Subject Code Math 2 Intermediate Algebra

Module Code 0 Alternative Assessments

Lesson Code 1 Learning Journal
Time Allocation: 60 Minutes (for Goal Setting and Reflection Paper)
10 minutes weekly for learning log

TARGET
After completing this assessment, the students would have been able to
▪ set learning goals for the first quarter;
▪ reflect on their learning experiences amid the “new normal” throughout the quarter;
▪ reflect on what they have achieved so far in relation to their set goals in the first paper.

HOOK

This school year, we have to make adjustments and deal with many unfamiliar things. The
future may seem scarier since things are a bit chaotic now, but trust that everything will be okay. Now
more than ever, it is important to keep ourselves motivated and directed in order for us to thrive.
This portfolio is designed to help you in planning ahead and in keeping you focused and
motivated. Hopefully, this will also help you discover more things about who you are as a learner.

IGNITE

Your learning journal (Portfolio 1) consists of three parts. By the end of the quarter, you are
expected to compile these into one file (unless your teacher requires you to use a blog for these):
Part 1 – Goal Setting
Set specific goals for this school year. Goals keep you focused and directed.
Part 2 – Weekly Learning Logs
Keep track of your progress. Are you pursuing your goals? How are you in
Math? Are your learning strategies effective?
Part 3 – Reflection
What realizations do you have? What challenges did you encounter and how
did you deal with these?

Part 1 Guidelines
In essay form, discuss three of the goals that you want to achieve in this course this school year.
Your goals may be about specific Math skills or topics that you want to master, learning strategies and
skills that you want to try or improve, or values that you want to develop in order to be a successful
learner. Set SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals. Avoid setting
goals that are vague and poorly framed because you might just end up getting lost and frustrated.
Consider the questions on the next page in discussing your goals.

Mathematics 2 Page 1 of 6
Think about these:
1. What exactly do I want to achieve?
2. Why does achieving this goal matter to me? Is this a worthwhile goal?
3. What steps do I have to take to achieve this goal?
4. What do I need to meet this goal? Do I have the resources to follow through with this goal?
5. Who can possibly help me in achieving this goal?
6. What things/factors can prevent me from achieving your goals?
7. How will I measure my progress?
8. What is the timeframe of my goal? When am I going to start working on this goal? When
do I need to complete this goal?
This paper may be handwritten or encoded using any word processor. If your teacher instructs
you to, your output may also be encoded directly in Moodle (as a blog entry). Use a letter- or A4-sized
paper with 1-inch margin at all sides. You are free to use any font style and font size, but please make
sure that all texts are readable. You are also required to come up with a creative title for your paper –
something that suits the content of your work. You may also include graphics in your output. Use the
grading rubric found in the Navigate section as a guide in writing your paper.
Save your work as a PDF file (scan or take a picture of your work if it’s handwritten). Follow
this file name format:
<ClassNumber> <LastName>, <FirstName> - 1Q P1 Goal Setting
(example: A07 Dela Cruz, Juan – 1Q P1 Goal Setting)
Coordinate with your teacher regarding the date and mode of submission.

Part 2 Guidelines
At the end of every week, reflect on the things that you have learned and accomplished. Be
guided by the questions found in the Weekly Learning Log template found in Annex A.
Communicate with your teacher regarding the paper specifications and submission process.
Here are two possible online submission protocols:

• Option 1: Create your learning log in a Google document (follow the format in Annex A).
Share the document to your teacher and update the document every week. Try your best to
update your entries on or before the set deadline.

• Option 2: Create a blog page for your weekly learning logs. Update the page every week. Try
your best to update your entries on or before the set deadline.

Part 3 Guidelines
Reflect on everything that happened this quarter. Share your realizations in essay form. Be guided
by the questions below:
1. How is learning amid the “New Normal” working out for you?
2. Do you think you fully understood the 1st quarter topics?
3. Are your current learning strategies working for you?
4. What challenges did you encounter this quarter? How were you able to address these?

Mathematics 2 Page 2 of 6
5. How are you in terms of achieving your set goals? Do you think these are still possible to
achieve?
6. How do you think will the second quarter be different compared to the first quarter?
7. What message do you have for your teacher? for your future self?
Just like the Goal Setting paper, this paper may be handwritten or encoded using any word
processor. If your teacher instructs you to, your output may also be encoded directly in Moodle (as a
blog entry). Use a letter- or A4-sized paper with 1-inch margin at all sides. You are also required to
come up with a creative title for your paper – something that suits the content of your work. You may
also include graphics in your output. Use the grading rubric found in the Navigate section as a guide in
writing your paper.
Save your work as a PDF file (scan or take a picture of your work if it’s handwritten). Follow
this file name format:
<ClassNumber> <LastName>, <FirstName> - 1Q P1 Reflection
(example: A07 Dela Cruz, Juan – 1Q P1 Reflection)
Coordinate with your teacher regarding the date and mode of submission.

KNOT

“The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting and achieving goals.”
- Og Mandino, American Author
We hope that this portfolio will help develop in you the habit of setting and pursuing goals.
Hopefully, this portfolio will also help you realize what learning strategies work best for you.
This portfolio is also helpful to your teachers. Through this portfolio, we can identify the
misconceptions that you have (if there are any) regarding the topics covered in the modules, and we’d
be able to learn more about you – your strengths, weaknesses, and learning strategies.
