Coronavirus disease also referred to as COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease caused
by new virus. This disease causes respiratory illnesses such as flu, and it is characterized by
various symptoms, for instance, coughing, fever. In the severe cases, there could be difficulties
in breathing. Corona Virus is a global and worldwide pandemic, which is worsened by the fact
that there is no known medication or vaccine for treating this virus. The first case of corona virus
was detected in Wuhan, China with little knowledge that it would become a global concern.
Based on the information from the China case, this virus is believed to have been caused by
seafood and the market meat. As a result of this occurrence, the virus spread to other countries
such as United States, Italy and Africa at large (Yang, Wang, Li, Chen, Li, Qiu & Chen, 2020).
Despite the quarantine measures taken by the Wuhan, there has been spreading of this virus to
approximately seventy locations internationally.
Currently, the United States of America is reporting the highest number of cases, that is
277,491 confirmed cases, followed by Italy with 119,827 cases and lastly Spain with 119,199
confirmed cases. Worldwide, the number of confirmed cases of the Corona virus is 1,100,283.
Based on the data and information presented by the Hopkins University, approximately fifty-four
thousand people has lost their lives worldwide as a result of this COVID-19. According to the
information presented by the WHO, COVID-19 is a combination of families of viruses, causing
illnesses ranging from cold to severe diseases, such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome)
or even the MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) (de Groot, Baker, Baric, Brown, Drosten,
Enjuanes & Perlman, 2013).
Symptoms of the infection of the corona virus include: fever, coughing, difficulties in
breathing and breath shortness. In cases whereby this infection is severe, there could be
incidences of pneumonia, failure of the functioning of different organs eventually resulting to
Corona Virus 3
death. Based on the current estimations, incubation period takes fourteen days, that is the time of
the infection and the showing of these symptoms. The most vulnerable to this corona virus is the
older people and the individuals having medical problems such as cardiovascular disease,
respiratory disease which is chronic as well as diabetes (Huang, Wang, Li, Ren, Zhao, Hu &
Cheng, 2020). Additionally, the individuals with an immune system which is weak are like to
develop severe symptoms, for instance, pneumonia or even bronchitis.
Infection of this corona virus is caused by the interaction of humans and animals, after
which it spread amongst the human beings. COVID-19 is spread through contact with body
fluids through the droplets in the event of cough. It may also be caused by the touching of
something, for example, an object which has been an infected person. After touching the infected
thing, one can be infected if he or she touches the mouth, the eyes or even the nose with the
infected hands (Novel, C. P. E. R. E. (2020). Although there is a lot of scientific research being
carried on, it has been noted that the vaccine developed will only be available for massive
distribution in 2021.
Meanwhile, most of the countries are developing different measures for the mitigation of
the possibility of spreading. Some of the measures being developed include the following:
nationwide lockdowns, banning of gatherings, closing of schools and other places such as sports
clubs, restaurants and even bars. Most of these countries are advocating for the idea of working
from home. There has been the cancellation of flights across different parts of the world as a way
of avoiding increased spreading of this corona virus. In other countries, there has been the
implementation of the total ban of the entry of non-citizens to their territories, with others
conducting massive evacuation of their citizens from the countries abroad (Wang, Horby,
Hayden & Gao, 2020). The uncertainty and the risks associated with Corona virus scares the
Corona Virus 4
world, which is even heightened by the realization that there is yet no known vaccine of cure for
this virus.
Reports presented by the WHO on 30th January, have clearly indicated corona virus a
global emergency, with increased cases being reported in March, making corona virus to be
declared a pandemic crisis. Alerts are being made by the international health for the cooperation
and coordination of the various responses based on the guidelines being given and issues by
WHO. Different preventative measures are being advocated in different countries, as a way of
mitigating the spreading of corona virus. The most common preventive measure being advocated
is the practicing of social distancing. Additionally, people are encouraged to avoid meeting with
sick persons. People are also being advised to cover their mouth with tissue or handkerchief
when coughing and avoid coughing in their hands (Chen, Wang, Li, Yu, Xia, Zhang & Yang,
2020). Thorough and frequent washing of hands with sanitizers or even soaps is being
encouraged as a way of minimizing the possibility of spreading.
Despite the research by the scientists and the medical practitioner’s in inventing a cure
for corona virus, no vaccine has been discovered so far. What this means is that doctors only
prescribe drugs and medication for the reported or diagnosed symptoms. People are being
advised by the FDA to be tentative of the stores or even the websites selling products, with the
claims or preventing, treating and even curing COVID-19. As well, people are advised to avoid
taking any chloroquine form unless prescribed by the doctor or even purchased from sources
which are legitimate. To the individuals who have been infected with the virus, wearing of
facemask is being advocated for the prevention of spreading of the virus to other individuals.
