DIN 477-1:2012-06

Foreword
This standard was developed by NA 016-00-03 AA in the DIN Standards Committee for Pressurized Gas
Systems (NDG).

This standard contains valve inlet and outlet connections that meet the requirements of DIN EN ISO 10297 for
the use of standardized valve connections.

Specifications for gas cylinder valves for high-purity gases that are not included in other valid European
standards but are still used in the industry have also been included in this document.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some texts in this document may affect patent rights. DIN is not
responsible for identifying any or all patent rights in this respect.

In addition to the legal units, the text of this standard also contains the unit inch (1"), which is not permitted in
Germany. It should be noted that this unit is only used as a thread specification and is not directly related to
the non-approved unit of length inch.

Changes

The following changes have been made to DIN 477-1:1990-05:

a) Designation of the basic shapes of the valve bodies changed;

b) Connection 2 deleted as included in DIN EN 15202;

Introduction
The main purpose of this standard is to assign valve outlet connections to specific gas types in order to
prevent the interchangeability of connections of incompatible gases (e.g. oxygen / hydrogen).

WARNING - The user must ensure that the selected valve outlet connection is not connected to the
connections of other standards, so that a dangerous condition occurs (e.g. leakage, incompatibility).
Due to the large number of connections in use and the large number of national standards, this
precautionary measure cannot be dispensed with.

DIN 477-1:2012-06

1 Area of application
This standard applies to gas cylinder valves according to DIN EN ISO 10297 for compressed, liquefied and
dissolved gases.

This standard specifies inlet and outlet connections of gas cylinder valves for cylinder test pressures up to 300
bar, unless otherwise specified. For gas cylinder valves for breathing apparatus, inlet and outlet connections
are specified in DIN EN 144-1 to DIN EN 144-3. Outlet connections of gas cylinder valves for cylinder test
pressures of over 300 bar to 450 bar are specified in DIN 477-5.

For gas cylinders whose contents are used for medical purposes, gas cylinder valves with outlet connections
according to the pin index system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 407 can be provided.

Outlet connections for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) valves are specified in DIN EN 15202.

4 Designs, dimensions and Designation

The gas cylinder valves for technical purposes are divided into three basic shapes (A, B and C), as shown in
Fig. 1. All three basic shapes are shown in Figure 2 as section A-A. Table 1 shows the minimum values for the
diameter d3 of the basic shape C. Table 2 shows the limiting dimensions for all three basic shapes.

to this standard and valve protection caps according to DIN EN ISO 11117 is not possible in this case.
e This nominal thread size does not apply to gas cylinder valves for fire extinguishing systems.
f For acetylene only.

Designs deviating from the illustrated designs are also permissible, but the specified dimensions must be observed.

5 Assignment of gas types and outlet connections

The outlet connections of the gas cylinder valves for all flammable gases (except the acetylene clamp
connection) should have left-hand threads (LH), the outlet connections of the gas cylinder valves for all other
gases should have right-hand threads.

NOTE 1 For the definition of "flammable gases" see Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, Annex I, Chapter 2.2.

NOTE 2 Exceptions to this rule are, for example, gas mixtures that are not otherwise classified and test gas (non-
flammable), see Table 4.

For gas cylinder valves on single cylinders for acetylene, the valve outlet with clamping bracket must be used.

The outlet connections suitable for the individual gases and the assignment numbers can be found in Tables 3
and 4. For gases and gas mixtures not listed there, the valve outlet connection threads must be specified
separately. The number range of the connection numbers is not assigned consistently (see foreword).

NOTE 3 For some types of gas, gas-tight plugs or caps are prescribed in the transport regulations (e.g. RID/ADR/ADN,
packing instruction P 200).

The threads of the outlet connections and the associated mating parts must comply with the specifications in
7.1 of this standard.

A brief overview of the allocations is given in Appendix A.

a The specified designations of the gases and gas mixtures correspond to those in RID/ADR/ADN:2011, packing instruction P 200.
The designations used in square brackets are the designations according to IUPAC or generally used designations.
b The classification of ammonia is "flammable" according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
c Different UN numbers are assigned depending on the composition of the gas mixture.

6 Dimensioning and design of the output connections

Details not specified are to be selected according to purpose.

EXAMPLE Design of the union nut.

External threads must be provided with a threaded outlet, a threaded groove or an undercut, which must be
adapted to the design requirements of the valve.

NOTE Most of the following images show thread undercuts.

Nuts with a left-hand thread must be marked with a groove running over the hexagon. Lock nuts may
optionally be marked with a directional arrow with the addition "Fixed" on the face to indicate the left-hand
thread.

The following figures show sealing ring seals for tapping nozzles; seals with O-rings are also permitted.

The general tolerances ISO 2768-mk apply.

As a rule, the bore is arranged parallel to the output connection axis, as shown in the following illustrations.
However, deviations are permitted for certain applications.

7.2 Thread for inlet connections (gas cylinder and valve)

7.2.1 Gas cylinder neck internal thread and valve nozzle external thread

The majority of input connections are defined by other standards. These are,

for example
⎯ Metric threads (M18, M25 and M30) in accordance with DIN EN ISO 15245-1 and DIN EN 144-1;

⎯ Conical threads 25E and 17E according to DIN EN ISO 11363-1.

7.2.2.1 Application

This section applies to gas cylinder valves for gases and gas mixtures which are subject to increased
requirements in terms of purity and which are used, for example, in the manufacture of microelectronics.

NOTE Valves with outlets in accordance with DIN EN ISO 10692-1 are usually used for this type of gas cylinder
connection

8 Materials
The physical and chemical properties of metallic and non-metallic materials must be compatible with the
gases used and the intended operating conditions (see e.g. DIN EN ISO 11114-1 and DIN EN ISO 11114-2),
including sealing nuts and plugs.

If non-metallic sealing rings are used, a minimum Shore hardness of (90 ± 5) Shore A in accordance with DIN
53505 must be ensured.
