Laboratory Activity 6 BAFARM23G

The document outlines a laboratory activity focused on secondary tillage and hitching tillage implements for a course on farm machineries and water management. Students will learn to identify various secondary tillage implements, demonstrate proper hitching techniques, and analyze the effects of tillage on soil structure while adhering to safety precautions. The activity includes procedures for operating implements, recording data, and evaluating individual performance based on specific criteria.

Course: Basic Farm Machineries, Mechanization and Water
Management

Title: Operation and Hitching of Secondary Tillage Implements

Objectives:

By the end of this activity, students should be able to:

1. Identify different types of secondary tillage implements and their uses.

2. Compare primary and secondary tillage based on soil conditions and
implement efficiency.
3. Demonstrate proper hitching and detaching of secondary tillage
implements to a tractor.
4. Observe safety precautions in handling tillage implements.
5. Record and analyze the effects of secondary tillage on soil structure.

Materials and Equipment:

 Tractor (with three-point hitch and drawbar hitch options)

 Secondary tillage implements (harrow, rotavator, cultivator)
 Measuring tape
 Soil moisture tester
 Soil penetrometer (for measuring soil compaction)
 Data recording sheet
 Personal protective equipment (gloves, boots, goggles)

Activity 1: Identifying and Operating Secondary Tillage Implements

Procedure:

1. Observe and identify different secondary tillage implements available
in the laboratory.
2. Discuss the differences between harrows, rotavators, and cultivators.
3. Attach each implement to the tractor using the appropriate hitching
method.
4. Operate the tractor with the attached implement on a designated plot
of land.
5. Compare the effects of secondary tillage on soil texture and
compaction.

Activity 2: Hitching and Detaching Tillage Implements

Procedure:

1. Identify the different types of hitching systems (Three-Point Hitch,

Drawbar Hitch, Quick Hitch).
2. Demonstrate the step-by-step process for hitching and detaching
secondary tillage implements.
3. Ensure proper alignment of the implement with the tractor hitch
system.
4. Check and secure all safety locks and connections before operation.
5. Observe and record any common problems encountered during
hitching and their solutions.

Conclusion & Reflection Questions:

1. What are the key differences between primary and secondary tillage?
2. Which secondary tillage implement provided the best soil condition for
planting? Why?
3. What were the most common issues encountered during hitching, and
how were they resolved?
4. How does proper secondary tillage contribute to soil and crop
productivity?
5. What safety measures should always be considered when working with
tractors and tillage implements?
