General Instructions
Question paper comprises six Sections – A, B, C, D, E and F. There are 17
questions in the question paper. All questions are compulsory.
Section A –Question no. 1 to 6 are MCQs of 1 mark each.
Section B – Question no. 7 to 9 are Very Short Answer Type Questions, carrying 2
marks each. Answer to each question should not exceed 40 words.
Section C – Question no. 10 to 12 are Short Answer Type Questions, carrying 3
marks each. Answer to each question should not exceed 60 words.
Section D – Question no.13 is a long answer type question, carrying 5 marks.
Answer to this question should not exceed 120 words.
Section E – Question no.14 to 16 are case based questions with three sub questions
and are of 3 marks each.
Section F – Question no. 17 is map based, carrying 5 marks with two parts, 17a
from History (2 marks) and 17b from Geography (3 marks).
There is no overall choice in the question paper. However, an internal choice has
been provided in few questions. Only one of the choices in such questions have to
be attempted.
In addition to this, separate instructions are given with each section and question,
wherever necessary.

Ans. (i) Several inscriptions on surfaces such as stone slabs and statues have been found in
Mathura.
(ii) These inscriptions are dated back to around 2000 years ago.
(iii) These inscriptions recorded gifts made by kings and queens, officers, merchants,
and crafts persons who lived in the city. For instance, inscriptions from Mathura
mention goldsmiths, blacksmiths, weavers, basket makers, garland makers, perfumers.
11. How does a Municipal Corporation raise money for carrying out its functions? 3

Ans. (i) People who own homes have to pay a property tax.
(ii) They also have to pay taxes for water and other services.
(iii) There are also taxes for education and other amenities. If you own a hotel or
Shop, you have to pay a tax for this as well. Also an entertainment tax is collected from
the cinema theatre owners, etc.

(i) A Municipal Corporation has different committees consisting of ward councillors.
(ii)These committees discuss and debate issues concerning the city and take complicated
decisions that affect the entire city.
(iii) There are committees for water supply, garbage collection, street lighting etc. that
decide on the work to be done.
12. What would happen in the absence of atmosphere on the Earth? 3

Ans. (i) The atmosphere provides us with air we breathe.
(ii) It protects us from the harmful ultra-violet rays of the Sun.
(iii) It absorbs the heat radiated by the Earth and keeps the Earth warm. Therefore,
atmosphere is an important domain of the Earth and in the absence of it the life on the
Earth would not exist.

13. Explain the formation of rural society around 2500 years ago in the northern parts of 5

Ans. (i) There were at least three different kinds of people living in most villages.
(ii) The village headman was known as the grama bhojaka. He was often the largest
landowner. The king often used him to collect taxes from the village. He also functioned
as a judge, and sometimes as a policeman.
(iii) Apart from the grama bhojaka, there were other independent farmers, known as
grihapatis, most of whom were smaller landowners.
(iv) There were men and women such as the dasa karmakara, who did not own land and

had to earn a living working on the fields owned by others.
(v) In most villages there were also some crafts persons such as the blacksmith, potter,
carpenter and weaver.
OR
(i) The Ward Councillors are elected representatives of people. They are elected by the
eligible voters of their wards.
(ii) The Ward Councillors help the people to resolve the issues pertaining to their wards.
For example, if there are dangerous electrical wires hanging down, the local Ward
Councillor can help people get in touch with the electricity authority.
(iii) The Ward Councillors work through various committees to carry out different
functions of the Municipal Corporation such as water supply, garbage collections and so
on.
(iv) All the Ward Councillors meet and they make a budget and the money of the
Municipal Corporation is spent according to this.
(v) The Ward Councillors try and ensure that the particular demands of their wards are
placed before the entire council.

(i) The biosphere is the narrow zone of contact between the land, water and air.
(ii) It is in this zone that life, that is unique to this planet, exists.
(iii) The organisms in the biosphere may broadly be divided into the plant kingdom and
the animal kingdom.
(iv) In biosphere, there are several species of organisms that vary in size from microbes
and bacteria to huge mammals.
(v) All the living organisms including humans are linked to each other and to the
biosphere for survival.

The reason often given by the Municipal Corporation is that the land in which the poor
have set up their homes does not belong to them and that slum-dwellers do not pay
taxes. However, people living in middle class neighbourhoods pay very little in taxes
compared to the amount of money the corporation spends on them in setting up parks,
street lighting facilities, regular garbage collection etc.
