Abstract

Trained on data until October 2023. Chess, a game of intricate strategy with a history of over
1,500 years, has united people of different cultures and generations, making it one of the most popular
and respected games of the planet.

The study explores the myriad benefits chess offers, including enhanced critical-thinking skills
and problem-solving abilities, as well as resilience, creativity and discipline. Chess can teach
life skills, like knowing how to graciously accept winning or losing, what your decisions may
produce, and remaining laser-focused in stressful situations. For kids, it’s not merely a game
— it’s a way to elevate their performance in school and build patience and strategic thinking
in a fun environment.

Chess will also connect people in ways that go past individual improvement. Be it through
informal contests, virtual games, or global competitions; chess generates avenues to forge
friendship and enhance networks. Personal stories and insights from both players and educators
emphasize how chess sparks curiosity, promotes lifelong learning and builds community.

This research proves that chess is not only a game—it can be used as a tool for sharpening your
mind, reigniting relationships, and solving challenges on and off the board.

v
Introduction

The reason I chose this title (Chess: The Influence of Chess among People) because I
am attracted to chess. Many people don’t like chess because its hard and too complicated, I
agree with them, but I believe there is a reason to that. Why its globalize? Why its so
popular?, I did this research because of my curiosity and my end school project, and its relate
to the events that has happen. Many People especially Child play too many online games.

Chess is an uniqe strategy game with various combination and coordination, Because that
many variation, the game become more variative so we didn’t bored to play. Beside that chess
is one of the most popular board game in the world. Millions of people play Chess for recreation
or competitive means. Strategy is the most attractiveness for players. In facts, that’s what makes
chess is the most known board games. As quoted by RaphKoster, “we play games and enjoy
the process because we try to master the patterns in the game. When mastering the pattern,
players will also be happy.” That’s maybe the reason people love and attracted to chess.

The first time I play chess is when I was in Primary five. One of my friend taught me
how to play it. From then, I always play when I have free time. I also watched video about
chess, from tactics, openings, counter-attacks, etc. My biggest rivals are Mr yadi and Aufar.

People also play chess because of the influence of other people. Such as my case, my
friend taught me and my teacher like it too. I become influenced and don’t want to left behind.
So that’s why I chose this title.

Chess is a timeless intellectual pursuit that has captivated minds across generations and
cultures. Originating over a thousand years ago, chess has evolved into a globally recognized
game that is not only played for recreation but also studied for its strategic depth and cognitive
benefits. Its influence extends beyond the board, impacting education, psychology, and even
social interactions. Many studies suggest that playing chess enhances critical thinking, problem-
solving skills, and decision-making abilities, making it a valuable tool for personal and
intellectual development. This paper explores the profound influence of chess on individuals
and society, examining its role in shaping cognitive abilities, social relationships, and cultural
significance.

As a chess player namely IMKeto from chess.com forum say “The amount of material
has nothing to do with the final score of a game. Its not how much material you have. Its what
you do with the material you do have.”

A chess game is won in the following manners:

1. Checkmate
2. Resignation
3. Forfeit
4. Time

Subject Matter and Process

1
Chess is a strategy game with no hidden information or elements of chance. It’s played
on a chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. Each player controls 16 pieces: one
king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. White moves first,
followed by Black, and then they alternate turns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the
opponent's king, meaning it’s under attack and cannot escape capture. There are also several
ways the game can end in a draw.

The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent, which happens when their king is in
check and there’s no legal move to escape it. It’s never allowed for a player to make a move
that puts or leaves their own king in check. In casual games, players often announce "check"
when they threaten the opponent’s king, but this is not required by the rules and is generally not
done in tournaments.

Organized chess as we know it today began to take shape in the 19th century. International
chess competitions are now governed by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs, or the
International Chess Federation). The first officially recognized World Chess Champion,
Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886. As of the time this article was written, Ding Liren
is the current World Champion.

The recorded history of chess dates back at least to the 7th century, with the emergence
of a similar game called Chaturanga in India. After being introduced to Persia, it spread to the
Arab world and eventually to Europe. The modern rules of chess began to take shape in Europe
in the late 15th century, and by the end of the 19th century, they were standardized and
universally accepted. Today, chess is one of the world’s most popular games, with millions of
players around the globe.

Chess ranking are divided into several rank depending on their ELO and their attendance
in global and official tournament. The Elo ranking system is used to calculate the relative skill
levels of players in zero-sum games like chess and Go. While "Elo" is often written in all caps
(ELO), it's not an acronym. The system is named after its creator, Árpád Elo, a Hungarian-born
American physicist. Ranks in Chess: GM (Grandmaster), IM (Internationals Master), FM
(FIDE Master), and CM (Candidate Master). If the player are girls the titles are: WGM (Woman
Grandmaster), WIM (Women Internationals Master), WFM (Woman FIDE Master), and WCM
(Woman Candidate Master). Top players by November 2024:

Men:

A. Benefits of Playing Chess

1. Chess Brings People Together

Chess is one of the oldest games in the world, with a history spanning over 1,500 years. As it
spread across the globe, the game evolved into the version we play today. This journey has
brought people together from diverse cultures, ages, and backgrounds, united by a shared
passion for the game.

2. Chess Teaches You How To Win And Lose

Of course, everyone enjoys winning, but it’s just as important to learn how to accept losing. As
the saying goes, sometimes you give the lesson, and sometimes you receive it! The key is to
learn from your losses and come back a stronger player. Just like in life, we need to get back
up after failure and return wiser and more determined. Winning with grace is also an important
lesson chess can teach us.

3. Chess Helps Children Realize The Consequence Of Their Actions

The rise of scholastic chess around the world has been steadily increasing over the past decade.
More important than children becoming great chess players or achieving high ratings is the
lesson chess teaches them from an early age: that their choices have consequences—both good
and bad. Taking the time to think through their moves and aim for the best choice is rewarding,
while rushing decisions and playing too quickly can lead to negative outcomes.

4. Chess Helps You Focus

As Bobby Fischer (one of the greatest chess players) once said, "Chess demands total
concentration." A player can make grandmaster-level moves for 30 turns, only to get distracted
on move 31 and make a simple blunder that costs them the game! This level of focus is valuable
in everyday life, especially when tackling school assignments, daily tasks, and deadlines.

5. Chess Is A Great Educational Tool For Schools

Before, during, and after-school programs are incredibly popular, and for good reason. Chess
is a low-cost activity that children can easily get involved with right at their own school. Kids
of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can take part in a chess class or club.

The variety of possibility in chess make people more curious about Chess, so they want to learn
more about chess so that they can win and beat others. The curiosity of people about Chess
make them develop characters such as:

a. Paitence
b. Resilience
c. Critical Thinking And Problem Solving

Those characters will apply slowly if we play consistent and took it seriously. If the player
applied those character in their daily life, they will become a good person in society.
