Coating Manual for Equipment Reliability
Coating Manual for Equipment Reliability
COATING SYSTEM 1
1. SCOPE
This Coating Data Sheet covers specific requirements for application of Coating System 1 and
supplements the general requirements of Q-Chem and the coating manufacturer's technical data
sheets and application instructions. The primary coating system shall be used unless approved
otherwise Q-Chem Equipment Reliability Group.
2. AREAS OF USE AND EXPOSURE
This coating system is appropriate for use in General Exposure to the atmosphere for
uninsulated, insulated and non-fireproofed structural steelwork, carbon steel tanks, vessels,
towers, exchangers, heaters, pipework and pipelines located above ground (onshore) with a
design operating temperature of between -460C to 1200C cyclic 150oC.
3. SURFACE CLEANING PRIOR TO SURFACE PREPARATION
The area to be coated must first be cleaned by pressure washing with fresh water at a pressure
not to exceed 5,000 Psi until such time as the chloride salts level does not exceed 50µg/cm 2.
Biodegradable Water Based Degreasers may be used to improve removal of grease and oil.
Washed area must be thoroughly dry prior to applying 1st coat of the coating system after the
surface preparation.

6. NOTES
1) For maintenance purposes, the surface preparation may be reduced to SSPC-SP 11
Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal on surfaces limited to less than 1 square foot area.
Where abrasive blasting is not allowedWater Jetting NACE WJ2 may be allowed.
Abrade with emery paper or lightly grind carborundum tipped fibre discs or wheels on
areas of partial coating damage.
2) All visible chlorides, dirt, oil, and grease shall be removed by methods listed in SSPC-
SP1 prior to surface preparation. Emulsifying degreasers may be used for this purpose,
provided that the final rinse shall be with fresh water having a chloride content of less
than 50ppm. Check with the coating manufacturer to get their recommendation of locally
available water based detergent cleaners that are compatible with their coatings
3) Coatings containing zinc shall not be applied to stainless steel or high alloy materials.
Stainless steel and high allow materials shall be protected from overspray of coatings
intended for ferrous materials.
4) Repair of damaged and non-compliant coatings shall be at done at no cost to Q-Chem.
A surface tolerant primer from the same manufacturer as the midcoat and topcoat may
be substituted for the zinc-rich primer with prior approval of Q-Chem.
5) Contractors shall indicate on their submittals the coating manufacturer and coatings to
be used.
