Q1. One frame is shown in Figure 1. Based on the Figure 1, answer the following:
(i) Draw the free body diagram of link ABC [2 marks]
(ii) Calculate the force in member BD [3 marks]
(iii) Draw the free body diagram of link DE [2 marks]
(iv) Calculate the reaction force at point F [3 marks]

Q2. The ramp shown in Figure 2 is used by the passengers for boarding a small airplane. The
total mass of the ramp and six passengers is 750 kg with the center of mass at G.
Determine the force in the hydraulic cylinder AB [5 marks] and the magnitude of the pin
reaction at C [5 marks].

Q3. Figure 3 shows a shaded area. Based on the Figure 3, answer the following:
(i) Locate the centroid 𝑥̅ of the shaded area. [5 marks]
(ii) Locate the centroid 𝑦̅ of the shaded area. [5 marks]

Q4. Figure 4 shows a concrete dam, whose factor of safety for tipping is defined as the ratio of the
stabilizing moment due to the dam’s weight divided by the overturning moment about O due to
the water pressure.
1) Draw the Free Body Diagram of the given figure [1 Mark]
2) Calculate the pressure at the base of the dam and intensities of the load at the base of the
dam [1 Mark]
3) Calculate the dam’s weight and the point of application [3 Marks]
4) Calculate the force due to water pressure and the point of application [2 Marks]

6) Determine the factor of safety [1 Mark]

Q5. The frame for a sign is fabricated from thin, flat steel bar stock of mass per unit length
4.73 kg/m as shown in Fig. 5. The frame is supported by a pin at C and by a cable AB.
The radius R is 0.75 m.
(a) Determine the location of the C.G. of the frame [3 marks]
(b) Determine the tension in the cable. [3 marks]
(c) Determine the reaction at C. [4 marks]

Q6. A beam is subjected to the distributed and concentrated loads as shown in Figure 6.

(b) Determine the resultant of the applied vertical loading and the location of its line of
