Density is a physical property of an object that combines the
space that an object takes up and the amount of matter
present in the object.
Substances with low density will rest on
top.
Substances with high density will rest on
bottom.
Describe what is happening to the
molecules at each phase:
The solid molecules are tightly

they are less tightly packed. In a

PURE SUBSTANCES
& MIXTURES
PURE SUBSTANCE
A substance that is made up of only one kind
of particle.
Diamonds are made of pure carbon. Pure water is
made of pure H2O molecules.
Mixtures
WHAT IS A MIXTURE?
Two or more substances combined together.
There are two types of mixtures:
heterogeneous and homogeneous.
HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE
A mixture that is not uniform throughout. Individual
parts of the mixture can be observed and separated.
Examples: sand, trail mix, salad, ice water
HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE
A gas, liquid, or solid mixture that is uniform
throughout. The particles cannot be easily
separated from each other.
Examples: milk, air, sugar dissolved in water

a solute.
Examples: Salt water, lemonade, air in our
atmostphere
WHAT IS A SOLVENT?
In a solution, the solvent is the larger amount
of solution.
Example: In salt water, water is the solvent.
“SOLVENT DISSOLVES IT”
WHAT IS A SOLUTE?
In a solution, the solute is the substance being
dissolved.
Example: In salt water, salt is the solute.
HOW DO I REMEMBER THIS?
A thief steals the LOOT. When the police
come, he hides it in the VENT.
SolUTE goes in the solVENT

Today, you will be exploring the physical
properties of several elements. As you
explore, use the table below to record your
findings.
Symbol- you can find each element symbol on the periodic table
Luster- terms used to describe luster include glassy, pearly, metallic, dull, and
sub-metallic
Malleability- is the substance able to be bent? Write yes or no
Conductivity- does the substance conduct electricity? Write yes or no
Magnetism- is the substance attracted to the magnet? Write yes or no
Classification: do you believe this substance is a metal, non-metal, or metalloid?
** Reminder that all metals, all non-metals, and all metalloids share similar properties **

Rare earth elements aren’t actually RARE,
but extremely difficult to mine. Why
so
Rare earth elements are magnetic and
shiny and have properties of metals.
RARE?
These properties are useful when mixed in with common
metals like iron.
Your task is to design a license plate that uses element symbols to spell out a
word. Your license plate must include the following-
1. Your word must be spelled correctly
2. Include what state or country your license plate is from
3. You must include the element symbol, element name, and atomic number on each
of your element squares.
4. You must include at least 3 elements and have at least a 4 letter word. Bonus if
you can make a word only using elements!
Make sure to decorate your license plate with drawings and color. No blank license
plates!
