2 Learn the most common suffixes


A suffix is a group of letters placed at the end of a word in order to
make a new word.

From nouns or adjectives, we can make verbs by adding


these suffixes to them:

-ate, -ise/ize, -en, -fy

origin - to originate legal - to legalize wide - to


widen just - to justify

From verbs or adjectives, we can make


nouns by adding these suffixes to them:

-ance, -ence, -(at)ion, -(i)ty, -ism, -ness,


-ment, -or, -er, -ist

intelligent - intelligence create - creation


social - socialism work - worker

From verbs or nouns, we can make adjectives


by adding these suffixes to them:

-able, -ible, -al, -ic, -ed, -ing, -ive, -ful, -ish,


-less, -ous

drink - drinkable alcohol - alcoholic color -

From adjectives, we can make adverbs by


adding these suffixes to them:

-ly, -ally, -award(s)

3 Learn the most common prefixes.


A prefix is a group of letters placed at the beginning of a word in order to make a new word.

We use them in all kind of words (verbs, nouns, adjectives or adverbs) and some of the most common are:

pro-, pre-, re-, ex-, sub-, in-, im-, ir-, un-, mis-, under-, over-, anti-, super-
