EXPERIMENT #7: WRITING FORMULAS (THE INORGANIC COMPOUNDS)

The Writing of chemical formulas requires knowledge of the symbols of

elements and their oxidation numbers. A correct formula must always show
that the algebraic sum of the total oxidation numbers is equal to zero.

In writing formulas, the symbol of the cation (positive ion) is written first and
then followed by the symbol of the anion (negative ion).

When the ions have the same oxidation numbers, they unite in a one-to-one
ratio. For the polyatomicions/radicals use a parenthesis when necessary.

OBJECTIVE:

To be able to write the correct formulas of some inorganic compounds using

their symbols and oxidation

numbers.

MATERIAL: Periodic Table of Elements

PROCEDURE:

Write the correct formulas of the following inorganic compounds. Consult the
periodic table for the symbols

and oxidation number of these elements.
