Section A [45 marks]
Answer all questions.
1. The number of hours for which a certain type of dry battery worked satisfactorily (its life)
was measured for a sample of 100 batteries, with the following results:
Life (centre of interval) 90 95 100 105 110 115 120 125 130
Frequency 2 17 30 21 15 9 3 2 1
Estimate
(a) The mean life of the sample and the standard deviation.
[4m]
(b) The proportion of the sample that had lives which deviated by less than one standard
deviation from the mean. [3m]
(c) The median life of the sample. [2m]
2. Seven coins, of which 3 are silver and 4 are copper, are in a box. A random selection of 3
coins is made and the coins so selected are placed in a purse (Purse A). The remaining coins
are placed in a second purse (Purse B). Find the probability that there are at least 2 silver
coins in purse A.
[3m]
On a particular occasion, it is known that purse A has in it 2 silver coins and 1 copper coin,
and that the remaining coins are in purse B. If one coin is then drawn at random from a purse
selected at random, find the probability that the coin is silver. [3m]
3. A discrete random variable takes integer values between 0 and 6 inclusive with
probabilities given by P( ) .
(a) Tabulate the probability distribution of .
[2m]
(b) Find the expectation and variance of . [5m]
4. The random variable measures the reliability of a electric kettle. A random sample of 80
independent observations of is taken and the results are summarised by = 930 and
= 11130.
(a) Calculate an unbiased estimate of mean and variance of .
[5m]
(b) Calculate a 95% symmetrical interval for the population mean .
[4m]
5. A manufacturer claim that the battery for calculators is last for 2000 hours with standard
deviation of 25.5 hours. A sample of 200 of these batteries was tested, the mean life was 1995
hours. Test at 1% level of significance, whether the manufacturer’s claim is true.
[6m]
6. Over a period of 100 days, the number of deaths (of people over 80) recorded in a local paper
are as follows:
Number of death in a day 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 or more
Number of days 24 39 19 11 5 2 0
Test, at 5% level of significance, the hypothesis that the number of death follows a Poisson
distribution with mean 1.35.

Section B [15 marks]
Answer one question only.
You may answer all the questions but, only the first answer will be marked.
7. Soap powder is packed in packets of two sizes. The mass in each small packet may be
regarded as normal variable with mean 505 g and standard deviation 10 g while the mass in
each large packet is another independent normal variable with mean 1005 g and standard
deviation 20 g.
(a) Find the probability that the mass of one random chosen large packet is less than 1000 g.
[3m]
(b) Find the probability that the mass of one random chosen large packet exceeds the total
mass of two randomly chosen small packet.
[3m]
(c) Find the probability that the mass of one randomly chosen large packet is less than twice
the mass of one randomly chosen small packet.
[4m]
(d) Five large packets and ten small packets are chosen at random. Find the probability that
the average mass of all the fifteen packets chosen between 665 g and 675 g.
[5m]
8. A particular publisher state that the mean number of page in each book, , is 153. In a random
sample of 150 books from the publisher, the number of pages in each book, , is noted. The
results are summarised by ( – 154) = 150 and ( – 154)2 = 11000. Test whether the
publisher has understated the mean number pages in each book at the 7% level of
significance.

]
Determine a 93% confidence interval for .
[3m]
The publisher claims that 80% of the books he prints are fantastic and romance, and the
remaining are science fiction. In the above sample, 80 books are fantastic, books are
romance and the remaining are science fiction. Find the greatest value of such that the
sample provides significant evidence, at 3% level, that the proportion of books on romance
and fantasies has been overstated.
