1. Introduction
The specific objective of this research is to assess social responsibility practices of
Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd and recommend on their future direction. Cleanaway is
ranked one of the largest waste management companies from Australia with emphasis on
resource recovery based waste management solutions (Cleanaway, n.d.). In this report, we
shall understand the current state of social responsibility for Cleanaway, point out the main
problems faced by them, and make suggestions as to the improvement of integrated CSR
plan.

2. Literature Review
Business social responsibility seeks to combine the ethical, social and environmental aspects
into a business’s operations. Daft et al. (2023) pointed out that the managing of ethic entails
ensuring that organizational action is in consonance with societal values and this always
poses a problem since corporations are faced with ethical dilemmas that may hinder
profitability. For instance, Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd goals are to maximize profit
and at the same time take care of the environment. However, they might compromise their
environmental missions occasionally due to some economic factors, the legitimacy of their
stand on social justice becomes questionable (Daft et al., 2023; Ceesay, 2020).

Appropriate actions to enhance organizational effectiveness are mandated on responsible

leadership and such leadership entails ethical responsibilities. Kim (2022) noted that
participation in extracurricular activities improves the leadership skills of students,
citizenship and commitment. But translating such values to organisations such as Cleanaway
becomes very difficult due to organisational structures and short-term financial goals. This
comparison reveals the challenge of practicing ethical leadership in business settings,
especially while promoting sustainable social goals alongside business imperative (Kim,
2022; ElAlfy et al., 2020).

3. Discussion
Some of the materials published in the media shows that Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd
has been accused of negligence in environmental aspect most especially in waste disposal.
This casts doubt in the sustainability of social responsibility even though the company has
laid down its objectives. Daft et al. (2023) explains that ethical management is vital in re-
establishing organizational standards to fit those global ethical standards. However, it
5

becomes apparent that for the sake of money certain ideals may be compromised indicating
the loss of the bond between profitability and ethics. For instance, the Extend of waste
processing capability targets of Cleanaway might hamper its sustainable activities
(Cleanaway, n.d.; Fatima and Elbanna, 2023).
These problems are important to Cleanaway as negative environmental actions can harm
public attitude towards the company. Schinzel (2020) was of the view that language and
uncertainty avoidance of the cultural orientation influence CSR effectiveness. Likewise,
Cleanaway encounters risks in its efforts to implement CSR in a way that responds to wants
and needs in different areas of the world. This issue reveals the difficulty of the practical
implementation of socially responsible leadership, pointing to the fact that strategic CSR
planning should be aligned with operations (Schinzel, 2020, Langrafe et al., 2020).

4. Recommendations
For Cleanaway, it is crucial to focus on improving the level of transparency regarding their
environmental activities in the future. Assuming far greater accountability for sustainability
than at present, organizational procedures can be more consistent with ethical norms by
adopting the more stringent models (Daft et al., 2023). However, all this will still entail a
strive to do so against prevailing structural economic forces. According to Simunaniemi et al.
(2023), continuity and a wide perspective have to be the driving factors of social
responsibility. Perhaps, if they implanted these values in the decisions that Cleanaway makes
operationally, it would strike a more-enhanced balance between the ethical and the profiteer,
between sustainable values and business profitability (Latapí et al., 2019; Simunaniemi et al.,
2023).

5. Conclusion
This paper revealed there are social responsibility deficiencies in Cleanaway, including
elements like insufficient environmental disclosure and how economic factors negatively
influenced sustainability. These include need to strengthen the sustainability management
system to integrate more robust approach and to encourage leadership to have longer-term
and more systemic view of the company’s stewardship. It is vital to strengthen these practices
to achieve ethical goals, regain the community’s confidence in Cleanaway, and analyse a
solid connection between profitable corporate actions and positive effects on the environment
and society.

6. Self-Reflection
As being a consultant, I have come to the understanding that theory and practicality should
not be mutually exclusive. At first, I admitted to some extent of pressure besides expecting
too much to make a fair assessment of Cleanaway’s social responsibility profile. This
challenge helped me learn the difficult reality of corporate ethical action on a deeper level
than before. Observing the practices also allowed me to see that the company needs to take a
more proactive approach to sustainability, and that in turn made me a better problem solver
and critic.
This was a very engaging assignment as preparing for and presenting in front of a larger
audience is something that is not easy to do but offers valuable insight. Even though,
sometimes I felt nervous, with time I realized that in order for me to convey the message to
the target audience, preparation and rehearsal are very important. This made me realise that
there is still so much room for improvement in public speaking arena, or to be more precise in
holding the audience’s attention during the speech. Though, it also helped me to come up
with some significant findings about my ability to explain or at least introduce rather complex
theories.
The self-reflection carried out in this case has helped me to change my attitude towards the
professional environment. I have realized the importance of ethical factors when making
business decisions and have improved my ability to defend my opinions to other people. The
skills gained during the work will be applied in the future to various projects, with
recommendations for action involving both profit and social and environmental
responsibilities. This has been a very impressive learning experience as it reemphasized the
need to adopt a sustainable approach to leadership and decision making.
