2.1.- PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Understanding and using the present continuous tense correctly is important both in job
interviews and during work tasks.

This tense allows us to describe ongoing actions and projects in the present moment,
providing a clear picture of our current activities and commitments.

Let's get started!

1. Present continuous

TEXT
PRESENT CONTINUOUS

USES

The present continuous tense is used to talk about:

Actions that are happening right now at the moment of speaking.

Actions that are in progress around the current time.
Temporary actions or situations that are not necessarily happening right at the moment of
speaking but are ongoing for a limited period of time.
Examples: "She is talking on the phone now". "They are preparing for the meeting
tomorrow". "He is working as a waiter while he looks for a permanet job".

STRUCTURE

AFFIRMATIVE: Subject + am/is/are + verb ending in ing.

Example: "He is improving his cooking skills".
NEGATIVE: Subject + am/is/are + not + Verb + ing.
Example: "They are not attending the photography class".
INTERROGATIVE: Am/Is/Are + subject + verb + ing?
Example: "Is she learning how to play the guitar?".
SHORT ANSWERS: Yes, + subject + am/is/are. No, + subject + am/is/are + not.
Example: "Yes, he is. No, he isn't".

When forming the present continuous tense, 'am' is used with 'I', 'is' with 'he', 'she', or 'it', and
'are' with 'we', 'you', or 'they'.

-ING

For most verbs we add -ing to the base form to make the -ing form. Example: eat, eating.
But When the verb ends in -e, we take off the -e and add -ing. move, moving.
If a verb of one syllable has one vowel and ends in a single consonant, this consonant is
doubled before -ing: cut, cutting.
If a verb ends in "ie," change the "ie" to "y" before adding "-ing." Lie - lying.

TIME EXPRESSIONS

We use the present continuous with time expressions such as: now, right now, at the moment, at
present, today, tonight, this morning, afternoon, evening, this week, month, year and while.

PRESENT SIMPLE VS. CONTINUOUS

Both present simple and present continuous tenses are used to talk about the present, but they
have distinct applications.
The present simple tense is used for general truths, habits, and routines, while the present
continuous tense is used for actions happening now or around the present moment.

The present simple tense is used for general truths, habits, and routines.
The present continuous tense is used for actions happening now or around the present
moment.
Stative verbs describe how someone feels, what they own, or what they know, rather than
actions they do. These words are about thoughts, feelings, senses, and states of being.
For example, "like," "have," "know," and "feel" are stative verbs. Unlike action verbs,
stative verbs are usually not used with "ing" endings.
