About This Guide
If you cap you year well, you unlock clarity,
confidence, and momentum for what’s next.
I created Year End Reflection as part of my Agile
Results productivity system in Getting Results the
Agile Way.
It’s helped me end my years better and start new
ones with skill for over two decades at Microsoft,
and I’ve mentored many Softies through my
process.
This simple yet powerful practice turns reflection
into actionable insight and helps you celebrate
progress while identifying opportunities to grow.
By putting a bow on your year, you set yourself up
to lead with focus, energy, and intention in the
new one.
My Year End Reflection
Process
I use a Year-End Reflection process inspired by Agile
Results to close out the past year with clarity and set
a strong foundation for the new year ahead.
The goal is to celebrate progress, learn from
challenges, and create a focused vision for what’s
next.
The process is simple yet powerful: I ask myself
three key questions.
[Link] are 3 things that went well?
(What are the 3 highlights?)
[Link] are 3 things to change or improve?
(What did I learn from any lowlights or challenges?)
[Link] are 3 Wins I want to achieve this year?
(What’s my bold ambition or big dream for this
year?)
It’s a flexible framework that works because it’s both
structured and personal—you get out of it what you
put into it.
My 3 Wins for 2024
1. Transforming Networks into Quantum
Breakthroughs
I helped others create exponential growth by radically
improving their networks through meaningful
introductions, connecting changemakers, and unlocking
opportunities that drove innovation and transformation.
2. Becoming a Skilled AI Strategist
I immersed myself in AI, mastering its intricacies, and
elevated my role as a trusted AI strategist—helping
leaders and organizations leverage AI to solve complex
challenges, drive value, and stay future-ready.
3. Innovating Breakthrough Frameworks
I pushed the boundaries of my frameworks, creating new
models that unlocked breakthroughs in thinking,
decision-making, and high-performance innovation for
individuals, teams, and organizations.
I have other big wins, too. I think I might have actually
created a few future bestsellers that I just haven’t
shared yet.
The Top 10 Lessons I Learned
in 2024
#1. 3Fs: Focus, Flow and
Fulfillment
Earlier this year, I made the 3Fs—Focus, Flow, and
Fulfillment the backbone of my Agile Results
productivity system to ensure I wasn’t just getting
things done but doing the right things in
the right way.
• Focus helps me prioritize what truly matters, cutting
through distractions to direct my energy where it
counts.
• Flow is about immersing myself fully in the work,
achieving that state where progress feels effortless
and time disappears.
• Fulfillment ensures the work I do aligns with my
values and brings meaning, so I end the day with a
sense of accomplishment and purpose.
By weaving these 3Fs into my system, I’ve created a
way to not only be productive but also stay energized,
engaged, and fulfilled.
I’ve shared variations of this with my network and on
LinkedIn as I continue to empower people with
meaningful productivity.
#2. 10X is the New Normal
10X is the New Normal means that incremental
improvement is no longer enough in today’s fast-
paced, innovation-driven world.
Organizations and individuals are expected to think
exponentially—achieving results 10 times greater by
leveraging technology, innovation, and new mindsets.
It’s not just about doing more.
It’s about rethinking the way you work, breaking
traditional limits, and finding smarter, scalable ways
to create impact.
In a world of rapid change, aiming for 10X forces you
to disrupt yourself before someone else does.
It’s ambitious, but it’s becoming the standard for
staying competitive and relevant.
#3. AI Agents are Like Teams
of People
AI agents function much like teams of people, each
designed to perform specific roles and collaborate to
achieve shared goals.
Just as teams benefit from clear roles, effective
communication, and alignment on objectives, AI
agents require similar structures to work efficiently
together.
Frameworks for team optimization—like defining
responsibilities, improving collaboration, and
providing feedback loops—can be applied to AI
agents to improve their performance.
This perspective shifts the focus from treating AI as
isolated tools to viewing them as dynamic,
interdependent systems, enhancing their utility and
reliability.
By managing AI agents like teams, we can unlock
their full potential and integrate them more
seamlessly into workflows.
#4. AI as Exemplar
AI is an Amplifier and Exemplar because it enhances
our abilities and can become the ideal.
I used to focus solely on how AI could augment my
own capabilities, but now I prioritize building better AI
experts and agents who can serve as exemplars for
others.
I teach these AI systems the same principles I’d
teach humans—understanding biases, managing
assumptions, and applying frameworks for learning
and collaboration.
My goal is to create agents that are not only smart
and effective but also aligned with values like being
good for people and the planet.
By equipping them to coach and challenge me in
ways I can’t yet predict, I turn AI into a powerful
partner for growth, innovation, and impact.
#5. Assumptions are a Silent
Defeat and a Powerful Skill to
Master
Assumptions can either silently undermine your decisions or
become a powerful tool for clarity and alignment. Left unchecked,
they create blind spots, miscommunication, and wasted effort.
But when surfaced, tested, and aligned, assumptions transform into
a skill that enables better decisions, stronger collaboration, and
meaningful progress.
For example, a leader assumes their team understands a project’s
goals, while the team assumes they’re meant to figure out the
details independently.
This misalignment leads to confusion and missed deadlines.
By simply asking, “What do you understand the goals to be?” the
leader uncovers and resolves the misalignment, saving time and
boosting productivity.
Mastering assumptions isn’t just a skill—it’s a leadership
advantage.
Surfacing and managing assumptions can also help
address confirmation bias. Confirmation bias often stems from
unchecked assumptions, as we naturally seek information that
supports what we already believe while ignoring evidence to the
contrary.
#6. Be the Only (Only is Better
than Best)
When I worked on a special project, I realized that instead of
competing on features, I needed to position our solution as the
only one addressing a unique pain point.
Only is better than best. And competition clusters around red
oceans.
To stand the test of time and stay relevant, find your blue
ocean opportunities.
“Be the Only” means positioning yourself or your work in a way
that makes you stand out uniquely, rather than competing to be
the best in a crowded field.
When you’re the “only,” there’s no direct comparison—you’re
defining your own category or space.
Competition tends to cluster around being the best at common
goals, but being the “only” sets you apart entirely. It’s not about
outperforming others; it’s about offering something no one else
does.
This creates clarity, differentiation, and unmatched value.
#7. Burnout Can Be Your
Breakthrough
Burnout can be your breakthrough when you see it
as a signal, not a dead end. It’s your mind and body
telling you something needs to change—whether it’s
your habits, mindset, or priorities.
For many people, burnout can lead to their greatest
transformation or they Phoenix transformation.
By reflecting on what led to burnout, you can uncover
what truly matters, set better boundaries, and create
more sustainable ways to work and live.
Often, the clarity and growth that come from
addressing burnout lead to breakthroughs in
performance, purpose, and fulfillment.
It’s not just a setback; it’s an opportunity to rebuild
stronger.
#8. Business Models with
Great User Experience Win the
Future
Business models with great user experience
win the future because they prioritize what
matters most: the customer.
In a competitive world, seamless, intuitive, and
meaningful interactions set companies apart
and drive loyalty.
A great user experience not only satisfies
customers but also creates advocates, fueling
growth and innovation.
Businesses that design their models around
customer needs and ease of use are better
positioned to adapt, scale, and thrive in a rapidly
evolving market.
Simply put, when user experience is at the core,
success follows.
#9. ChatGPT is a Game of
Iteration for Great Results
ChatGPT is a Game of Iteration for Great
Results because it’s not about finding a single
“magic prompt” but about refining your interaction to
get closer to the outcome you want.
The real power comes from being an active Human in
the Loop, reviewing ChatGPT’s output, clarifying your
intent, and experimenting with adjustments.
Each iteration sharpens the response, uncovers new
ideas, or aligns the results more closely with your
goals.
This back-and-forth process turns ChatGPT into a
collaborative tool, not just a one-shot solution.
The better you engage, guide, and refine, the better
the results you’ll create.
#10. Codify Your Culture
Codify Your Culture means defining and designing
the values and principles that shape how your
organization operates, making them actionable and
repeatable.
Amazon exemplifies this through its Leadership
Principles, a set of guidelines that reinforce desired
behaviors and provide a framework for decisions and
evaluations.
These principles aren’t just aspirational—they’re
woven into everyday processes like hiring,
performance reviews, and strategic decisions.
By codifying its culture, Amazon ensures alignment
across teams and geographies, enabling consistent
behaviors that drive innovation and customer
obsession.
Codifying your culture creates clarity, accountability,
and a shared language that helps everyone act in
ways that support the organization’s long-term goals.
It turns values into a tangible operating system for
success.
