CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
In recent years, social media has become an integral part of modern society. The
widespread use of social media has greatly impacted the way people
communicate, share information, and interact with each other. However, the
effects of social media on mental health have become a topic of concern,
particularly among teenagers. Unfortunately, the rise of social media has been
associated with various effects on mental health can be helpful or harmful to a
students’ health state. Therefore, it is important to understand the specific ways in
which social media affects the mental health of teenagers.

Background of the Study

With an increase use of social media over the last decade, it is important to
assess any impact social media might have on mental health. There is yet little
action implemented by the mental health professionals regarding the implications
of media for mental health. Additionally, there has been minimal research done
regarding the knowledge and preparedness of mental health clinicians to address
the impact of heavy social media use on the clients’ mental health. Social media’s
impact on mental health complicates social service delivery on the micro level due
to the significant growth of mental health symptoms. As more individuals are
presenting depression, low self-esteem, etc. due to their social media use,
increased service providers are needed. Mental health service providers need to
be aware of social media’s impact on mental health to better serve individuals
addicted to this issue. There is also a need for further training on how to assess
social media use and the potential impacts on mental health. Having an increased
understanding of the impacts of social media use will lead to more efficient and
effective treatment for students. The primary objective of the study is to test the
impact of social media on mental health in Grade 11 ABM in Eclaro Academy.

ECLARO ACADEMY

We all know that social media is popular among students. They are used as
a way to gain knowledge and for entertainment. Using a social media platform may
have advantages and disadvantages. According to Kubbco the use of social media
positively contributes to improve the communication skills of someone, and it
enhances a bond and good relationship. However, for some studies, it harms the
mental health of students. Based on the article of the UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA,
RENO students neglect their interest to do their responsibility and schoolwork
because of addiction and spending more time on networking sites. Among those
negative effects on society there is also advantages and positive effects especially
in youth. Social media helps teenagers or students to increase their self-esteem
and positivity by seeing words of affirmations that might help someone’s emotional
and mental health status preventing incidents. Active users encouraging youth to
use it properly, acknowledging to protect inner peace and potential advantages
with the use of social media, mental health should be protected as well as in
emotional state because high self-esteem are most likely affected of negative
comments, on the other hand, low self-esteem easily get affected as their level of
mental health and emotional state are very low that might lead into negative
effects. Mostly, in their physical appearance and living status, we wish we have
the same thing but not appreciating we have. In consonance, with HelpGUide Org.
comparing yourself with others may lead you to low self-esteem or negative body
image and disorder of eating. A social media platform can express your feelings in
certain circumstances you are experiencing by posting a text and videos. As time
goes by, there are multiple new websites or platforms released each day, and
teens ensure that they have access to it.
Above all, it is important to prioritize our health despite what we are
experiencing in life. To prevent these incidents, limit yourself and have self-
discipline because living a healthy lifestyle is better than living the way you used
to.

Review of Related Literature and Studies
This chapter presents a review of literature and studies both local and
foreign which are relevant to the present study.

Local Literature
We believe that social media gives advantages and disadvantages using it
improperly may risk your mental well-being such as low self-esteem, eating
disorder, low quality of sleep, envy or jealousy, anger issues, and others mental
health related issue. We are blindly seeing unrealistic life because of what we view
in social media as a distraction that may cause unproductivity, loss of
concentration, stress, and unrecognize goals. On the other hand, it could be use
to uplift someone’s confidence and encouragement to have positive attitudes and
thinking with the help of social media platform the uplifting words rapidly spread
because social media is wide sector where we can communicate without
encountering difficulties of delivering messages. It also, allowing individuals
expressing freely feelings to millions of people to vent out all negative thoughts,
participating in online forums might help feels assure that no matter what you think
and feel towards circumtances were all valid forums associates those who needed
emotional and mental supports.
Social media in the Philippines are more than 84 million (2022) that rapidly
increasing grow up to 86.24 million (in 2023). Social Media is a wide sector where
you may access different websites that are inevitable and show unrated videos or
pictures that cause harmful effects to your mental state. Filipinos are the most
active social media users probably to communicate with their loved ones who lives
far away such as OFW and other workers who work in abroad or for educational
matters and they are spending more than 3hrs per day on the famous networking
sites Facebook, Messenger, TikTok, Twitter, and other social networking they use
also, to gather information and gain news about the certain subject.

“I fear the most, that I share a post, that go viral and not to whom suppose. A
factual act or a mere pose for misinformation are like maladies misdiagnosed, the
ultimate penalties to be imposed” This poem wants to direct what social media may
cause into our life, health is a must addiction should stop, privacy should not be
informed by the public and keep it private you are not supposed to post everything
online instead try to have a physical contact and enhance your communication to
others instead of wasting your time scrolling with your phone to witness someone’s
life and by spreading misinformation may face the penalties, be mindful or else you
will regret for the rest of your lives. Dr. Gia Sison, the national adviser of the youth
mental health coalition said that the social media played a “Big Part” of our society
from the previous year the youth they were silent and did not want to speak for
their mental health issues however, recently they are spreading awareness and
reinforces for mental health illness and because of social media we are more vocal
for the discussion regarding the mental health issues. They are acknowledging the
fact of “World Health Organization (WHO) that health represents physical, mental,
and spiritual of a person. The primary of the law states of responsibilities and
provide the establishments of National Mental Health Council to spread an
awareness about the effects of excessive usage of social media to a person's
mental well-being.

In all, we should limit ourselves and make a time schedule for using mobile
phones, try to unplug and explore new things. It must be a help for you to keep
away from social media. Mental Health shall prioritize because we 'responsible to
take care of our body the doctors and professionals are warning us and
recommend us to be productive and active in physical and mental activities in order
that we may prevent such harm that would be damaging to our health.

xi
ECLARO ACADEMY
Foreign Literature
With the use of social media, we cannot fully determine the effects of
usage to the users especially to the youth if it’s negative or positive impacts to
them. The role of social media platform is to make it entertaining, communicative
and uncomplicated to use generated by experts of technology that makes this
generation advance and easy access in any platform. According to the study of
research scientist named “Mesfin Awoke Bekalu” using it appropriately may
cause positivity to the overall well-being of an individuals, the study of impacts of
how social media affects mental health brought findings as they usually heard the
negative impacts not deepening investigate to identify its advantages and
disadvantages. This routine of using social media impacts your overall well-being
– for example: emotional connection, same experiences, validation of thoughts
and feelings could find comfort among platforms because they can reach out
those users sharing same circumstances.
Social media has become an integral part of students' daily lives, and it has
transformed the way they interact with each other and the world around them. This
literature review explores the effects of social media on students' mental health.
According to a study conducted by Kross et al. (2019), Facebook use has been
linked to a decrease in subjective well-being and life satisfaction among young
adults. The study found that the more time individuals spent on Facebook, the
more their life satisfaction decreased. This is because social media platforms like
Facebook can create a sense of social comparison, which can lead to feelings of
envy, jealousy, and low self-esteem.
In conclusion, social media has been linked to several negative
consequences for students' mental health. Students should be aware of the
potential negative effects of social media use and use it in moderation. Additionally,
parents, educators, and mental health professionals must provide support and
resources to help students manage their social media use and maintain healthy
for their mental health.

xii
ECLARO ACADEMY

Local Studies
The students spend a lot of time on social media platforms viewing and
updating statuses, posting memorable pictures, or virtual interaction of friends. In
some studies, it focuses on the negative effects of social media however, there is
some positive impacts and advantages usage of social media in our daily life
routines. It explored how social media helps individual to connect other people
sharing common interest giving tips or advises to overcome those negative
thoughts and become in a good state of condition. With the help of platforms, it
maintains a good relationship by constantly communicating in less time
consuming, strengthening to identify your self- identity, worth, and value by those
people who might help you by surrounding with positive attitudes.

Mental health disorders are common and may significantly affect quality of
life. However, mental health disorders such as depression, and distress are often
under-recognized even though appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation
may be beneficial in optimizing function and quality of life. Specifically, very little is
known about the prevalence and correlates of depression, and distress among
Filipinos across the globe (WHO, 2021); and to our knowledge, this has never been
examined among Filipinos living in the Philippines (Mental Health Atlas 2011 -
Philippines, 2020). Furthermore, most mental health studies were conducted in the
U.S. and tended to lump Asian Americans together
as a homogeneous ethnic category. This popular belief has served to justify the
lack of attention to their unique psychological needs. Consequently, the number of
investigations conducted with Asian Americans focusing on the prevalence of
mental disorders is extremely limited, compared with other ethnic minority groups.
The impacts and effects determine how students will responsibly use of social
media that protects them against disorders and disadvancement.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
This chapter concentrate on the discussion of research methodology
including research design, participants of the study, data gathering instrument,
data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of data that will be used by the
researchers to complete the study.

Research Design
The researchers used a Comparative Research Design (Causal) method to get a
systematic and objective understanding of the problem at issue. The descriptive
survey will include a set of questions related to the study as well as personal
information and feedback. The questions will be on a Likert scale. The students
completed the items for the researchers to examine and determine the validity and
reliability of their responses.

Participants of the study

The participants of this research are the students of Eclaro Academy limited to
Grade-11 students under the ABM strand of Senior High School. Since they have
connection to this study. Both are involved in our research entitled “The Effects of
Social Use Media on the Mental Health of Grade-11 ABM Students in Eclaro
Academy”. There was a total of one hundred (100) respondents. The researchers
assessed only the available students at the time of releasing the questionnaires
because there was an enough population of student-respondents with acceptable
criteria. As a result, the survey only included and considered 100 respondents in
total.

xv
ECLARO ACADEMY
Data Gathering Instrument
The researchers contextualized the research by adoping descriptive survey. On
the other side, the main instrument in the data-gathering do the survey through
Face to Face meeting. These enumerated research instruments are the most
frequently used data gathering methods. The researchers develop and/or design
instruments for the collection of statistical data. As a result, the researchers used
the following research instruments to collect information:

1. Survey Questionnaire
To ensure accurate data gathering, a validated questionnaire will be used
by the researchers to extract the effect of social media on the Mental Health
of Grade-11 ABM students.

1. profile - gather information on some respondent's characteristics

2. sub-scales - to gather information to the degree to which respondents
experience the effects of social media on their mental-well being.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers immediately got permission from our research teacher Ms. Angel
Grace Aguilar to allow to conduct the study. Once the request letter was
approved, the researchers distributed the survey questionnaires to the
respondents via Face to Face procedure. The respondents were given a day to
complete the survey. The respondents provided all of the required information. The
data gathered was counted, tabulated, computed, evaluated, and interpreted after
the surveys were completed.

xvi
ECLARO ACADEMY
Statistical Treatment of Data
To ensure accurate data analysis and interpretation the data gathering procedures
must use the following statistical tools were used:
The researchers use the weighted mean, percentage and frequency.
1. Frequency and Percentage. The percentage will be able to determine the
frequency counts and percentage distribution of personal related variables
of the respondents.
𝑓
Thus: 𝑃𝑁 𝑥 100%

Where: P = percentage
f= frequency count
n = total number of respondents
100 = constant value

2. Weighted Mean. It will be used to translate a total number of respondents

to every question. The general formula for weighted mean
Σ𝑓
𝑊𝑀 =𝑁

Where: WM = weighted mean of the sample

f = frequency count
n = total number of respondents
Σ = = sum of all frequency count
The weighted mean will be calculated to determine the (dependent variable) of the
respondents.
In intercreing the weighted mean (dependents variable), the Likert scale will be
used.
3. Likert scale. To be used in the study questionnaire. A method of ascribing
quantitative value to qualitative data, to make it amenable to statistical

analysis. A numeric value is assigned to each potential choice and a mean
ligure for all the responses is computed at the end of the evaluation survey.

The simple frequency distribution table was used totally and then tabulate the
frequency of response for each level of agreement and classify the weighted mean
as follows.
