ROCK EXTENSOMETER-Vertical & Lateral
For Poisson’s Ration/Youngs Modulus of Soft to Hard Rock
Introduction
Young’s Modulus or Elastic Modulus or Tensile Modulus, is a measure of mechanical property of
linear elastic solids like cylinder, cube etc. There are other numbers which give us a measure of elastic
properties of a material, like Bulk modulus and shear modulus, but the value of Young’s Modulus is most
commonly used. This is because it gives us information about the tensile elasticity of a material i.e. ability to
deform along an axis.
Young’s modulus describes the relationship between stress (force per unit area) and strain (proportional
deformation in an object).
Poisson's ratio is the ratio of the relative contraction strain (transverse, lateral or radial strain) normal to the
applied load - to the relative extension strain (or axial strain) in the direction of the applied load. In this
attachment vertical as well as lateral strains.
Basic Test Attachment consists of a rigid frame having 4 strain sensors, 2 for vertical and 2 for horizontal
movement. Another pressure sensor is provided, to be connected to your compression device, measuring
pressure and displaying load in kN (ram area required). Fixing of the attachment / frame is very easy and
done by rotating clamping knobs. Simply placing the sample into frame and clamping by knob makes it ready
to test. All sensors are spring return, reusable, 0-10V output.
