Everyday life today is much more complicated than in the past. Even in our leisure time we have to
make so much choices about what to do or even what to watch on TV. We are often spoilt for choice and this
can leave us to feel confused and dissatisfied. We all know that it is important to achieve a balance between
work but play, and many of us do not succeed. Instead, we put extra pressure on ourselves try to be as
successful as in our work life as in our personal life.
Life in the past was much simpler as many people worked to meet their basic needs. Today, for many
of us, our job is not just a way of doing a living. For many, work is an important role in our everyday life and
gives us a strong sense of personal fulfillment. What's more, we have become much more materialistically.
Many people set themselves goals as buying a new house or car and so we measure our success by the
material things we own. Desiring these luxuries is that motivates us to work much harder than in the past, so
in many ways we choose this way of life.

Section 3. Read the following passage and choose the best option marked A, B, C or D to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
The human criterion for perfect vision is 20/20 for reading the standard lines on a Snellen eye chart
without a hitch. The score is determined by how well you read lines of letters of different sizes from 20 feet
away. But being able to read the bottom line on the eye chart does not approximate perfection as far as other
species are concerned. Most birds would consider us very visually handicapped. The hawk, for instance, has
such sharp eyes that it can spot a dime on the sidewalk while perched on top of the Empire State Building. It
can make fine visual distinctions because it is blessed with one million cones per square millimeter in its
6
retina. And in water, humans are farsighted, while the kingfisher, swooping down to spear fish, can see well
in both the air and water because it is endowed with two foveae - areas of the eye consisting mostly of cones
- that provide visual distinctions. One foveae permits the bird, while in the air, to scan the water below with
one eye at a time. This is called monocular vision. Once it hits the water, the other fovea joins in, allowing
the kingfisher to focus both eyes, like binoculars, on its prey at the same time. A frog's vision is
distinguished by its ability to perceive things as a constant motion picture. Known as "bug detectors", a
highly developed set of cells in a frog's eyes responds mainly to moving objects. So, it is said that a frog
sitting in a field of dead bugs wouldn't see them as food and would starve.
The bee has a "compound" eye, which is used for navigation. It has 15,000 facets that divide what it
sees into a pattern of dots, or mosaic. With this kind of vision, the bee sees the sun only as a single dot, a
constant point of reference. Thus, the eye is a superb navigational instrument that constantly measures the
angle of its line of flight in relation to the sun. A bee's eye also gauges flight speed. And if that is not enough
to leave our 20/20 "perfect vision" paling into insignificance, the bee is capable of seeing something we
can't - ultraviolet light. Thus, what humans consider to be "perfect vision" is in fact rather limited when we
look at other species. However, there is still much to be said for the human eye. Of all the mammals, only
humans and some primates can enjoy the pleasures of color vision.
1. What does the passage mainly discuss?

4. According to the passage, why might birds and animals consider humans very visually handicapped?
A. humans can't see very well in either air or water
B. human eyes are not as well suited to our needs
C. the main outstanding feature of human eyes is color vision
D. human eyes can't do what their eyes can do
5. The word "that" in paragraph 1 refers to _______________.
A. foveae B. areas of the eye C. ones D. visual distinctions
6. The phrase "blessed with" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _______________.
A. parted with B. supplied for C. endowed with D. ruled out

A. kingfishers have monocular vision
7
B. The facets in a bee's "compound" eye enable it to see patterns of dots or mosaic.
C. hawks eyes consist mostly of cones that can allow it to scan with one eye at a time
D. humans are farsighted in water
8. Where in the passage does the author discuss that eyes are useful for avoiding starvation?
A. lines 1-5 B. lines 7-10 C. lines 12-15 D. lines 21-24
9. The phrase "paling into insignificance" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _______________.
A. fading away B. of great importance
C. without colored light D. being reduced to little importance

A. eyes have developed differently in each species
B. humans should not envy what they don't need

Section 4. You are going to read an extract from a book about biking adventure. Seven paragraphs
have been removed from the extract. Choose the most suitable paragraph from the list A-F for each
gap (1-5). There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use.
A. Part of the reason for this had been our physical state. We had suffered a number of minor injuries on
the way up, which had delayed our ascent. Getting to the top had left us with little energy for extra bicycle
riding.
B. However, that afternoon I was barely capable of lifting one foot above the other. In the first section of
our descent there were many large rocks, so we were carrying our bikes down. At this point, I decided to
try to ride the bike down, something that ended in disaster.
C. It was so quiet and calm that I could almost hear the creak of ice in the northern glacier. It was sad to
say goodbye to the peak because we were leaving the adventure before we had really got started on the
more exciting bits.
D. Instead of that, the bike turned over and the large rucksack took off down the slope in a series of giant
hops. Picking up the bike, I wondered whether I'd ever recover the sack.
E. When we'd got everything packed up, we found we had the biggest and heaviest loads we ever seen.
Each of us had one of the huge expedition rucksacks to carry, stuffed to the brim
F. In spite of the sadness we felt, we knew that we had learnt a little more about ourselves and a drop more
about other people. It is only by pushing ourselves to our limits that we get to explore ourselves.

8
BIKES ON KILIMANJARO
We had succeeded in reaching the top of the mountain with our bikes still in working order. The next
challenge was going to be coming down. We melted enough snow to provide us with water for the descent.
This added up to several pints of valuable liquid in plastic containers, which weighed a ton. Sleeping bags,
assorted socks and spare layers of clothing were packed away.
Then the whole lot was dropped into the top of my rucksack. The tent was plastered with ice, which
added to the weight. (1) _______________. And we had the bikes on top of that. When we pulled our bikes
out of the snow to make our conclusive exit from the mountain, the sun was dropping down with increasing
speed towards the black cliff of Uhuru Peak and there was total silence. (2) _______________. Nevertheless,
our immediate objective had been fulfilled; that of cycling to Uhuru Peak. Unfortunately, much excitement
and experiment with the bicycles had to be abandoned.
(3) _______________. But principally, we had not done everything we had planned with our bikes
because of the constraints of time in the modern society 3,000 miles away to which we were bound. Before
starting the descent, we sat down to consider what we had gained from this experience. (4)
_______________. And only by living under stress with others can we form true bonds. It was certainly sad
to leave Kibo summit, but we were in no doubt that there would be other adventures.
Setting off down a mountain towards warmth and safety normally encourages a spring in the step. (5)
_______________. The combined weight of rider, bike and rucksack was over 130 kilograms; a lot for pair
of brakes to hold in normal conditions. I was sitting as far back as possible on the steep slope. I could just
reach the handle bars with outstretched fingers. What I didn't realize until the whole ensemble was travelling
at high speed, was that I couldn't see where I was going. The rucksack I was wearing on my chest had been
pushed upwards into my face, leaving me totally sightless.
After that incident we experimented with other varying modes of downhill travel. Most ended with
wild, uncontrollable slides and somersaults. But with every metre descended we felt better.
