unacceptable.
 Each individual metal detector must be serviced every 6months as a minimum by the
machine supplier, records must be kept.
