Activity 2_Panel Discussion

a. In your own words, what is peace and culture of peace?

Peace is a fundamental aspect of human existence that requires understanding and respect. It
begins within us and transcends differences in beliefs, culture, and thought processes. A culture
of peace is a state of tranquility that transcends physical war and internal conflicts, both
interpersonal and societal. It is a personal state of mind and a collective goal for societies and
nations, characterized by non-violent means. Achieving and maintaining peace promotes
understanding, tolerance, and justice among individuals and communities.

Peace is perceived as calmness within ourselves and the absence of war and conflict in our
environment. It is also about fair and just treatment from one another. Peace is one of the
fundamentals for greater development in a society, achieved through the understanding and
responsibilities of each citizen.

A culture of peace is a word that defines how diverse cultures interact and work happily with one
another, despite differences in race, language, customs, and beliefs. It finds common ground
with each culture to form one identity while appreciating the individuality and beauty of each
culture. We may express respect for fundamental rights and individual liberty by cultivating a
culture of peace.

b. Why is MSU implementing programs on peace education?

Mindanao State University (MSU) is a peace university that focuses on peace education and
social integration, welcoming students from all backgrounds and cultures. Its mandate for
cultural community includes the creation of FPE101, a mandatory three-unit course, in response
to the Marawi siege in 2017. This course was created as part of a peace initiative and social
integration laboratory to address violent extremism in 2017. MSU aims to provide solutions to
various problems and prevent youth from harmful ideologies and beliefs. Peace education at
MSU provides technical knowledge, conflict resolution, and promotes various aspects of
development. Also, by acting as a social laboratory and being founded on the ideals of religion,
equality for everyone, pacifism, social justice, and unity across faiths and cultures, and oneness
with nature, MSU aspires to develop the bonds between each culture that is represented at the
university.

c. In what ways do you think can we promote culture of peace in everyday life?

Culture of peace is a fundamental aspect of human life that can be promoted through various
means. It involves respecting one another's way of thinking, living, traditions, and beliefs,
speaking up against discrimination, and sharing the true meaning of peace. As responsible
individuals, we must aim to uphold and promote this culture in our daily lives.

To promote culture of peace, we can change our ways, redirect our steps, and recalibrate our
minds. We can adopt practices and attitudes that contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious
society, such as peace education, social justice, equitable distribution of opportunities and
resources, non-violent solutions, human rights, respectful communication, and peace education.
We must also avoid stereotypes, discrimination, violent extremism, bullying, and racism. Despite

facing challenges and problems, we should tolerate them with peace and positivity. By doing so,
we can create a more harmonious and peaceful society.
