Division/Workshop Allotment
KAVACH is meant to provide protection by preventing trains to
pass the Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) (i.e., Red – Stop

Provision of KAVACH will be an additional Safety aid to the Loco
Chennai Pilots to prevent consequences arising out of Signal Passing At
Trichchirappalli Danger (SPAD), to control train speed within specified limits, to
Madurai display Signal Aspect in Engine cab and to further reduce the
Palghat probability of train collisions in block sections and on running
Thiruvananthapuram lines at stations through certain non-signalling based protections.
Salem KAVACH, will be a powerful aid in assisting Railways in realising

ARCHITECTURE OF KAVACH
Kavach broadly comprises of “Stationary Control Unit” and “On-
Board Equipment”. Stationary Control Unit is the network of
“Station control unit”, “radio unit”, and an “array of passive radio
frequency identifier (RFID) tags” positioned at all the crucial
locations of the station and block sections. “On- Board
Equipment” comprises of “Brake interface” & an “onboard
computer “connected to a speed sensor, RFID reader, radio unit,
and display unit.
On-board RFID reader is mounted on the under frame of the
locomotive such that it can read the RFID tags fitted between the
rails and collect data like unique tag id, direction of travel, unique
track identification number (TIN). This data is communicated to
the Station Control Unit through the radio link. Station Control
Unit locates the train in its database, based on the RFID tag ID
and sends the information like approaching signal aspect,
distance to the locomotive.
On- Board equipment uses the information provided by the
Station Control Unit like approaching signal aspect, movement
authority (MA), and collects the speed of the train through
sensors mounted on loco axle to determine whether the loco is
traveling in safe speed limits. In case, the locomotive is running
beyond safe speed an alert is sounded to the loco pilot for 5
seconds before initiating the brakes and bringing the train to a
complete stop.
