The District Institute for Education and
Training (DIET) are district-level educational
institutes which have been established in each
district of India by the Indian government.
They help in coordinating and implementing
government policies at district level.
It was upgraded to District Institute of
Education and Training (DIET) in December
1988.

Objective
To make primary education all extensive at the
District level.
To undertake action research to improve the
quality of primary education.
To provide training to primary school Head
Masters, teachers, conductors of adult education
centers, observers and, main volunteers of
Anganwadis and Balwadis.
ROLE OF DIET
DIET at the district level to conduct pre service and
in-service training for elementary and secondary
school teachers.
It would arrange need-based training for teachers of
the district
DIET would also organize and support teachers.
Professional and leadership development programs
for Head Teachers, Senior Teachers, and School
Management Committees on a continued basis.

SCERT(State Council of Educational Research
and Training) organizes in-service teacher
education programmes for teachers of Education.
Special workshops for Heads of Schools are also
undertaken. During the period 1991-2005, SCERT,
along with DIETs, have organized in-service
training/orientation programmes.
SCERT is responsible for material development both
for children and support materials for teachers.

It would undertake action research programs for
teachers, teacher trainees and teacher-educators.
DIET would develop district academic plans and
monitor the quality of schools and teaching.
DIET would address quality issues in elementary
and secondary education of the district.
They are training, resource support, research and
monitoring, evaluation, coordination etc.
FUNCTIONS OF DIET
Training and orientation of elementary and secondary
school teachers (both pre-service and in- service) on
various school subjects.
Orientation of Heads of School Complexes on new
trends in education.
Academic and resource support to the elementary and
secondary education systems of the district.
To undertake Action research to deal with the specific
academic problems of the district in achieving the
objectives of education.

To organize seminars and workshops on various
educational topics to enhance the abilities of teachers
and teacher-educators.
To act as a resource and learning center for teachers
and trainees,
Development of locally relevant materials as teaching
aids, evaluation tools etc.,
To serve as an evaluation center for elementary and
secondary school programmes.
