Step-by-Step Qualitative Data Analysis Using NVivo 14

1. Prepare Your Data

 Review the dataset structure and clean it if necessary.

 Rename columns appropriately to ensure clarity (e.g., rename "Unnamed" columns to
meaningful labels).

2. Create a New Project in NVivo

 Open NVivo 14 and create a new project (e.g., "Makando Questionnaire Analysis").
 Import the Excel file into NVivo.

3. Organize and Review Data

 NVivo will detect the columns in your Excel sheet. Assign them as attributes or
codes:
o Demographic columns (e.g., Gender, Age Group) → Set as attributes.
o Text responses (e.g., "What influenced you to undertake this training?") →
Set as qualitative data for coding.

4. Create Nodes

 Nodes represent themes or topics. Create nodes for common themes in the dataset:
o E.g., Motivation, Challenges, Perceptions of Training, Recommendations,
etc.

5. Code the Data

 Read through the responses under each question.

 Highlight relevant text and assign it to appropriate nodes:
o E.g., A response like "I was motivated by a neighbor who studied at this
training" could be coded under Motivation → External Influence.

6. Categorize Attributes

 Assign demographic attributes (e.g., Gender, Age Group) to participants.

 This allows for cross-analysis (e.g., comparing responses by age or gender).

7. Explore Patterns and Relationships

 Use NVivo's analysis tools to identify patterns:

o Word Frequency Queries: Identify commonly used words in responses.
o Text Search Queries: Find occurrences of specific terms or concepts.
o Matrix Coding Queries: Cross-tabulate themes against demographic
attributes.
8. Visualize Data

 Create visualizations like:

o Word clouds for frequent terms.
o Charts to compare node coverage by demographic attributes.
o Models to illustrate relationships between themes.

9. Generate Reports

 Export coding reports or summary findings for specific questions or nodes.

 Use these reports to support your analysis or prepare presentations.

10. Interpret Findings

 Synthesize the coded data into key insights.

 Look for connections between themes and demographic attributes.
