Effect of Salt on Water Boiling Point

The laboratory activity investigates the effect of solute concentration on the boiling point of water using salt as the solute. It involves preparing solutions with varying concentrations of salt, heating them simultaneously, and recording the boiling points. The experiment aims to determine the relationship between solute concentration and boiling point, along with its real-world applications.

VARIABLES IN USING EDIBLE UTENSILS

Laboratory Activity # 1.2

Solutions
Effect of Solute Concentration on Boiling Point
Name : Grade &Section :
Group No. : Instructor :
I. Objective:

To investigate how the concentration of a solute affects the boiling point of a solvent (water).

II. Apparatus/Materials:
2 500mL beakers
Thermometer
2 Alcohol Lamp
2 Tripod
2 Wire Gauze
Salt
Water

III. Procedures V. Observation & Inference

A. Prepare the Solution:

 Fill one beaker with 100 mL of pure

water.
 Fill the other beaker with the same amount
of water and dissolve 5 grams of salt.

B. Set up for Heating:

 Prepare the alcohol

lamp and place it under
the tripod with the wire
gauze above. Like in the
image:

C. Heat the solutions:

 Place both beakers on the heating set-up

and heat them simultaneously. Stir the
solutions gently to ensure even heating.
 Measure boiling points:
 Insert a thermometer into each beaker and
record the temperature when the water
starts to boil vigorously.

Repeat with different concentrations:

 Repeat steps A-C with different
concentrations of salt (10 grams, 15
grams, 20 grams).

Record your data in the table provided:

Based on your observations and analysis, conclude whether the boiling point of water increases or decreases as
the concentration of salt is increased. Explain the underlying scientific principles that contribute to this
phenomenon.
