10 Greek Gods Names in Planets
1. The Sun: The Greek god of the sun was originally Helios in Ancient Greece. This god took on the
name, Sol, during the Roman Age. Over the centuries, Sol was changed into the word that we use
now.
2. Mercury: Because the planet of Mercury passed by so quickly in its orbit. It was perfect to name as
the Greek god Hermes, known to the Roman’s as Mercury.
3. Venus: A smaller planet, close to the Earth. It was named after Aphrodite (daughter of Uranus). For
the Romans, she was known as Venus.
4. Earth: Our planet is the only one that does not have a Greek god's name, Earth comes from an Old
English word ‘Ertha’. The Greek god associated with the Earth was Gaia.
5. Mars: Seen as the ‘red planet’, it was easy to associate this planet with the god of war, Ares. Known
to the Romans as Mars.
6. Jupiter: As the largest planet in the solar system, it was expected that this planet would take on the
name of the king of the gods, Zeus, also known as Jupiter.
7. Saturn: The Romans gave much more interest to the titan, Cronus, than the Greeks did. He was
known as Father Time to the Romans and as an ancient titan, predating the other gods, his name
was perfect for such an ancient ‘gas giant’ planet.
8. Uranus: As another gas giant, orbiting far out into the cold of the solar system. This planet was first
given the name, Ouranus, the Greek name for Uranus (the father of the gods)
9. Neptune: The bright blue planet, sailing through the sky, would only suit one Greek god’s name.
Poseidon. As god of the sea, his name fitted perfectly. Known to the Roman’s as Neptune, the name
was decided.
10. Pluto: As the only rocky planet in the solar system outside the inner solar system, Pluto was seen as
a wasteland. As such, it was given a similarly horrific name. Hades, to the Greeks. Pluto, to the
Romans.
