Budding Scientist (Tests & Exams)
Science has provided us with swift means of communication. The railways have removed all those
dangers and difficulties that man had to face during a journey in the past. In the aero plane, he can fly
like birds. The globe has shrunk and the world has become a small place. Science has conquered
time and space. Still more wonderful is the invention of the wireless. It is now possible to talk to a person
at a distance of thousands of kilometres.
Additionally, Science has invented many wonderful machines. Electricity is another wonder of
science. It has turned nights into days. In the winter it heats our rooms and in the summer it cools
them. It moves our fans and other machines. Science has also achieved wonders in the field of medicine.
There is now a cure for all kinds of illnesses.
It is not possible to enumerate all the wonders of modern science. Every day we hear of a new
wonder. It is hoped that the peaceful use of every bit of science would bring in an age of prosperity,
that the world has never seen before.

Everyone knows that some objects float in water and that others do not. An object that floats in water
might sink in alcohol, and one that sinks in water might float in glycerin. All liquids possess in varying
degrees the property that is called buoyancy— an upward push upon objects that are submerged within
them.
If you throw a piece of dry wood into a pool, the wood floats; the upward push of the water makes this
possible. An object that sinks in water- like a piece of iron- weighs less when under water than in the air;
this also is because the water exerts an upward pressure upon it. When you are taking a bath in a well-
filled tub, you can raise your whole body easily by a slight pressure of your hands. You could not do this so
easily if you tried to raise yourself from the living-room floor because air is less buoyant than water.
In the third cenutry BC, Archimedes discovered the principle of buoyancy. It states that a body wholly
or partly immersed in a fluid is buoyed upward with a force equal to the weight of volume of liquid it
displaces. Let us imagine that in a full pail of water we place an iron ball that weighs ten pounds when
weighed in air. We discover, however that under water this ball weighs only eight pounds- a loss of two
pounds. The volume of water that spilled over when the ball was placed in the full pail weighs two pounds,
whichjust equals the ball’s loss of weight. The ball is actually buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of
the water it displaces…

You should get out of the habit of sleeping during the evening. Right after your evening meal,
engage in some sort of physical activity – a sport such as bowling, perhaps or get together with friends for
an evening of cards and conversation. Then go to bed at your usual time or a little earlier and you should
be able to get a good night’s rest without taking a pill.
If you can get into the habit of spending your evenings this way, I am sure you will feel less tired
during the day. At first it may be hard for you to go to sleep without taking a pill. If so, get up and watch

Inventions are the result of man’s curiosity about the world around him, and the urge to fill an
expressed need. It was a need for more durable building materials that led man to invent bricks about
4,000 B.C. It was probably just curiosity that led to the invention of the wheel about 3,000 B.C. The date
of the invention of the bow and arrow has been lost in time, but it is fairly certain that was for the
purpose of providing early man with a quicker and surer means of killing animals for food. We look
upon thousands and thousands of things today as commonplace, but at one time the world did not have
them. They all had to be invented.
Inventions have provided our world with matches, telephones, wire, needles and thread, light
bulbs, radio, television, motors, medicines, and even paper and ink. Inventors, being curious and at the
same time seeing need, bring their ideas and the necessary materials together to produce something
new-something that has not existed before – an invention.

Have you ever stopped to think how your life would change if the world ran out of oil? Take a look
at your daily activities.
The roof of your home is probably made waterproof by an oil product, bitumen: The same product
is used for the road surface outside your home. In the kitchen and the bathroom you will probably see
some plastic fittings such as tiles and working surfaces, curtains and detergent. All owe their origin to the
oil known as petroleum which means, in Latin, “Petra”: rock and “Oleum”: oil. Look inside the medicine
cupboard for more products. Cosmetics such as face creams, lipsticks and hair preparations are often
based on petroleum.
Scientifics predict that the world’s known oil resources will run out early in this century. But long
before then the world will have to decide on its priorities. Can we afford to use so much of our limited
Petroleum supplies for private motoring? Should planes compete on similar routes and fly long distances
with empty passenger seats? What alternative energies can be developed?
There is an old English saying, “Necessity is the mother of invention”, which means that when you
are faced with a need, you discover some way to satisfy it. So, our wonderful world is full of renewable
energies: solar, wind, ocean, biomass…

In the ninth century the Arabs became the chief standard-bearers of science and philosophy. The
golden age of Arab science lasted for about two centuries. The world owes a great debt of gratitude to
the Muslim caliphs for their support for learning during this period.
The Arabs made important contributions to mathematics. The most outstanding work in Arabic in
this field was probably the Arithmeticof the Persian Al Khwarizmi. In this treatise the author introduced a
striking innovation _ the number system that we use today and that we call ‘Arabic numerals’. The Arabs
called them gobar numbers. Al-Khwarizmi derived this system from the Hindus. He also wrote a treatise
entitled On Algebra. It was based to a certain extent on Hindu sources. The name ‘algebra’ is of Arabic
origin ; it comes from ‘al-jebr’, meaning ‘ the union of broken parts’.
The Arabs were greatly interested in astronomy. Caliph Ma’mun built a splendid observatory in
Baghdad in the year 829, and his astronomers made regular observations of the heavens. One of the
greatest among the Arab astronomers was Al-Battani. He revised many false notions in Ptolemy’s book
Great Composition, which was translated into the Arabic under the title of the Almagest.
Alchemy had many devotees among the Arabs. The word alchemy itself is of Arabic origin. The
most famous Arab alchemist was Jabir or Jaber, a Syrian physician who lived in the eighth or ninth
century . Jabir perfected new methods of evaporation, filtration and crystallization and he was able to
prepare a number of chemical substances, such as alums, alkalis, saltpetre and mercurieoxide.

Have you ever wondered why massive boats and ships weighing hundreds of tons float while
small objects like rocks sink? Have you ever wondered why when you inhale in a pool you float and
when you exhale you sink to the bottom even though you weigh the same? This phenomenon can
be explained by the scientific principle called buoyancy.
In the third century B.C., the Greek mathematician and physicist Archimedes discovered the
principle of buoyancy. Everyone knows that some objects float in water and others do not. An
object that floats in water might sink in alcohol, and one that sinks in water might float in glycerin.
All liquids possess the property that is called buoyancy- an upward push upon objects that are
submerged within them.
Buoyancy is the upward force that an object feels from the water and when compared to the
weight of the object, it is what makes an object float, sink, or remain neutrally buoyant in the water.
When an object sinks, the weight of the object is greater than the upward buoyant force exerted
by the water and its density is greater than 1 g/cm³. When an object is neutrally buoyant, meaning it
neither sinks nor floats, then the weight of the object is equal to the upward buoyant force exerted
by the water.

We live in the age of science. Science has brought about a lot of changes in the life of man. It is due to
science that man is leading a comfortable and secured life. Technology is very important because it is used in
all fields of life. Just consider your one day routine and count all the technological products which you use in
one single day and you will realize the significance of technology.
Artificial satellites, television, computers and robots are all the gifts of science. Most of the things we use
in our life are the result of the inventions of science. Due to science the world has become smaller. Time and
distance have been overpowered by science. We can reach distant places in a few hours. Even our domestic life
has been changed by science, now we cook our food on gas stoves. Man has achieved great success by
conquering space. In developed countries most of the domestic work is done by robot. Computer is the latest
achievement of our scientists. In medical field also science has brought many changes. X ray machines and
other gadgets help the doctors in revealing the inner portion of the body. Science is being applied in the
agricultural fields. Through science we do not feel heat in summer and cold in winter. We can talk to our
friends and relatives who are at a distance of thousand kilometers. Electricity is now used in place of coal.
Chemicals are being used in fields. It can convert a desert into a fertile land. But science has also produced
deadly weapons for mankind and therefore there is always fear of world war.

Read the following text then do the activities.
Ibn Sina was known as a scientist. He was born in the year 371 of the Hegira near Bukhara in the
Old Persian Empire (modern Uzbekistan).
As a young boy, he read a lot about Islam. He learnt the Quran by heart before he was 10, thanks to his
father who was a good Muslim and took great care of his education.
Later at school, he studied Arabic literature and science, and soon he knew more than his teacher.
At the age of 14, he studied medicine alone by reading hundreds of books and by finding the explanation
to his questions on his own. Before he was 20, Ibn Sina was a well known doctor. One of his patients
was the Sultan of Bukhara whom he treated for a serious illness. When he was cured, the grateful Sultan
allowed Ibn Sina to use his private library in the palace.
There and for two years, Ibn Sina improved his knowledge of medicine by reading books written
by the Greek and Chinese doctors. At the same time, he discovered Aristotle's books. Aristotle was a
famous Greek philosopher.
These quiet years of study were suddenly interrupted by the invasion of Bukhara by the Turks. Life
became difficult and Ibn Sina decided to leave the town. He spent many years living and traveling in the
Arab World. He wrote a lot of books about medicine, philosophy, religion and astronomy. He died in the
428 of the Hegira.

Many of us often wonder what the future holds; some believe major advances in
technology will occur which will result in improvements to our everyday lives. However,
scientists have predicted shortages in fossil fuels and changes in the weather patterns of
the world. However, one significant change that will have an alarming impact on all of us
is the global water shortage.
Analysts have forecast that some of the consequences of this will be mass
migration from Africa to Europe and wars between countries over clean water. The main
causes of this disturbing water shortage are global warming, climate change and the
increasing world population.
Water analysts and government leaders need to start making radical changes to
the way water use is managed. In addition, more things need to be done to control
global warming as this will help to reduce water shortages. People should be made
aware of the situation and they should be warned not to waste water. Multinational
companies should invest in developing better water management systems. In summary,
if we start taking action now, we might be able to prevent a world disaster.

Newton was a physicist and mathematician from England. His work laid the foundation of classical
mechanics (also called Newtonian physics or mechanics in his honor) and is generally credited with jump
starting the scientific revolution.
He discovered the three laws of motion that we all know and love. Newton’s First Law is the law of inertia
and is probably his most widely known law. It basically states that an object at rest remains at rest or an object
in motion remains in motion unless if an outside force acts upon it. Newton’s Second Law is probably the least
known, and basically states that an applied force on an object is equal to the rate of change it its momentum,
but, whereas the law itself isn’t very well known, the equation is – its expressed mathematically as F=ma and
basically means force is equal to the mass of an object times its acceleration. Newton’s Third Law competes
with the first law in popularity, and famously states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite
reaction.

A team of US researchers has come up with an electricity system that does not need
wires. This is a breakthrough in what will hopefully be a wireless future. The scientists, from
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, lit a 60-watt light bulb using magnetic fields. In the
test, the power source was just two metres away from the light, but the team hopes they will
soon be able to send electricity longer distances through the air. They have dubbed their new
invention “WiTricity”, or wireless electricity. Although wi-fi has been around for some years
now, it has been limited to the transmission of information, especially between computers and
modems, printers and scanners. This is the first time electrical appliances have been powered
wirelessly.
This new development means that our houses may be free from tangled wires. Gone
will be the days of having to unplug the vacuum to go from room to room, and of having
countless plugs hidden behind the TV and stereo. The new source of delivering power to gadgets
remotely may also reduce the number of fires caused by poor wiring and overloaded sockets. It
turns out the concept is not so new. A century ago, inventor Nikola Tesla struck upon the idea of
building a huge tower in New York that would wirelessly beam power to the city. Unfortunately,
his idea never came to fruition, until today, that is. It will still be a while before we have wireless
homes and offices. Safety experts will be checking closely to ensure the power source causes us
no harm.
