UNIT-I
11. A refrigerant at –300C flows inside a copper tube (K= 400W/m 2C) of inside 1cm and wall
thickness 2mm. To reduce losses, a 3mm thick shell of thermocouple (K=0.03W/m 2C) is
lagged on to the pipe. Calculate the heat leakage to the refrigerant per meter length of the
pipe. The internal and external film coefficients are 450 and 5 W/m 2C respectively and
outside air temperature is 300C.
(OR)
12. A long carbon steel rod of length 40 cm and diameter 10 mm (K= 40W/m oC) is placed in
such that one of its end is kept at 400oC. The ambient temperature is 30oC. and the film heat
transfer coefficient is 10 W/m 2C). Determine the temperature at the mid length of fin and
heat transfer rate from the fin.

UNIT-II
13. A 8 cm diameter potato, initially at a uniform temperature of 25 oC, is suddenly dropped into
a boiling water at 100oC. The heat transfer coefficient between the water and the surface of
potato is 5000 W/m2C. Assume the thermal property of potato is to be α=1.5x10 -7W/m2C,
k=7W/m C. Determine the time required for the center temperature of the potato to reach
80oC.
(OR)
14. Calculate the steady-state temperature for nodes 1-6 in the figure.
UNIT-III
15. A thin 80 cm long and 8 cm wide horizontal plate is maintained at a temperature of 130 oC in
a tank full of water at 70oC. Estimate the rate of heat input into the plate necessary to
maintain the temperature of 130oC.
(OR)
16. Consider the flow of water with a velocity of 0.0379m/s through a tube 2cm in diameter. The
flow is hydro dynamically and thermally developed. Calculate the heat transfer coefficient by
taking the water properties at 60oC when
1. The pipe wall is maintained at constant temperature.
2. The constant wall heat flux is maintained.
UNIT-IV
17. Two large parallel plates of emissivities 0.9 and 0.6 respectively at temperatures of 427 oC
and 27oC are shielded by an aluminium sheet of emissivities 0.4. Determine the shield
temperature and the heat transfer.
2
(OR)
18. Two concentric sphere 21cm and 30cm in diameter with space between them evacuated are
to be used to store liquid at -153oC in a room of 27oC. The surfaces of sphere are flushed with
aluminium (ε=0.03) and latent heat of vaporization of liquid is 200KJ/Kg. Calculate the rate
of evaporation of liquid air.
UNIT-V
19. Estimate the diffusion rate of water from the bottom of a tube 10 mm in diameter and 15 cm
long into dry air at 25oC. Take the diffusion coefficient of water through air as 0.255 x10 -4
m2/s.
(OR)
20. Determine the surface area required for a one shell pass and four tube passes heat exchanger
which is required to cool 3200kg/hr of Benzene(Cp=1.74kj/kgK) from 72oC to 42oC. The
cooling water(Cp=4.18kj/kgK) at an inlet temperature of 15 oC flows at the rate of 2200 kg/hr.
Assume over all heat transfer coefficient as 280 w/m2K.
