Wintertide Cable Hat
This classic hat uses a special stitch to avoid the holes that often happen as cables cross each
other. Cables are worked on a background of smooth extended single crochet which keeps the
cables upright and allows for drape and stretch.
Size
Small (Large)
Finished Meaurements
16 (20)” in circumference, and 8 (9.5)” tall.
Materials
• 160 (195) yards of worsted weight yarn
• Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
• Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
• Removeable stitch markers
• Yarn needle
• Purchased pompom
Gauge
18 sts and 13 rows = 4” in hdc blo patt.
1 repeat of cable pattern = 2” wide by 1.5” tall.
OR: Work Ribbing directions through Row 13. Piece measures 1.75” X 4”.
Once hook size for ribbing is determined, continue with pattern switching to a hook that is 2 sizes
larger, and continue to monitor gauge as work progresses. Keep in mind, that the Cable Section of
hat will slightly stretch out the Ribbing as it is worked.
Notes
• Pattern is written for Size Small, with Size Large instructions in parentheses ( ), when
applicable.
• Ribbing is made sideways in vertical, turned rows, then slip stitched to form a tube.
• Cabled section of hat is worked in the round from the top edge of ribbing, up.
• Turning chains do not count as a stitch.

Special Stitches
FPdc/esc dec: FPdc around next post holding back last yo, esc in following st holding back last
yo, yo and pull through all 3 loops left on hook. Step by step directions: yo, insert hook from front
to back to front around next post st, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through next 2 loops on hook,
insert hook into next st, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through only one loop, yo and pull through
rem 3 loops. This decreases stitch count by one stitch.
FPdc2tog: *Yo, insert hook from front to back to front around next post, yo and pull up loop, yo and
pull through 2 loops on hook, rep from *once more working around the following post, yo and pull
through all 3 loops on hook. This decreases stitch count by one stitch.
Anchoring Stitches
These sts are referred to as anchoring sts because they “anchor” the long crossing post sts to the
round directly below. These sts fill in the gap that is normally made when cable sts cross over each
other.
Esc/FPtr dec: esc into next st holding back last yo, FPtr around indicated post holding back last yo,
yo and pull through all 3 loops left on hook. Step by step directions: insert hook in next st, yo and
pull up loop, yo and pull through only one loop, yo 2 times, insert hook from front-to-back-to-front
around indicated post st, yo and pull up loop, [yo and pull loop through next 2 loops on hook] twice,
yo and pull through rem 3 loops. This does not increase or decrease stitch count in this pattern.
FPtr/esc dec: FPtr around next post holding back last yo, esc in indicated st holding back last yo,
yo and pull through all 3 loops left on hook. Step by step directions: yo twice, insert hook from front
to back to front around next post st, yo and pull up loop, [yo and pull through next 2 loops on hook]
twice, insert hook into indicated st, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through only one loop, yo and
pull through rem 3 loops. This does not increase or decrease stitch count in this pattern.
