Skimming

Skimming is reading rapidly in order to get a general overview

of the material. It is useful as a preview to a more detailed
reading or when reviewing a selection heavy in content.

familiarize yourself with the topic and main ideas

find key information in a text

see challenging words or concepts in advance

have an overview of upcoming information

When skimming, you are reading the words quickly to get a sense of

the topics and important ideas. If you think the text will be useful to

you, you can slow down and read in a more focused way, looking for

details and information.

Look over these text elements to get a general

idea of what you are reading:

table of contents

titles, headings and sections

first and last paragraphs

illustrations, pictures, charts, etc.

repeated words

captions

boldface items

Use skimming to quickly go through text to find specific information. If

you see the paragraph or section does not contain what you are

looking for, go on to the next. You first read to find what you need and

then go back to concentrate on the specific details.

When skimming paragraphs, it is important to identify

the key subject. Follow these step:

1. Read the entire introductory paragraph.

2. Next, read only the first and last sentence of each

following paragraph.

3. Once you have done this, you will know if the text

contains the information you need.

4. If you believe you don’t need the information, then

skip it and move to another section!

Skimming on a test helps to set a purpose by giving

you an overview of the questions and content of a

test before starting. Glance quickly over the

sections and questions. Once you have a sense of

the topics and important ideas you can begin to

read the test more closely, sentence by sentence.

Use skimming in previewing (reading before you read), reviewing

(reading after you read), determining the main idea from a long
selection, or when trying to find source material for a research paper.
