Physics Assignment: Circular Motion
Total Marks 34
1. (a) Explain why there must be a force acting on a particle which is moving with uniform
speed in a circular path. Write down an expression for its magnitude. [3]
2. An object of mass 4 kg moves round a circle of radius 6 m with a constant speed of 12
ms-1. Calculate (i) the angular velocity, (ii) the force towards the centre. [5]
3. A conical pendulum consists of a small massive bob hung from a light string of length 1
m and rotating in a horizontal circle of radius 30 cm.
(a) With the aid of a diagram indicate what forces are acting on the bob.
(b) How do you account for the motion of the bob?
(c) Deduce the speed of rotation of the bob. [6]
4. A mass of 0.4 kg is rotated by a string at a constant speed v in a vertical circle of radius 1
m. If the minimum tension of the string is 3N, calculate
(a) v [2]
(b) the tension when the string is just horizontal. [2]
(c) the maximum tension. [2]
(d) If the string breaks during rotation;
(i) state with a reason the position of the circle where it is likely to break. [2]
(ii) sketch the path which the mass will follow when it breaks. [2]
(iii) if the centre of rotation is 3 m above the ground, find the time taken by the
0.4 kg mass to hit the ground. [2]
(iv) calculate the horizontal distance between where the mass breaks and where it
hits the ground. [2]
5. What is the smallest radius of an unbanked curve around which a bicycle can travel if her
speed is 10 km/h and the coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road is
0.32? [3]
6. A circular curve of a highway is designed for traffic moving at 60 km/h.
(a) If the radius of the curve is 150 m, what is the correct angle of banking of the road?
[2]
(b) If the curve were not banked, what would be the minimum coefficient of friction
between the tires and the road that would keep the traffic from skidding at this speed?
[2]
