Water Pollution Scenario Assignment
OH NO! There has been an incidence of water pollution! Water quality has been
tested in several areas and it seems that some form of pollution has been found in
the water source. Read the scenario below.
In Northeast ohio, there has been an increase in crop production.
Farmers have been very happy with the size and amount of crops
they have been growing. They attribute their success to the great
soil and the fact that they have been able to keep the bugs from
eating the crops. Unfortunately, while the crop production has
increased water quality of the Cuyahoga River and Chagrin Rivers
has decreased.
It is your job to determine:
1. What is the pollutant?
2. Where the pollution is coming from/What is the source?
3. What path did the pollutant take to get into the water?
a. Mention if it goes through surface water (runoff) or groundwater
4. Is it point source/non-point source pollution?
5. What can be done to fix or improve the problem?
Create a google slide presentation that answers the questions above. You and your
group will present the information to the class

This past spring, water quality analysts noticed that the living
things such as fish, frogs, and crayfish in the Ohio River were
starting to die off in the Ohio River. When they tested the water,
it had a pH of 5.

Water was tested at the well near the river. The water
quality report showed traces of pollution in the water. Which
factory do you think was responsible for the pollution?

Near the Waste Management Landfill, houses were experiencing a
strange taste to their water. When water quality analysts came
out to test the water, they determined that there were toxins
(TCE) in their water. Landfills are usually near large bodies of
freshwater or in swamps. TCE is a carcinogen found in landfill
drainage and it would take less than 4 drops of TCE mixed with
the water in an average swimming pool to render the water
undrinkable. Some surveys conducted have shown that 82% of the
landfills have leaks and up to 41% of the landfills had a leak area
of more than one square foot.
