0. ANALYSIS OF TRUSSES BY METHOD OF SECTIONS

We have leant to analyse the forces in a plane truss using the method of joints. In that we have
considered the equilibrium of each joint. The free body diagram of each joint consists of a system
of concurrent forces. We can use two equilibrium equations Σ𝐹𝑥 = 0 and Σ𝐹𝑦 = 0. Hence for solving
the problem easily, we begin with a joint with maximum two unknown forces.

isolating a joint, if we cut through the whole truss,

general case of forces. Then we can use three
equilibrium equations Σ𝐹𝑥 = 0 Σ𝐹𝑦 = 0, and Σ𝑀 = 0.
