1 Basic Tools for Discipleship

Introduction

As a teacher you are in charge of clearly explaining the Scriptures and bringing your Bible students to a level of
Kingdom culture. One of the branches of discipleship (and we believe it is the most important) is when a
culture is transferred, in other words, when what was learned and taught by the Lord Jesus is inherited to the
different ages of the church.

The intention of this manual is not only to acquire knowledge or transfer knowledge but also to transfer a new
lifestyle with a new birth in Christ Jesus, which we call kingdom culture.

As a teacher you have the responsibility to: Explain, Illustrate and Apply the Word of God in the lives of the
students in a practical and simple way.

Be clear and simple when you are teaching, learn the lesson before presenting it in class. Take time to pray for
the students and for God to use them effectively so that the teaching is enjoyable and pleasing to the
listeners.

We recommend that you do not regard the lesson lightly or in haste, it’s important to take the time for
students of God's Word to learn to search the Scriptures for themselves. Be open to listening to their opinions
and responses and then take the time to correct them as necessary.

When the twelve lessons are over, take time to graduate everyone who joyfully completed the study of the 12
Basic Tools for Discipling New Converts. Print a diploma (certificate), hold a mini-graduation to motivate
others in the congregation to join the next discipleship of God's Word. In that way you continue to motivate
believers to have the desire to know more about God in the Scriptures as part of the culture of the church and
above all as born again Believers in Christ.

We want to begin this discipleship of basic tools for new believers, teaching The Roman Road. What is the
Roman Road? The Romans in their ancient times were the first to make routes to reach distant places,

2 Basic Tools for Discipleship
therefore this teaching is called the path of the Romans and we also call it that since we will use verses from
the book of the Romans that show us the path to go to heaven.
When you study these verses below it is recommended that you meditate on them and take some time to
reflect and learn to apply them in your life. They will teach you the most important gift that a human being
could receive and this is Salvation.

#1 Salvation
Romans 3:23
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (KJV)
Every human being is born with the need to be saved. To achieve salvation, genuine, true repentance of all sins
committed is necessary. Sins separate us from God. It is necessary to recognize the Lord Jesus as your only
Savior to enter heaven and, above all, be saved, free from the condemnation of sin.
How does this repentance thing work? The Biblical recommendation in Romans 10:9 is that we confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord and acknowledge him in your heart.

You can pray like this: Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I realize I cannot be saved from my sins without you. I
believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins, was buried and rose again the third day, as Your Word the Bible
says. Right now, I confess my sins to you. Please forgive all of my sins, I repent of my sins and I give you my life
from this day on. Thank you, God for saving me of the punishment of my sins. Help me to live for you from this
day on and I look forward to an eternity in heaven with you. In Jesus’ precious Name, Amen.

#2 Jesus died for you

Romans 5:8
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (KJV)
The greatest demonstration of love that a human being can experience is for someone to take his or her place
of guilt, here we see how Christ takes that place that belonged to me, that belonged to you and thanks to that
wonderful decision to give God your life today, you can have a Savior, someone to be eternally grateful for.
Our lives now depend on God and not on ourselves as we receive His forgiveness and accept Him as our Savior,
taking our place on the cross and dying for us.

#3 Salvation is a gift of God

Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (KJV)
Salvation is a gift from God for our lives, if we receive and accept that gift our lives will change forever. The
payment for sin is eternal death, but God's gift is eternal life with Him in heaven.
This gift is not earned by good works or by behaving well, this gift is received by recognizing my condition as a
sinner and accepting forgiveness in my heart as my free gift of salvation. I am sure that no one wants to live an
eternal life away from God, since without God there is only sadness and pain, He has come so that we do not
suffer but to give us true peace.

#4 My works do not save me

“For by grace are y saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any
man should boast.” (KJV)

If our salvation were by works, the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus would be in vain. Grace is the undeserved gift,
God chooses, to bless us instead of cursing us. This is through faith that we put in Jesus Christ our Savior.

3 Basic Tools for Discipleship
(See Romans 11:6)

#5 Salvation is by faith

What is faith?

Faith is believing in God, it is having hope in something that we do not see, but we are sure that it will happen.
Faith is power, action and conviction by putting all our trust in God and his promises. We are justified and not
condemned because God is so good to us.
(See Hebrews 11:1)

#6 Call out to God for Salvation

Romans 10:9

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God
hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto
righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith,
whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the
Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the
name of the Lord shall be saved.” (KJV)

What is “call upon”?

• Call on someone, especially a higher power, for help or protection.
• Ask someone for help

What does the word “call upon” mean in the Bible?

The meaning of calling upon in Hebrew and Greek

• In Hebrew, the original language of the Old Testament, the word translated invoke in English means to
call out or cry out for help.

• And in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, the word means to invoke a person, to call a
person by his or her name.

4 Basic Tools for Discipleship

Tool #1
The new birth
When we talk about the new birth, we remember the first man that heard
about this from Jesus. That man’s name was Nicodemus. Jesus tells
Nicodemus that he has to be born again to see the Kingdom of God and then Nicodemus asks this question to
the Lord Jesus: how can a man be born again? (John 3:1-22)
Jesus tells him that everyone must be born of water and the Spirit in order to enter the kingdom of God. To be
born again is to recognize Jesus as our only Savior. (To be born of water is when we are born into this earth.)

To Be Saved
1. What do I need to do to enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:3)
To be born again

2. Who has eternal life? (John 3:15-16)

Anyone who believes in Him

3. Who is the Son of man? (John 3:13)

He who ascended to heaven

My Confession of FAITH
In order to be saved and born again it is necessary to make a confession of faith and repent of my sins.
How do you do this?
Evangelize the lost ones Teach the Christians Send to make Disciples
5 Basic Tools for Discipleship
Praying a prayer of faith repenting of my sins, believing that Jesus hears me and comes to live in my heart
forever and thus begin my new life in Christ Jesus.

4. How am I saved? (Romans 10:9)

Confess and believe

5. Why is it important to confess Jesus with my mouth? (Romans 10:10)

To be saved and show salvation

Let's see it in the following verse in a clearer way:

2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold new things have
come.” (NASB)

The experience you just had when you received Jesus as your only Savior is called a new birth, now you are no
longer an orphan in the world because you have become a child of God, a new creature, the bad things that
condemned you have left behind and forgiven, now you are free and the Lord has made everything new in
your life.

I’m a New Creature and a Child of God

6. The Bible says we were judged. Why? (John 3:18)

If we do not believe we are judged

7. What was my old life like? (Romans 3:23, Ephesians 2:1-5)

Sinful

8. What is my life like now in Christ Jesus? (2 Corinthians 5:17)

A new creation

9. I have received Him as my Savior now I am a Child of God

(John 1:12)

Now you know what it means to be “born again.” This is just the beginning of a journey that lasts for an
eternity, God has planned a wonderful plan for you, move forward learning more about Him and His Word. We
look forward to seeing you next week excited to continue guiding your life along the path designed by God for
each of us.

Tool #2
Justification
Justification is the work that the Lord Jesus does in us, and thanks to that
work of grace, he gives us the opportunity to present ourselves clean without guilt before God. Let’s clarify
that justification is not us paying for our sins, He did it for us.
Jesus presents us righteous without condemnation before the Father. This work was necessary so that
we could achieve absolute freedom from our condition, totally separated from God by our sins.
Today we can celebrate that we are free in Christ and that we are justified by faith in Him.

Key Verse
Romans 3:23-24 (NASB)
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the
redemption which is in Christ Jesus,”

1. Who was in sin? And who can be justified?

Everyone

2. What is the condition of man without Christ? (Isaiah 59:2)

We are separated from God and he hides his face from us

3. Why do we need to believe in Jesus? Respond in your own words.

So you can be saved from your sins and live a new life through Him

Without Christ Jesus, you are condemned to death; therefore, you need Justification through Jesus’ sacrifice
on the cross of Calvary.

Justification is not earned by our own merits; it is a gift: the believer goes from being guilty to being free.
Romans 3:20-24

4. Who was delivered over for our transgressions? (Romans 4:24-25)

Jesus

Evangelize the lost ones Teach the Christians Send to make Disciples
7 Basic Tools for Discipleship

5. By what means are we Justified? (Romans 5:1)

Faith

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, (Romans 5:1)

6. By His blood we are justified. (Romans 5:9)

7. The Law has become our teacher to lead us to Christ, for

so that we may be justified by faith. (Galatians 3:24)

The Results of Justification

8. Acts 13:38-39
According to these verses, we are freed through Christ’s forgiveness, something that could not come with the
Law of Moses. It is for everyone who believes.

9. According to Romans 5:1, with whom do we have peace?

God.

10. Read Isaiah 61:10 to see how God’s love is made manifest to you.

Do you believe that the Lord Jesus died for you?

_____ yes, I believe it.
_____ I don't believe it.

Are you grateful for his sacrifice and death?

_____ yes, I am grateful.

Do you believe there is Salvation outside of Him? _______Yes __________ No

Justification in Christ Jesus comes to give you a new position, his righteousness becomes that dynamic force in
all the days of your life. You changed from being a prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment to being a child of
God free from all condemnation.

Tool #3
My Christian Life
What is a Christian?

A Christian is a person with a radical change caused by having a personal encounter with Jesus, the
messenger of the cross. When we receive Jesus as our Savior and make Him the total Owner of our lives, we
become Christians (followers of Christ).
By having that personal encounter there is a new beginning of our Christian life, a life with a new
direction and a new focus (following Jesus). Now my goal is heaven and it is not to live life as I want, now my
life is directed by the Holy Spirit of God. My Christian life is to follow Jesus, because He is “the way, the truth
and the life.”

John 14:6 (NASB)

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

Through WHOM can we get to the FATHER?

Jesus.

To be a Christian is to live as God commands, to leave the past things that separate us from God and to
receive everything that God has promised us. Therefore, to have a Christian life is to have a new culture, a
new lifestyle; It is to surrender completely to the Lord Jesus, it is to allow Him to be the center of my entire
daily life. It's more than going to church 3 times a week, it's having a new lifestyle with my friends, at work,
at school, in short, wherever he wants me to be, it's having a relationship with God.

Colossians 1:13 (NASB)

“For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,”

The main idea of Christianity is that we experience a change by receiving Christ Jesus as our Savior. That
change does not occur by receiving certain human rules, that change is made by the Holy Spirit in our lives by
receiving Jesus as our Savior.

2. According to the previous verse He rescued us from the domain of the darkness

and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved son.

For you to grow in the Christian life, it is necessary that you belong to a community of believers (church),
where you learn to study the Word of God and some spiritual disciplines that will accompany you throughout
your entire life as a Christian. Now you belong to the Kingdom of God, to the Kingdom of light, not darkness,
this means that with your new birth you will begin to gradually (little by little) leave behind bad habits and old
customs that separated you from God.

10 Spiritual Disciplines

John 15:19 (NASB)

“If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose
you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.”

Every born-again Christian is no longer of this world. Jesus chose we Christians to free us from this world full of
sin and darkness, thanks to his infinite love today we can have a new life, full of faith and hope.

3. Why will the world hate you?

Because I no longer am of the world, I am chosen out of the world by Jesus.

Galatians 3:26-27 (NASB)

“For you are all sons [and daughters] of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized
into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

4. The previous verses reveal to us that we are sons [daughters] of God through faith in Christ Jesus. It also
relates that by being baptized into Christ we also are clothed with Christ. Now we have a new suit, therefore,
our Christian life must reflect the character of Christ, think like him and act like he teaches us in the Scriptures.
We have to be genuine and sincere followers with ourselves and with God.

A. My goal is heaven

B. My values are the Word of God

C. My new family is the Church

D. My life is new in Christ

E. My life is no longer of this world

F. My future is hope

G. My way and my light is Jesus

H. My new habits are: reading the Word, praying, attending church, loving my neighbor, bearing witness to

Romans 12:2 (NASB)

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the

renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and
perfect.”

My Christian life is a constant renewal of my mind. With my renewed mind I can check what God's will
is for my life. If I am a Christian I will not conform to being and having a life like people without Christ Jesus,
now I understand that I am chosen to live for God and I know that it is a great privilege and responsibility.

The Holy Spirit

Having Jesus in your heart is a wonderful experience, however, there
is something more that God wants to give you. The Lord Jesus, before
leaving for heaven, promised that he would send the Holy Spirit, who
would give us power to be his witnesses.

Acts 1:8 (NASB)

1. Where will the disciples of Jesus be witnesses? Jerusalem, Judea,
Samaria and even to the remotest part of the earth.

name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all
that I said to you. Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let
your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.

When we were saved from our sins, we received the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit fills us, it cleanses our
old self and gives us power, power to live a victorious life and power to witness of Christ to others.

Read Romans 8:1-16 (NASB)

3. The Spirit Himself dwells with our spirit that we are children of God and we do not live anymore according

1. Love 2. Joy 3. Peace 4. Patience

5. Kindness 6. Goodness 7. Self control 8. Gentleness 9. Faithfulness

Tool #5
Prayer

How do I talk to God?

It's very simple, it's like talking to a friend. Prayer becomes the key to our communion with God, it’s speaking
with confidence about anything and at any time. Prayer is an intimate, personal communication with the
Father. Praying is talking to God in a simple and clear way.

1. Psalm 91:15-16 (NASB)

“ He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in
trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With a long life
I will satisfy him and let him see My salvation.”

• Time spent with the Lord in prayer can release the most wonderful, life-changing power this world has
ever experienced or known. Prayer has the power to change circumstances, if it is God's will.
• You need to learn about prayer, God doesn’t always say ‘yes’ to everything we ask Him for, God has the
last word and He does His will as He wants. Thanks to His mercy and promises, He helps us and always
gives us an answer.
• Prayer is not just to asking, it is to have communion with the heavenly Father. The Holy Spirit helps us
to ask as we should and also teaches us to have full communion through prayer. You should have a daily
prayer habit, since through it the power of God is unleashed on us, His children.

PERSONAL PRAYER

2. Matthew 6:6 (NASB)

Evangelize the lost ones Teach the Christians Send to make Disciples
14 Basic Tools for Discipleship
But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close

your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your

Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

3. We have been invited to intimate prayer by none other than the Lord Himself. In the secret place we get to
have:
a. The right heart motives, not like the hypocrites (Matthew 6:5)

b. Right relationships with God as the FATHER (Luke 11:11-13- below:) (KJV)
11 Ifa son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish,
will he for a fish give him a serpent?

12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

13 If
ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your
heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

c. A genuine confidence in the Lord: Psalm 55:16-17 (NASB)

“As for me, I shall call upon God, and the LORD will save me.

Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and

murmur, and He will hear my voice.”

d. An answer to our prayer: Matthew 7:7 (NASB)

“ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock,

and it will be opened to you.”

PRAYER- MAIN POINTS

4. Read Jeremiah 33:3, What does God ask of us? “call to Me.”

5. Read 1 John 5:14-15, What does God promise if we pray according to His will?
If we ask he will give it to us

6. Read Matthew 26:41, What was the command that Jesus gave to his disciples so that they would not enter
into temptation?
He said to them to keep watching and praying until He comes back

RESULTS FROM PRAYER

A. Read Jeremiah 33:3, What two things does God promise if we pray?

1. He will answer you 2. Tell you great things

B. Read Philippians 4:6-7, What does God promise to do if we pray?

Guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus

C. Read Matthew 21:22, What requirement do you find in this verse for God to answer our prayers?
When you are in prayer you must believe that God can do it

FIVE COMMANDS ABOUT PRAYER

1. Keep on the alert at all times (Luke 21:36)

2. Pray so that you do not enter into temptation (Matthew 26:41)

3. Pray for the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers (Luke 10:2)

4. Pray for those who are in authority (1 Timothy 2:1,2)

5. Pray for those who persecute you. (Luke 6:28)

• In the midst of prayer you can learn to worship God for who He is, confess your sins, give thanks for
everything He has done for you. Above all, you can ask and plead for your needs and intercede for
others.
• Prayer is a powerful weapon for every Christian, in the Bible we find many references of people who
prayed in the morning, afternoon and night.
Here’s a good idea: make a list of people to pray for and ask God to do His will
for each one!

The best prayers are (mark the correct answer with an x):

Our Daily Bread
➢ The name “Bible” comes from the Greek Biblión, which means “collection of
books”, “scrolls”. The Bible is a library made up of 66 books. These books were written in different
historical contexts, by 40 authors from different social classes, different education and different
occupations.
➢ The Bible is a canon. The word canon meant a straight cane that was used to measure, a ruler, a model.
The canon of the Bible is the set of books that were accepted by the people of God as inspired and as
the only rule of faith and conduct.
➢ The Bible is the Word of God, we can say that it is God's special book. This book is not like other books
as it is supernatural, it was written by many authors, with different cultural backgrounds, but under the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
➢ The Word of God becomes that food that keeps us full of faith in our spirit. The Word becomes the light
to illuminate our daily walk, it teaches us the right things and how we should live. The Scriptures are
inspired by God to lead us to the right path where we should walk.
1. Divine Inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16 & 17, NASB)

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training, and
righteousness;

rebuke, for correction for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for
every good work.”

Taking the Word of God as daily food will lead you to know and understand what God is like. This will lead you
to have one of the most important relationships that a human being can experience. God is wonderful and His
promises are written in the Bible as a seal of guarantee, if He said it, He will do it. The Word of God contains
God's supreme plan for man, it is also full of promises for anyone who is willing to follow Him and know Him
without limits.

2. What sections does the Bible have?

The Old Testament. (Old Agreement)

The New Testament (New Agreement)

The Old Testament tells us about God's work with His people before the birth of Jesus. In Him we can see the
liberating power of the Lord, His mercy and kindness towards His rebellious and disobedient people. In it you
will find wonders and miracles that God performed in extraordinary ways. God reveals Himself with His great
love to the people chosen by Him. It is also full of history, poetry and prophecies.

The New Testament tells us about the birth of Jesus, His life, His great ministry of healing the sick and
forgiveness of sins for all of us, His death on the cross, and above all, His resurrection from the dead and His

ascension (His return to heaven). The New Testament also leads us to understand the first church, how it grew
and how it was formed.

THE LOVE OF GOD

In the Word of God we find the greatest and most wonderful promise that can be found in the world. This
promise sets free everyone who believes it and is willing to surrender completely to the Lord Jesus.

3. John 3:16, 17 (NASB)

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not
perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the
world might be saved through Him.”

THE PURPOSE OF GOD’S WORD

4. 2 Timothy 3:15 (NASB)

“and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you

wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (Also read: 2 Peter 1:3-4)

5. The Word of God comes to give life to those who insistently search it. John 6:63 (NASB)
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are

spirit and are life.”

6. God’s Words are creative. Psalm 33:6-9 (NASB)

6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,

And by the breath of His mouth all their lights.

7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap;

He puts the depths in storehouses.

8
Let all the earth fear the LORD;
Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood firm.

6. The Word of God cleans you like water John 15:3 (NASB).

“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.”

7. The Word of God will help you clean your path. Psalm 119:9-11 (NASB)
9 “How can a young man keep his way pure?

By keeping it according to Your word.

10
With all my heart have sought You;
Do not let me wander from Your commandments

So that I may not sin against You.”

8. Since you are part of the church you are sanctified and purified with the Word

Ephesians 5:25-27 (NASB).

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so

that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He
might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but
that she would be holy and blameless.”

10. Some Truths of what the Word of God is: Read:

• It is Light and Lamp (Psalms 119:105, 130)
• The Word is prophetic (2 Peter 1:19)
• The Word of God is spiritual food (Matthew 4:4)
• The Word is like a seed (Luke 8:4-15~read verse 11)
• The Word of God is a sword (Ephesians 6:17, Hebrews 4:12) notice how Jesus uses the Word (sword) to
defeat the enemy (Luke 4:1-14)
• The Word helps us to pray (John 15:7)
• The result if we hear the Word and do them (Matthew 7:24-27)

The two foundations ******* Matthew 7:24-27 (NASB)

24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man who
built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed
against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who
hears these words of Mine, and does not [c]act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house
on the sand. 27 And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that
house; and it fell—and its collapse was great.”

Tool #7
The Church

A New Family
Welcome to the New Family in Christ Jesus! You are now part of the Christ’s Church! In the book of Acts you
can see how the first Church advanced, (Acts 2:41-47) they were called to unity, fellowship and mutual
service; therefore, no Christian should persevere alone, on the contrary, they should belong to a congregation
and become a part of the activities as the body of Christ.
The Church is a living organism, therefore, spiritual growth as well as the number of members is important.
Our calling as a church is to be light in the midst of the darkness of this world. You are also called to multiply, in
other words, to share God's love with others. This is God's desire, for no one to perish, but that all come to
repentance, (read John 3:16,17).

1. Acts 2:41-47 (NASB)

41 “Sothen, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about
three thousand souls. 42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to
fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

First Christians’ Life

43 Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the
apostles. 44 Andall the believers were together and had all things in common; 45 and they would sell
their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need. 46 Day
by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were
taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with
all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Being part of the Christ’s Church is an enormous privilege, but also a great responsibility, we are
called to do things that the world does not do, called to live in brother and sisterhood, in unity and
called to share our entire lifestyle with each other.

God created the family so that each individual who is born can have everything they need to develop
healthily; the same happens with people in the church, they have a new life, a new birth, therefore, it is
necessary for the believer to have a family they can count on to feel happy, safe and protected. The
church is also a place of spiritual growth and maturity.

The Church is called the body of Christ and Christ is the head. Therefore, Jesus comes to become the
supreme authority for us Christians, no one can go to the Father if not through Him, as we talked
about in one of the previous lessons, the Holy Spirit has become our Guide and Counselor.

2. The book of Ephesians reveals to us that we are no longer alone and that we now have a
family.

Ephesians 2:19 (NASB)

“So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and
are of God’s household,”

3. As a family and as a body we also have a Head and a Savior. Let's look at the verse below:

Ephesians 5:23 (NASB)

Evangelize the lost ones Teach the Christians Send to make Disciples
22 Basic Tools for Discipleship
“For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the Head of the church, He
Himself being the Savior of the body.”

4. What did Christ do for His Church, according to Ephesians 5:25-27?

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that
He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He
might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but
that she would be holy and blameless.”

5. Read some verses that talk about the Church:

Ephesians 1:20-23 Jesus is the Head of the Church and the Church
is His body

Matthew 16:16-20 In Christ Jesus the Church is built

Romans 12:4-5 We are Members of the Church of Christ

CHURCH RESPONSIBILITIES

6. What did Jesus say we should do after we receive the Holy Spirit? (Acts 1:8)

Be witnesses to all

7. What is my responsibility to help someone who is caught in a wrongdoing, according to Galatians 6:1?

Tell them about how Jesus can restore them and encourage them to do right

8. What do I have to do as a member of God's family? (Galatians 6:2)

Carry one another’s burdens for each other

9. Who should I especially bless, being part of Christ’s Church? (Galatians 6:10)

Bless especially the people of our church

10. In Hebrews 10:24-25, God requires us to do several things. Mention some of them:

Evangelize the lost ones Teach the Christians Send to make Disciples

Stimulate one another, love one another, and do good deeds.

11. As a member of the Christ’s church how should I help it?

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly
or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Galatians 6:10 (NIV)

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those
who belong to the family of believers.”

Tool #8
Telling others how amazing God is
Giving my testimony to others, which is telling others what God has done in you is to show how your life has
been impacted by the power of God. God’s plan is that no one soul be lost but that all might have the
opportunity to be saved. One of the best ways to share the Gospel is by sharing your testimony. What is my
testimony?

Everything that has happened in your life, from the moment that you were born and decided to become the
Lord Jesus’ disciple, are spiritual experiences that changed your life forever.

The word gospel in the original Greek is Good News or good news of Jesus. So, when we talk to others about
how amazing Jesus is, we are testifying about him and sharing the gospel of salvation (good news).
2. Another way to testify of Jesus is with our actions and lifestyle, that what we call giving a good example.
John 3:32-34 (NASB)
“What He has seen and heard, of this He testifies; and no one accepts His testimony. The one who has accepted His
testimony has certified that God is true. For He whom God sent speaks the words of God; for He does not give the Spirit
sparingly.”
Christ’s church needs to see the need to evangelize or testify of Jesus. It’s a commandment given by Jesus. The
key to the Gospel message is that no one is lost. We need to help people receive Jesus as their personal Savior,
that’s the beginning of a journey of the Christian race.

3.Matthew 28:19-20 ()NASB)

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son
and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to
the end of the age.”

4.Look what Andrew said:

John 1:40-41 (NASB)

Evangelize the lost ones Teach the Christians Send to make Disciples
25 Basic Tools for Discipleship
“One of the two who heard John speak, and speak Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his
own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ).”

5.Read these verses and respond:

John 15:16 Why did Jesus choose you?

So I could go bear fruit for Him.

John 15:27 What do I have to tell? About Him Why?

Because we have been with Him.

Mateo 4:19 What will Jesus make us?

Fishers of people.

What did Jesus order the man from whom the demons had come out to do in Lucas 8:39?

Told others what Jesus had done for Him.

6.It’s so important that we take the truth to the people because if we don’t they will be lost.
Look at ONLY two choices:
What do we see that many choose in Matthew 7:13-14?
Broad Way leads to destruction Narrow Way leads to life
7. How should you be always according to 1 Peter 3:15? Always be ready for anyone who asks.

8. Isaiah 6:8
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am
I. Send me!”
What God wants is for you to be willing to go and take this message that will change the course of life for many; it’s not
an option, it’s a commandment. So, I should obey God and start to share the love of God with others. Who are these
“others”? My family, people at work, at school or with my friends, etc.

Tool #9
Stewardship
Sowing to Reap
Evangelize the lost ones Teach the Christians Send to make Disciples
26 Basic Tools for Discipleship

When we talk about stewardship we’re not just talking about money, but also about my time, my talents, my
effort and everything I do in my daily life. God has given me everything I have and everything I am, therefore, I
decide to love Him with all my heart and my desire is to serve Him, thank Him and share everything I am and
everything I have with Him and with His work.

1. Giving to the needy Acts 6:1-3 (NASB)

Now at this time, as the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint developed on the part
of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked
in the daily serving of food. 2 So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, “It
is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. 3 Instead, brothers and
sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the spirit and of spirit, whom
we may put in charge of this task.

In this verse we can see there is a need in the church to have people who like to serve and dedicate time to the
work of the Lord to help those in need both within the church and outside the church too. We also see the
need to share what God has given us, we see people in need like widows and money was needed to help them.
Supporting the needy in our Christian community is a responsibility, this is part of being able to understand
that we are stewards of what God gives us.

An Example of Reaping and Sowing

2. Honor the Lord Proverbs 3:9-10 (NASB)

9 Honor the LORD from your wealth,

And from the first of all your produce;
10 Then your barns will be filled with plenty,

And your vats will overflow with new wine.

God is looking for only one thing… that everything I do pleases Him, in our normal walk of life we will meet
people in need and if we learn to be good stewards of what God gives us, we will do everything possible to
help them in whatever is necessary, within our reach, taking into account that I should not give of what I have
left over.
The secret of the blessing of giving is in the attitude of my heart, with what intention I give and share
everything that God has given me.

3. Everything I do is to please the Lord

1 Corinthians 10:31 (NASB)

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all things for the glory of God.”

finances or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God

God wants you to understand His Word and to put it into practice, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy
good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well” (3 John 1:2) We are co-
laborers with God, for this reason we need to understand our role in the Kingdom of God and our
responsibilities.

5. Co-laborers

1 Corinthians 3:9 (NASB)

For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.
Christ’s church is supported by tithes and offerings and with each contribution we can achieve everything that
is budgeted each year. We believe that God has given us specific instructions for our finances. Our greatest
wish is that you can join as a collaborator of the kingdom of God, if you already do, that is great! That shows
that you have learned the principles of stewardship by giving to God what belongs to Him.
Psalm 24:1 (NASB)
“The earth is the LORD’S, and all it contains,
The world, and those who live in it.”

Malachi 3:10 (NASB)

6. My commitment and my decision

Through learning this principle of stewardship I have understood the importance of having a generous heart,
both towards the Lord's Church and also towards others in need. Today I commit to living a generous life by
giving ten percent of my gross income to the work of the Lord. I will help others by giving my public testimony
by doing so with great joy and joy because I know that the Lord loves a cheerful giver.

Why is it important to be baptized?

I. Why do I need to get baptized?

1. To follow the example given by Jesus

2. Because Jesus did it.

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the
Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you
always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NASB)

II. What is the meaning of baptism?

1. it’s an illustration of the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“Having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the
working of God, who raised Him from the dead.” Colossians 2:12 (NASB)

2. It is an illustration of my new life as a Christian.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new
things have come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NASB)

“Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ
was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.”
Romans 6:4 (NASB)

Baptism does not make you a believer––It is a symbol that you are already a believer.

Baptism does not save you––Only your faith in Jesus Christ does that.

Baptism is like a wedding ring––It is a symbol outside of the commitment you have made in your heart.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of
works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NASB)

III. Who should be baptized?

1. Every person that has believed and accepted Christ.

“So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about
three thousand souls.” Acts 2:41(NASB)

IV. When do I need to be baptized? As soon as you believe. There’s no reason to wait.
When you have decided to accept Christ in your life, you can and you should be baptized.

What is the meaning of the Lord’s Supper?

Jesus never asked his disciples to remember his birth. But he did instruct them to remember his death
and resurrection. He gave the church two visible symbols and we call them sacraments, as reminders
of his death. These two sacraments are: Baptism and The Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper is an
illustration that represents great spiritual truths for believers.

1. It is a reminder - So we do not forget.

“and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance
of Me.” I Corinthians 11:24
2. It is a symbol.
“In the same way He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this,
as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” (vs. 25)
3. It’s a declaration of faith.
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” (vs. 25)
4. It’s a celebration of the wedding feast of the Lamb that is to come.
“Now when one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, “Blessed is
everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” Luke 14:15

Using my gift in service for others (The Church)

Spiritual Gifts:

Spiritual Gifts are gifts and abilities that God supernaturally places in my life the day I begin a relationship with
Him. From the day of your conversion you were sealed with the Holy Spirit and given supernatural abilities to
help in the edification of others.

Skills:

Skills are demonstrated when one can easily carry out the steps of an activity. Skills can be learned and
developed naturally. However, here we are NOT talking about some natural ability, such as human talents.
Here we are talking about abilities given by God when we become His child. See talents next:

Talents:

Talents exist naturally within you and cannot be acquired. They are your innate predispositions. They are the
things you do instinctively and that naturally give you satisfaction. Talents are made manifest by your
spontaneous and improvised reactions to situations you encounter in your daily life.

Spiritual gifts are vital to the development and growth of believers who make up the Christ’s church. Together
we will discover the gifts that God gave us. Let's remember, they are not my natural abilities, these gifts are a
gift to the church that He bought at the price of His Blood.

Spiritual gifts are discovered and developed as each person allows the Holy Spirit to work within. The more we
seek the Lord in word and prayer, the more we will discover our gifts.
Some truths concerning spiritual gifts:

Getting to know the pastor’s family
We live in a very changing world, our culture is different from the years past.
Before, a fashion or trend changed every 10 years, now everything changes much faster, our children
are influenced by technology in a way that is difficult to control. However, one thing that should never
change are the values in the home.

It is necessary to emphasize that pastors are human people, they have needs like any member of the
congregation. Their children are not perfect, they have the same challenges as other children their
age, because they are pastors’ kids, they should not behave differently as if they had a halo on their
head. Pastors make every effort to educate their family and their church in the best way. Words from
the Pastor: “my first ministry is my family it is the first ministry to which I have to give an account to
the Lord.”

This is what the Word of God has to say about the pastor’s life, how they should live, their character
and their calling.

1 Timothy 3:1-7 (NASB)

“It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to
do. 2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, self-
controlled, respectable, hospitable, skillful in teaching, 3 not overindulging in wine, not a bully, but
gentle, not contentious, free from the love of money. 4 He must be one who manage his own
household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5 (but if a man does not know how
to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), 6 and not a new convert,
so that he will not become conceited and fall into condemnation incurred by the devil. 7 And he
must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into disgrace
and the snare of the devil.”

Regarding the family, God's design for the family is this:

• There must be a head that exercises authority, but in love, with respect and valuing the family.
• He has to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. The wife also has
to submit to her husband and respect him.
• There must be harmony with the children, educating them, teaching them the Word and
correcting them.
We must learn a lot from the pastoral family; Remember that the pastor has authority over his
children until they come of age. Pastors want their children to follow the path that was taught to them
as children. We want to remind you that a pastoral family is a normal human family like all those in

Evangelize the lost ones Teach the Christians Send to make Disciples

society. What makes our family different is the call given by God to the father or mother of the family.

Spiritual Attacks
Since we are in a fallen world, we will always run into people we don't like us even if they don’t know
us. It is difficult to shepherd when there are so many people looking at the pastoral family. One can
be a channel of blessing to their spiritual leaders or one can be a continuous burden. The truth is that
you decide what you want to be.
The enemy uses many methods to bring down the pastoral family and some of his methods are to
create confusion in the congregations, and also to create divisions and conflicts between the church
family and the pastor. In these areas mature leaders have to listen to the conflict and determine who
the attack is coming from.

Unfortunately, in many years of pastoring, we have observed leaders who have been unable to resolve
conflict because of immaturity, therefore the results have been devastating: destroyed marriages, and
people who no longer want anything to do with God and even the church was almost closed. I thank
those who have trusted their pastors and helped them move forward. This is written so that you as a
leader or disciple of Jesus Christ can see the reality in which many pastors live, the matter is serious.

John 10:10 (NASB)

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life,
and have it abundantly.”

The normal family

The pastoral family does not have to be different from others in the community. We repeat, we do not
belittle the Lord's call for the pastor, but we do emphasize the importance of seeing his family as
having basic needs like a normal family. They need a house, a car, money, food, clothing and many
other things.
The pastor may arrive late just like other people, he or she can get sick too and that is normal as
human beings. The pastor needs to take care of his family and dedicate time to them in the
afternoons, on Saturdays and on days when he can.

The pastor's job is not easy. If it were easy, anyone would do it. Statistics say that there are thousands
of pastors every year who abandon their calling. The pastoral family needs understanding, sometimes
they feel like they are alone. Have you thought about whether your pastor ever feels lonely, tired, or
depressed? His or her needs are many and he/she suffers them alone.

Valuing the Pastor’s Dedication

The pastor or spiritual leader needs someone to help him or her, the pastoral work requires many
hands, to achieve a great impact in the community. Sometimes the pastoral family gets tired and
needs their leaders to help them by supporting them in the heavy tasks, encouraging them, calling
them, honoring them, praying for them and showing them that they are important to the church.
Acts of affection and love are important for the servants of God and their family. Sometimes it is not
just the pastor who serves in the church, it is also many times the entire family that is involved in

serving and helping in the work of God. That is worthy of imitation and admiration.

Let’s look at these verses:

Exodus 17:11-13 (NASB)
11 So it came about, when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed; but when he let his

hand down, Amalek prevailed. 12 And Moses’ hands were heavy. So they took a stone and put it
under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on
the other. So his hands were steady until the sun set. 13 And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people
with the edge of the sword.

This is for real! When the leader is tired, who helps him move forward? Note that God did not appear
here in the flesh, here, the servants of the servant of God helped him and that is what God is looking
for…men and women to help and strengthen the pastoral family. They are human beings who also
suffer, get tired, become discouraged and have problems both in marriage and in raising their
children. They need you to be able to continue walking. When the leader is well, the body is too, it is
necessary to know what the needs of his pastors are and help them “raise their arms” in those areas.
And the reward is not for the pastors only, the reward is also for the people.

The pastor's wife:

(Here is a special note from the wife of the author of this discipleship tool kit)
Sarah Rodríguez, pastor's wife since 2006: “One of the things I have learned in the last 18 years of
being a pastor's wife is submission. It is very important to be submissive to my husband because the
example of obeying authority is shown to the entire church. If there are times when I don't agree with
a ministry plan or some detail of the church, it is very important to talk about it with my husband in
an appeal, and not in front of everyone. Being the support for my husband is very important. When
the children were little, there were times when I was left home alone with them while he was making
pastoral visits. Or, sometimes, we had to take the children to ministry settings. In all these moments, it
is important to have a good attitude, an attitude of adventure, that we are serving the Kingdom
together as a family and that we will see the results in heaven, and also some here on earth. One of
the most beautiful results I have seen in serving as a pastor's wife is the love the congregation has for
me. It is a unique and beautiful role that I have and it is a gift from God to be a pastor's wife.”

We, the pastors of Avivamiento Latino Church, have decided to love you, help you, pray for you
and do everything in our power so that you and your family can experience God in a wonderful
way. We are with you in this race that the Lord gave us so that we could run together, God bless
you very much.

You can make any changes you want as long as you don't change the purpose and name of the tool.
This manual was written to instruct new believers in a basic way and in order to have knowledge of
the word of God. The desire and commitment is to fulfill the Great Commission we read in Matthew
28:19-20. This was given as a command by the Lord Jesus to the entire church.

“I recommend these Basic Tools for Discipleship to every person, child, youth or adult, who comes to a
weekly Bible study. It gives the necessary foundations for a believer to know how they should use
their gifts, their finances, and know the sacraments and steps of faith that each believer has to take.
The Scripture passages applied in this Manual plant seeds that will bear eternal fruit.”~ Rev. Sarah E.
Rodríguez
