Chapter 1
Introduction to the Study
Chapter 1 is made up of five parts, namely: (1) Background of the Study, (2)
Statement of the Problem, (3) Significance of the Study, (4) Definition of Terms, and (5)
Delimitation of the study.
Part One, Background of the Study, presents the introduction, discusses the
rationale for conducting the investigation and presents the theoretical framework, which
serves as the study’s frame of reference.
Part Two, Statement of the Problem, gives the main problem and the specific
questions the study seeks for and answer.
Part Three, Significance of the Study, provides explanations on what benefit each
stakeholder will have on the research results.
Part Four, Definition of Terms, gives the meaning of the important terms used in
the study conceptually and operationally.
Part Five, Delimitation of the Study, sets the scope of the research design,
participants, sample size and sampling procedures, locale, data-gathering instruments,
and statistical tools employed in the analysis of the data.
Background of the Study
Education is a system of growth and opportunities. This institution serves as a
playground of development and mental improvement especially among students. As a
fundamental source of knowledge, education requires reading comprehension enable to
2
understand and acquire information effectively. This suggest that enable to absorbed
knowledge, an individual must consider to improve their reading comprehension enable
to grasp ideas in mind. According to Veeravagu, et.al (2010), reading comprehension is
defined as “a thinking process by which a reader selects facts, information, or ideas
from printed materials; determines the meanings the author intended to transmit;
decides how they relate to previous knowledge; and judges their appropriateness and
worth for meeting the reader’s own objectives”.
There are some factors that contribute in achieving reading comprehension,
such as students’ motivation, vocabulary knowledge, prior knowledge, curiosity and
many more (Gilakjani & Sabouri, 2016, p.180). From the factors mentioned, curiosity is
the driving force that will direct individuals to willingly provide their utmost best enable
to comprehend the text or topic. Consequently, they will acquire significant amount of
knowledge due to their curiosity or inquisitiveness to learn, also called learning
inquisitiveness.
Learning inquisitiveness is the strong desire to learn and gain knowledge driven
by natural curiosity and eagerness . This curiosity that drives student to engage and
develop an interest in a particular subject further enhances their reading
comprehension capabilities and learning capacity. Specifically, it aims to enhance one's
focus and eagerness while understanding a particular subject. Suggesting that, this
qualities can amplify a students reading comprehension with their desire to learn it.
This relationship between learning inquisitiveness and reading comprehension
are interconnected. Whereas it significantly impacts students in regards with their
3
academic performance. Thus, the researchers felt the need to determine the influence
of learning inquisitiveness and reading comprehension to grade 11 student's academic
performance. As a result, this study will serve as a guidelines of students especially to
Grade 11 as it helps to understand the idea on what, why and how does learning
inquisitiveness and reading comprehension affects their academic performance and
how it correlates with one variable to another.
Statement of the Problem
The study aimed to determine the influence of learning inquisitiveness and reading
Comprehension to Grade 11 Student's academic performance.
1. What is the influence of learning inquisitiveness and reading comprehension to grade
11 student's academic performance?
2. How does learning inquisitiveness and reading comprehension influence Grade 11
Student's Academic Performance?
3. Why does learning inquisitiveness and reading comprehension influence the Grade 11
student's academic performance?
Significance of the Study
The results of this study may be beneficial to the students, teachers, school and
future researchers. It will serve for them as a source of knowledge and guidance in
understanding the influence of learning Inquisitiveness and reading comprehension of
grade 11 student's academic performance.
4
STUDENTS. This study has a big significance especially to the students because it helps
them to understand the influence of factors such as what, why and how learning
inquisitiveness and reading comprehension to grade 11 student's academic
performance. This study can help developing a student's desire to learn, focus and their
ability to understand the meaning of a written text through reading that can provide a
positive outcome in terms of their academic performance.
PARENTS. This study has a big significance also on the part of parents, This can also help
their children to have greater reading comprehension, learning curiosity and acquire
information than those who do not. They will understand the ideas of what are the
factors that affects their academic performance and how or why learning inquisitiveness
and reading comprehension contributes to students academic performance.
Consequently, their children will become aware, informed and knowledgeable about the
relationship of this factors which possibly allow them to score higher on achievement
tests in various subject areas, and have greater learning inquisitiveness than other
students.
TEACHERS. This study has a big significance also on the part of teachers. The study can
be a pathway to the management of the teachers. Teachers will understand why
students participation during classes are affected by their learning inquisitiveness and
reading comprehension and how it affects their academic performance. Therefore, they
might employ better learning activities to increase the engagement of students and
enhance their learning comprehension during discussions.
5
SCHOOL. This study has a big significance also on the part of Schools. Reading
comprehension and learning inquisitiveness is crucial for students' success in school,
requiring various techniques and abilities. Engaging in learning is essential for
comprehension, which impacts academic performance. Teaching students to
understand, comprehend, and be informed about this relationship is crucial for high
academic achievements and also for developing well-informed learners inside the
institution's premises.
FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This study has a big significance also on the part of future
researchers. The topic is also significance to the future researchers to gather relevant
information. The main objective of this study is to determine the influence of their
reading comprehension and learning inquisitiveness enable to activate and reinforce the
understanding, comprehension and the idea of its relationship to grade 11 student's
academic performance.
Definition of Terms
For better understanding, these terms were define conceptually and operationally.

the 10% population of Grade 11 Curriculumn of Malonoy National High School,
Malonoy, Dao, Capiz for school year 2024-2025 that will be selected through random
sampling.
A researcher made interview questionnaire was utilized to gather the
needed information.
