INTRODUCTION
Throughout history, humans have always strived to innovate and create technologies to
enhance their lives. However, their insatiable needs have led to the development of
numerous technologies. In the initial stages, these technologies were developed to fulfill
human needs without considering their pros and cons for example, Internal Combustion
Engine (ICE) vehicles are a significant cause of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
The combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel releases carbon dioxide (CO2),
nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter into the atmosphere, which contributes to
global warming and air quality issues. To counter these mistakes caused previously, humans
are searching for alternatives for the same technology with more advanced features along
with less environmental impact and ensure a sustainable future. Currently, technologies and
innovation are developed with careful consideration of all factors for example, Electric
Vehicles (EVs) are designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease air pollution, and
decrease dependence on oil.

Since we are talking about a sustainable future. There is a current trend in developing
countries towards the creation of planned cities. Planned cities, which are also referred to as
"planned communities" or "new towns", are urban areas that are meticulously designed and
organized according to a preconceived plan or blueprint. These cities are intentionally
created with a specific vision and often involve the systematic layout of infrastructure, land
use, and public spaces. Characteristics of a planned city are strategic design, zoning and land
use, infrastructure, green spaces and public amenities, sustainability, urban services,
Technology Integration, and Environmental Considerations. These planned cities mainly
focus on developing an automated system, and environment-friendly technologies.
Considering these factors two major inventions are done by Humans which are:

AI IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

 AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that focuses on creating
systems and machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human
intelligence. AI systems are designed to mimic human cognitive functions, such as
problem-solving, learning, reasoning, and decision-making, but they do so using
algorithms, data, and computational power. The primary goal of AI is to enable machines
to exhibit intelligent behavior and perform tasks that would normally require human
intelligence.
The introduction of AI has revolutionized various industries, such as transportation,
farming, customer service, software development, healthcare, and manufacturing, by
automating machines and processes.

SOME FEATURES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

 EVs
Electric Vehicles (EVs), are a type of automobile that operates using one or more electric
motors powered by electricity stored in batteries or other energy storage devices. Unlike
conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles that rely on gasoline or diesel to
generate power, EVs use electricity as their primary source of energy for propulsion.
Electric vehicles offer several advantages, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions,
lower operating costs, quieter operation, and potential energy independence... EVs are
more energy-efficient than ICE vehicles, converting more electrical energy into vehicle
propulsion. Electricity is typically cheaper than gasoline, and the cost of "fueling" an EV
is lower. EVs have fewer moving parts, which means fewer components to wear out or
break, resulting in reduced maintenance and repair expenses.

 Types of EVs
1. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): Battery electric vehicles, often referred to
as pure electric vehicles, are entirely powered by electricity stored in high-
capacity batteries.
2. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs): Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and a larger
battery.

2
AI IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

3. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs): Hybrid electric vehicles use both an

internal combustion engine and an electric motor to improve fuel efficiency.
4. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs): Fuel cell electric vehicles use
hydrogen as a fuel source to generate electricity through a chemical process in
a fuel cell.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ELECTRICAL VEHICLES (EVs)

 AI-EVs
Integration of Artificial Intelligence technology into Electrical Vehicles led to the
innovation of Smart Electrical Vehicles (SEVs). AI plays a crucial role in various aspects
of EVs, making them smarter and more capable than traditional electric vehicles.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a driving force in transforming the automotive
industry, particularly in the realm of autonomous electric cars. AI has found its way into
various aspects of electric vehicle technology, enabling advancements and innovations
that were previously unimaginable. The synergy between AI and EVs is driving the
development of intelligent systems that optimize energy usage, enhance safety, and
provide a seamless user experience. One of the primary roles of AI in electric vehicle
technology is optimizing energy efficiency. AI algorithms analyze vast amounts of data
from sensors, batteries, and other vehicle components to make real-time adjustments and
improve energy consumption. These algorithms can optimize the powertrain, manage
regenerative braking, and predict energy requirements based on driving patterns, weather
conditions, and traffic data. As AI continues to advance, the future of electric mobility
looks promising, with cleaner, safer, and more intelligent transportation systems. There
are various features of AI-EVs which will be explained further:

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

LITERATURE SURVEY
Rathod (2013) defined an autonomous vehicle as a passenger vehicle that drives by itself
without any human intervention. This vehicle is known as an autopilot, driverless car, auto-
drive car, or autonomous vehicle. Rouf, Ali, and Hussain (2018) explained AI, which is a
discipline of the computer system responsible for analyzing various visual inputs, such as
facial, object, and gesture recognition. Hence AI is used in all autonomous vehicles. Sun,
Bebis, and Miller (2004) defined activities such as detecting the distance of an object by
measuring the travel time of a signal emitted by the sensors and reflected by the object, it
includes lasers and LIDAR. Research depicts that these sensors have a low spatial resolution,
slow scanning speed, and interference among sensors in heavy traffic. Sun et al., suggested
that sensors need to be improved by using the neural network and fuzzy logic technology to
enhance the performance of sensors. Goerick, Noll, and Werner (1996) described the feature
of car detection and tracking, The CARTRACK system, is a specialized monocular visual
sensor system for detecting, tracking, and measuring rear or front views of automobiles in
image sequences taken from the viewpoint of a car. The system consists of pre-processing,
classification, or detection modules. Here, this classification and detection task is performed
by means of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The main functions of ANNs are
detection, identification, classification, localization, and prediction of object movement. The
speed of the Artificial Neural Network is gained by the pre-processing method as well as the
integral treatment of image regions. Goerick et al. (1996) explained the different pre-
processing methods, where grey-scale images are pre-processed by a method called Local
Orientation Coding (LOC). The image features obtained are bit strings, each representing a
binary code for the directional grey-level variation in the pixel's neighborhood. Grey level
variations are the illumination conditions that vary, object tilting, occlusions, differently
resolved structures depending on the distance of the object which will be under
consideration, noise and perturbations induced by the recording and processing equipment,
different viewpoints and also the type of cars, that is cars that differ in shape, size, and color.
Naranjo, González, Reviejo, García, and De Pedro (2003) stated that fuzzy control deals with
the input and output variables, here the knowledge of any mathematical model of the
processes involved is not at all required. The relationship between input and output variables
is expressed in sentences that represent or mimic human thinking and approximation, the
variables, specifically the output variables, are normalized and their values can be applied to
low-level controllers easily. These low-level controllers act directly upon the physical
actuators.

BASIC PRINCIPLES & CONCEPTS

 SENSORS IN AI-EVs
As most people know, Artificial Intelligence or AI is a critical part of making autonomous
vehicles a reality. An autonomous vehicle is typically covered in sensors and cameras that
feed data into a neural network (a type of AI) that then sends signals to the different
mechanical components of the car - in technical terms, this process is known as perception.
These signals tell the car to take actions, such as turning, accelerating, and braking.

Some examples of the type of sensors on autonomous vehicles include:

 Light detection and ranging (LIDAR)

 Radio detection and ranging (RADAR)
 Cameras
 Infrared sensors
 Ultrasonic sensor

Different autonomous vehicle companies have taken different approaches to using these
sensors. Some, such as Tesla, have decided to focus on optical cameras as their primary data
feed. They do this to simplify the number of different inputs their systems have to handle.
They are therefore able to focus their AI teams on building computer vision and machine
learning algorithms to analyze and make decisions based on the pixels in the images from the
cameras. This means their cars are reacting to what they see as they’re driving, just like a
human.

Other companies, like GM’s Cruise, will map out different cities and run massive
simulations. In a way, they create a virtual city like a computer game. Then, based on GPS
tracking, the vehicles know roughly what is around them already. This allows them to train
their AI models with both real-world and simulation data. The cars then use LIDAR,
RADAR, and cameras to perceive the world around them and make decisions while driving.

 DIFFERENT LEVELS OF AUTONOMY IN AI-EVs

AI-powered electric vehicles (AI-EVs) can be equipped with different levels of autonomy,
often referred to as levels of driving automation. These levels are defined by the Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) in the J3016 standard and range from Level 0 (no automation)
to Level 5 (full automation). The industry categorizes the abilities of a self-driving car into 6
different levels. Those levels are summarized here:

 Level 0 = No automated features.

At this level, there is no automation, and the driver is fully responsible for controlling
the vehicle. AI is not actively involved in driving tasks, except for perhaps providing

6
AI IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

basic warnings and driver assistance features like blind-spot monitoring or lane
departure warnings.

 Level 1 = Cruise control.

AI provides limited assistance, usually in the form of features like adaptive cruise
control and lane-keeping assistance. The driver is still responsible for most aspects of
driving, but AI can help with specific tasks.

 Level 2 = Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping.

Level 2 represents systems that can simultaneously control both steering and
acceleration/deceleration. While the AI can handle these tasks, the driver must remain
engaged and ready to take over when necessary. Tesla's Autopilot is an example of
Level 2 automation

 Level 3 = Conditional Automation

At this level, the AI can manage the driving tasks under specific conditions. The driver
can disengage from driving but must be ready to take over when the AI requests it.
The vehicle can handle certain scenarios, but the driver is expected to intervene if the
system encounters a situation it cannot handle. Level 3 automation is still relatively
limited and not widely available.

 Level 4 = (High Automation

Level 4 vehicles are capable of fully autonomous driving within specific operational
design domains (ODDs). These are predefined conditions, such as city environments
or highways, where the AI can handle all driving tasks without driver intervention.
However, Level 4 vehicles may not operate in every situation or location.

 Level 5 = Full Automation

Level 5 represents full automation, where the AI system can handle all driving tasks
under all conditions, including complex urban environments, rural roads, and extreme
weather. Level 5 vehicles do not require a human driver at any point and are fully self-
driving.

APPLICATION OF AI IN AI-EVs

CHALLENGES AND LIMITATIONS

Although the AI-EV technology is safer and environmentally friendly with high efficiency in
utilizing the power it has some challenges and limitations. Barriers to EVs in the Indian
market can be addressed from various prospective such as Technical barriers, policy barriers,
and lack of infrastructure. There are a few barriers explained below

 Market

1. Vehicle Servicing
To take proper care of the electric car, a trained technician should be available to
repair, maintain, and troubleshoot the electric vehicle. They must be able to apply their
skills to rectify the problem as quickly as possible.
2. High capital cost
The battery packs of electric vehicles are expensive and also need replacement more
than once in their lifetime. Gas-powered cars are cheap when compared with electric
vehicles.

12
AI IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

 Technical

1. Battery lifespan/efficiency
Electric cars are usually created by using electric motors, batteries, chargers, and
controllers to replace the fuel tank and gasoline engine of a conventional vehicle. As
the EVs batteries are designed for a long life, it wears out in due course of time.
Currently, most manufacturers are offering eight years/100,000-mile warranty for their
batteries.
2. Driving range of electric vehicle
A driving range is recognized as the main barrier of an Electric vehicle typically
because EVs have a smaller range as compared with the equivalent ICE vehicle. The
distance an electric vehicle can travel on a full charge or full tank is considered a
significant drawback to the uptake of the EV in the global market. Most of the BEVs
provide a driving range of less than 250 km per recharge. However, some of the latest
models can offer up to 400 km. By now, PHEV is offering a range of 500 km or more
due to the availability of liquid fuel internal combustion engines. The driver must plan
their trip carefully and may not have the option for a long-distance trip. This makes
the magnitude of the driving range a barrier.

 Policy

To speed up the Indian electric vehicle revolution, the Government of India is planning to
subsidize EVs charging infrastructure in the country. The Ministry of Power has also
recently clarified that the EV charging station requires no license to operate in India, which
can boost nationwide EV charging station infrastructure. The Govt. should not only slash the
applicable rate for Goods and Service Tax (GST) on Li-ion batteries, provide incentives and
concessions to EV buyers, but also provide incentives for shifting the public transport sector
to Electric vehicles.

 Infrastructure

13
AI IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

1. Charging infrastructure
More charging infrastructure is required for a larger number of electric vehicles and
hence, higher demands for electrical energy. Due to the lack of existing charging
infrastructure in India, the sale of the electric vehicle is low.
The chargeable batteries ought to be appreciated by EV manufacturers from a design
point of view so that discharge batteries might be replaced by completely energized
batteries. During the off-peak time, at a reduced electricity tariff, the charging station
can plan to charge their batteries.
2. Battery recycling
The batteries used in Electric vehicles are generally planned to last for a limited
lifetime of the vehicle but will wear out eventually. The pricing for battery
replacement is not properly informed by the manufacturers, but if there is a need for
battery replacement outside its warranty period, then it adds to the expenses by
dumping the old battery with a new one. The chemical elements of the batteries like
Lithium, Nickel, Cobalt, Manganese, and Titanium not only increase the cost-
effectiveness of the supply chain but also have an environmental concern during the
scraping of the battery elements.

IMPACT ON SOCIETY

drivers and passengers, raising concerns about data privacy and potential misuse of
this information. Safeguarding data and privacy will be crucial.
3. Cybersecurity Risks: The integration of AI and connectivity in smart EVs makes
them susceptible to cyberattacks, which could compromise vehicle safety and personal
information. Protecting against such threats will be a priority.
4. Technology Divide: Not everyone may have equal access to AI-equipped EVs,
potentially exacerbating existing societal divides. Ensuring that AI benefits are
distributed equitably will be a societal challenge.
