Notes and Tips:
Helpful to read these before starting and maybe even again when it's time to put your softie together. I
know it looks like a lot and you want to start crocheting, but it will help if this is your first softie or first
time using one of my patterns. I promise, you will be crocheting soon.
~Do not join pieces that are crocheted in the round unless otherwise indicated
~A stitch marker will come in handy when repeating rounds or another helpful way to keep track of your rounds is to start
all pieces with a long tail, and pull the tail through the beginning stitch of each round.
~Do not over stuff or fiberfill with show through. Add small amounts of stuffing at a time, shaping as you stuff.
~Some pieces will be small, so it’s a good idea to weave in beginning ends as soon it’s possible.

~Assembly & Facial Features: crochet head, muzzle circles, nose, eyelids and ears first. 1: Stuff head (but do not close), the
hdc stitches from round 12 of the head will be the sides of face/cheeks. Sew muzzle circles (with ending yarn) so that they
just touch each other. Use tiny whip stitches, stuffing lightly and shaping as you sew. Sample muzzle circles were placed
with the bottom of the circles, 3 rounds up from the bottom/last round of head (photo 1). 2: Sew nose directly in center of
muzzle again using ending yarn to sew with and stuffing lightly as you sew. Do not cut sewing yarn, you will use this to
stitch mouth (photo 2). 3: Sew tooth in center of muzzle, using tiny whip stitches and ending yarn tail (photo 3). 4:
Mouth; thread tapestry needle with black yarn remaining from nose tail, bring yarn down just at top of tooth, insert yarn,
bring out through opening, tug gently, re-insert yarn and bring back out and last stitch made, take yarn over tooth and
under muzzle circle. Insert needle 4-5 stitches under muzzle, bring out through bottom, tug gently, re-insert needle and
repeat for other side. After mouth stitches are complete, bring needle up in last stitch made, and bring needle back down
through opening to hold yarn in place and secure (photos 4-8). 5: Eyes: cut two tiny circles from felt, just slightly bigger
then eyes, (tracing around a small button will give you a nice circle template). Cut a small slit in center of felt, insert eye
stem in slit. Next decide where you want your eyes (sample eyes were placed with bottom of eye circle 2 rounds up from
top of nose with 4 single crochet stitches between them. Once eyes have been positioned, mark position or hold eyes in
place, remove stuffing and attach eye safety backs. Re-stuff head, do not close (photo 9). 6: Eyelids: Thread tapestry
needle with one yarn tail, place lid just over the top of the eye at a slight angle. Insert needle as close to inside toy of eye as
possible, bring yarn out through opening (photo 10). Thread needle with other yarn tail, move lid across top of eye at a
slight angle. Insert needle, bring out through opening (photo 11). Secure yarn with tight knot. 7: Optional add eyebrows:
Thread tapestry needle with long piece of black yarn, leave a tail in the beginning to use to securing yarn. Bring needle out
2 or 3 rounds above eye, bring yarn over to the outside of eye at a slight angle, insert needle, and bring out through bottom
opening. Secure yarn with tight knot. 8: Optional Eyebrows. If you would like to give your beaver eyelids. Thread tapestry
needle with another long piece of black yarn. Insert yarn in bottom opening, again leaving a little tail to use for securing
yarn. Bring needle out about 2 – 3 rounds above eye, take yarn over and down at a slight angle about 3-4 rounds and 3-5
stitches. Insert needle and bring out through bottom opening. Re-insert needle and repeat process for other eyebrow.
Secure yarn. 9: After pieces are attached, begin needle sculpting, bottom of head should still be open.
~Needle sculpting will help eyes and facial features stand out. Begin by threading tapestry needle with black yarn. Insert needle in
bottom of head opening. Secure yarn (with tight knot like you did when you were stitching the mouth) and bring needle up in a stitch
as close to the inside corner of the right eye just under the eyelid (photo 12), move needle across eye to outside edge at a slight angle,
insert needle about 1 stitch from eyelid (photo 13) and bring back out through bottom opening, tug gently to slightly indent the eye
and hold stitch in place. Bring needle up in beginning inside eye stitch again (photo 14), bring yarn straight down about 2 stitches and
insert needle (photo 15), again bring out through bottom, and tug lightly. Repeat process for the other eye. Secure yarn. Repeat
stitches if needed (to indent eyes more or make lines darker). After all facial features have been stitched and needle sculpting is
completed, add a little more stuffing if needed (don’t forget to shape as you stuff) and close head.
~Ears: Sew ears to sides of head with tiny whip stitches and ending yarn tail. Sample ears were placed, with top of ear 4 rounds down
from top of head (photos 16-18).
~Closing head, arms and legs: Thread tapestry needle with ending yarn tail, weave needle through ending/last round stitches, pull to
gather and close. Secure yarn and cut.
~Sew head to top center of body using tiny whip stitches, going around head and through body. You may need to go around several
times to make sure the head is securely attached.
~Attaching Legs and Arms: To attach legs; position near bottom center of body, making sure bottom of leg is even with bottom of
body and that beaver will be able to sit correctly. Thread tapestry needle, holding leg in place, insert needle about 1 inch down from
the top center of the leg. Push needle all the way through to the other side, leaving a long tail on beginning side. Remove leg, insert
needle back into body, bringing needle out the same stitch you started with. Tie a secure tight knot (will be hidden under leg). Pick up
first leg, insert needle under 3 or 4 stitches on inside of leg (about 1 inch down from top in center). Insert needle back into body (near
beginning stitch) coming out through other side (near first stitch), pick up other leg, insert needle under 3 or 4 stitches on inside of leg
again, insert needle back into body coming out under other leg, tug slightly to secure, repeat sewing under leg stitches and go back and
forth through body 3 or 4 more times, end on same side as you started, tying another small tight knot, hiding under leg. Attach arms
the same way, note: I think it’s helpful to sew on the head first so that you can see where the “shoulders” should be. Still not sure how
this works? There is a little video tutorial on my website at: http://www.tericrewsdesigns.com.
~Hair: Cut several 4 inches long pieces of yarn, separate into individual plies. Thread tapestry needle with one piece of yarn, insert
needle under one single crochet stitch on top of head, pull yarn halfway through, tie a small tight knot in the center, spread piece and
cut to desired length. Repeat for each piece. Trim to desired length.
~Coloring: rub a little dry powder blush onto your finger, using tiny circles add a little coloring to nostrils, inside ears and cheeks.
Apply lightly, you can always add more.
