PR Radiotherapy Shielding Calculation

The document outlines the objectives and calculations necessary for radiotherapy shielding design, focusing on primary and secondary shielding requirements for a new linear accelerator facility. It provides specific locations and design constraints for wall thickness calculations based on patient load and radiation exposure limits. The document also includes formulas for calculating shielding thickness based on workload, occupancy, and distance from the radiation source.

Radiotherapy Shielding Calculation Homework

Objective
• Understand the underlying principles for the design of a radiotherapy facility.
• Be familiar with the safety requirements for the design of radiotherapy facilities
including interlocks, maze design and warning signs.
• Be able to calculate the shielding thickness required for a particular barrier.

Scenario
You have been called to assess the shielding requirements for a new linear accelerator

Location
A
B

Location C above
Primary shielding
The bunker shall house a dual energy linear accelerator with 4 and 10 MV X-Rays and 5
different electron energies. Except for the door all shielding shall be done using ordinary
concrete

Assumptions
50 patients per day, 5 days per week and a dose of 3 Gy delivered at the isocentre (d ref = 1m)
per patient

Find the wall thickness at locations:

A (6 m) – Waiting Room: design constraint 0.3 mSv/y; Occupation factor 0.25
B (5 m) - Another bunker: design constraint 0.3 mSv/y; Occupation factor 0.05
C (5 m) - location above: design constraint 0.3 mSv/y; Occupation factor 0.1

Assumptions:
50 patients per day, 5 days per week and a dose of 3 Gy delivered at the isocentre (d ref = 1m)
per patient

Find the wall thickness at locations:

A’ (6.5 m) – waiting room: design constraint 0.3 mSv/y; Occupation factor 0.25
B’ (5.5 m) - another bunker: design constraint 0.3 mSv/y; Occupation factor 0.05
D (4m) - garden: design constraint 0.3 mSv/y ; Occupation factor 0.0625
E (8 m) – console: design constraint 2.6 mSv/y; Occupation factor 1

Formulas
Primary beam shielding

S = No. of TVLs x TVL

P : the allowed dose per week (Sv/week) outside the barrier
d : the distance from the isocentre to the outside of the barrier, in m
SAD is the source–axis (isocentre) distance, in m;
W is the workload, in Gy/week at 1 m;
U is the use factor;
T is the occupancy factor

Secondary shielding

- Leakage radiation

P : the design dose limit

ds : the distance from the isocentre to the point of interest in m
W : the workload
T : the occupancy factor.

- Scattered radiation by patient

P : the design dose limit

W : the workload
T : the occupancy factor
dsca : the distance from the radiation source to the patient, in m.
dsec : the distance from the patient to the point of interest, in m.
a : the scatter fraction defined at dsca.
The scatter primary ratio (a) is dependent on the energy of the X ray beam and the
scattering angle. These data are tabulated per 400 cm2 of irradiated field area for 60Co, 6,
10, 18 and 24 MV X ray beams in Table 5.
F : the field area incident on the patient, in cm2.

- Scattered radiation by wall
