THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES

Course: CVNG3007/2012 Environmental Engineering 1

Incourse Test 1

Date and Time: 9:00 am, 28th March 2024 Duration: 75 Minutes

This examination is worth 10% of the total marks for the course.
This paper has Three (3) Questions on TWO (2) Pages
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES (Please read carefully and follow each instruction)
1. Answer ALL Questions
2. Graph paper is provided.

Question 1 (50%)

A settling column analysis is run on a Type I suspension for determining the expected
removals in a sedimentation basin. The settling column is 2 m tall, and the initial
concentration of the well-mixed sample is 550 mg/L. Results of the analysis are shown below
in Table 1.

Table 1

Time (min) 0 58 77 91 114 154 250

Concentration
550 474 385 286 162 94 44
(mg/L)

The basin, which is for treating a daily flow of 11665 m3, has a width of 8 metres and an L:W
ratio of 5.625 : 1.
a. Determine the overflow rate of the basin. [5 marks]
b. Plot the curve of weight fraction of particle remaining versus settling velocity. [20 marks]
c. Using the curve, find the theoretical removal efficiency that can be achieved in the
sedimentation basin. [25 marks]

Question 2 (15 marks)

The concentration of a particular reactant is reduced from an initial concentration, 𝐶𝐶0 , of

200 mg/L to a final concentration, 𝐶𝐶𝑒𝑒 , of 15 mg/L as the liquid flow containing the reactant
passes through two identical completely-stirred tank reactors (CSTR) connected in series. If
the reaction in the reactor follows first‐order kinetics and the liquid flow rate is 0.025
million litres per day (MLD), what is the volume of each reactor?
Assume that the reaction rate constant has a value of 0.4 d‐1.
Recall that the fraction removal achieved in one CSTR, with a mean hydraulic retention
𝐶𝐶𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 1
time, t, is given as: =
𝐶𝐶𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 1+𝐾𝐾𝐾𝐾

Question 3 (10 marks)

Convert the following from mg/L as the ion or compound to mg/L as CaCO3:
a. 200.00 mg/L HCl; [3 marks]
b. 280.00 mg/L CaO; [3 marks]
c. 85.05 mg/L 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶(𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻3)2 [4 marks]

Recall that: H = 1; C = 12; O = 16; Cl = 35.5; Ca = 40.
