Fuel Notes

The document outlines safety protocols for fuel system maintenance, emphasizing the importance of avoiding metal-on-metal contact and purging fuel tanks to prevent ignition from static electricity. It details the functions of various components in the fuel system, including the main metering, idle cutoff, and mixture control systems, which manage fuel delivery and air-fuel ratios during different engine operations. Additionally, it specifies the need for a fire extinguisher on hand and establishes guidelines for determining unusable fuel supply in tanks.

No metal on metal contact

Static electricity ignites fuel vapor

Purging fuel tank before any repair is a necessity
Fire extinguisher must be on hand when doing any fuel system maintenance using a
simple c02 style
The unusable fuel supply for each tank must be established it cannot be less than
that quantity at which the first evidence of malfunctioning appeats under the most
adverse fuel condition occurring under each intended operation and flight maneuver
involving that tank.
8:1 and 16:1 max ranges of fuel air ratio
MIAMIP Main metering, idling, accelerating, mixture, idle cutoff, power enrichment
economizer
Main metering supplies fuel to the engine at all speeds above idling
Idle cutoff allows fuel shutoff to the engine, incorporated in the manual mixture
control stops fuel discharge from the carburetor
Accelerating system suspplies fuel during sudden increases in engine power. When
throttle is opened the airflow through the carburetor increases to obtain more power
from the engine
Mixture control system determins ratio of fuel air in the mixture by means of cockpit
control can select the mixture ratio to suit operating conditions
Power enrichment automatically increases the richness of the mixture during high
power operation it makes possible the variation in fuel air ration necessary for
conditions
At cruising speeds a lean mixture is desirable for economy. It is a valve closed at
cruising speeds and opened to supplyextra fuel to the mixture during high power
operation
Automatic mixture control ha bellows at 28hg and expand as altitude rises
restricting flow of air
