Candidacy for Doctoral Fellow

March, 2022

Dear concern,
I am writing this to express my interest in the Ph.D. position at Chalmers University of Technology,
about which I have come to know about while looking for Ph.D. positions in Material Science. I
decided to pursue doctoral studies in the subject further because I am keen to ponder into the subject
matter and explore as much as I can. My earnest passion for the subject matter is the sole reason for
having higher studies on it.
After my intermediate coursework, I started graduation in the subject (2014) to fulfill my dream of
holding a better grasp on the subject. During the time I learned several disciplines like modern
physics, thermodynamics which indeed accelerated my thirst for pondering the subject astoundingly,
And eventually, this caused me to have a Master’s on it.
However, in 2017 I cracked the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) with a good
score and started M.Sc. from Central University of Haryana. During my Master's coursework, I have
been getting interested in materials, particularly, how their properties change at with temperatures
and other factors like pressure, size etc. And in this prospect, I got a golden opportunity to interact
with great Professors of nuclear physics, Nanoscience and condensed matter physics, which draws
my attention towards them. Also, I have participated in Science exhibitions and other academic
programs.
I pursued my master's project work at S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata. The
project was based on "Synthesis of palladium nanoparticles by pulsed laser ablation in liquid
(PLAL) and their characterization". In this project work, I had done optimization of experimental
parameters for the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles by pulsed laser ablation in liquid media and
their optical and morphological characterization. During my project work, I got to know more about
various experimental tools like UV visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and Transmission electron
microscopy (TEM).
After my master's degree in physics, I also qualified Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)
(Year: 2020 and 2021), a National Level Examination in India with Physics as my major subject.
Presently I am working as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF, PHYSICS) on Thermoelectric Materials
at Defence Lab, Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Government of India.
During working here I got experience in handling various machines like Spark Plasma sintering
(SPS), High vacuum system, and thermoelectric characterization techniques (laser flash apparatus,
Seeback measurement apparatus). I also worked on chemical synthesis process; Solvo-Thermal and
physical synthesis process like Reactive spark plasma synthesis, Melt-Quench.
After building a strong interest in experimental material science research work I am looking forward
to start my doctoral studies in the area related with it. As the proposed research work on d 2D
Topological Quantum Material Devices is related with the material Science, also a very interesting
topic to work on as this offers ample opportunity to enhance my skills and knowledge of topological
materials which is crucial for achieving my long term academic goals. With a good research work
experience I also have good subjective knowledge of quantum physics and Material Science. So I am
able to connect with the proposal of this research work. Therefore, I am positively looking forward to
start my doctoral studies at Chalmers University of Technology.
Despite academia, I have a huge interest in sports. Previously I have participated in regional,
national, district level tournaments in athletics and also represented my state at the zonal and senior
national championships in softball. I got several awards in sports, especially during my graduation I
was awarded Dr. Sister M. Liceria A.C. (Principals’ honor of Patna women’s college) award for
outstanding achievement as outdoor sports champion for the year 2016.
As I consider failure as a success hence, without being frightened I would like to volunteer in the
broader platform research work, wholeheartedly. Also, I am highly enthusiastic to treat a subject
from plethoric perceptions and try to come up with new ideas in order to solve the difficulties, I
believe the Ph.D. course work and a good research team will surely give me that platform, where I
can prove my potentiality.
Therefore with all my experiences and self-confidence, I present myself as a good candidate for a
doctoral position in your institute Chalmers University of Technology.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Tamanna Kumari
