DEFINITIONS OF TERMS IN PATHOLOGY

1. HEART FAILURE: it is a condition arises when plaque rupture and form a clot in the
artery causing a complete blockage. In heart failure, heart muscle that is denied
blood supply start to die.
2. CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE: it is a disease of arteries that supply blood and
oxygen to the heart, caused decreased blood flow to the heart muscle. if the arteries
become blocked or severely narrowed, the heart becomes starved for oxygen and
nutrients.
3. Autopsy: postmortem evaluation of a body to determine the cause and manner of
death
4. Biopsy: removal of cell or tissues from the body for pathological examinations.
5. Dermatology: the branch of medicine that deals with the skin and diseases
affecting the skin
6. Dermato- pathology: the subspeciality of anatomic pathology which deals with
the skin diseases.
7. Diagnosis: identification of a specific disease by a physician.
8. Gynecological pathology: a subspeciality area of anatomic pathology that
focuses on diseases of female genital tract (breast, uterus, fallopian tube, ovaries,
vagina, vulva).
9. Hematopathology: a subspecialty area of clinical pathology involving the study of
diseases of the blood cell, bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes.
10. Histology: a branch of anatomy that deals with the minute structure of animal and
plant tissues as discernible with microscope.
11. Inflammatory: a term concerning diseases that are caused by white blood cells
which abnormally enter various tissues.
12. Keratosis: a benign growth of cell on the skin surface
13. Lumpectomy: a common procedure to remove a mass from a male or female
breast.
14. Lymphoma: a malignant proliferation of lymphocytes, which are cells involved in
immune functions
15. Malignant: tending to become worse and end in death or having the properties of
anaplasia, invasiveness, and metastasis; said of tumor
16. Molecular pathology: a field in pathology that combines aspects of clinical and
anatomic pathology, with focus on molecular cell components.
17. Neoplasm: an independently growing mass of cells in the skin or elsewhere, which
may be benign or malignant. Neoplasm also are commonly called masses or tumors.
18. Neuropathology: a subspeciality are of anatomic pathology that concerns
diseases of the central nervous system, muscles, and nerves.
19. Pathologist: a doctor who identifies diseases by studying cells and tissues under a
microscope.
20. Pediatric pathology: a subspeciality area of pathology concentrating on diseases
of infants & children
