Spelling rules third person-s


• Most verbs add –s to the base form
Work-works, live-lives, belong-belongs
• You have to add –es if the verb ends in: -s, -o, - x, - sh,
-ch.
Miss-misses, go-goes, fax-faxes, finish-finishes, watch-
watches
• If the verb ends in a consonant+y, the -y changes to -i
and adds –es
Study-studies
If the -y is preceded by a vowel then it follows the
general rule (-s) say-says, play-plays

Spelling rules –ing

Most verb adds-ing: work-working, feel. feeling, marry-


marrying
If the verbs ends in consonant+ e, they omit the –e and
add –ing: make-making, have-having
Verbs ending in ie change to y before-ing: lie-lying, die-
dying
Verbs of two or more syllables ending in a consonant
+vowel +consonant, double the final consonant if the
stress is on the final syllable: prefer-preferring, admit-
admitting
Examples:
Affirmative: They are listening to music

Negative: They aren’t listening to music

Interrogative: Are they listening to music?

Affirmative: She is studying

Negative: She isn’t studying

Interrogative: Is she studying?
