1 Afflux Calculation as per IRC-13 for maximum observed HFL of 901.300m

For Streams with non erodible beds, the afflux may be worked out by Molesworth
formula given below: as per IRC:89-1997.

h = V2 1 A2 1
17.87 65.5 A1
Where,
h=Afflux in meters
V-Velocity in un-Obstructed stream in meter per second
A= Un-obstructed sectional area of the river in square meters
a = Sectional area of the river at obstruction in square meters
A1 =Obstructed water way (A-a)

V = Normal velocity of flow = 2.56 m/s

A = Natural water way = 21.45 Sq.m
A1 =Obstructed water way = 20.4 sq.m
Peir
Number of vent 2
width of vent 4.00 m
Number of Main pier 1
Thickness of main pier 0.60 m
Depth of obstacle 1.700 m = 1.020 sq.m

Total Obstructed area (a) = 1.02 sq.m

h = V2 1 A2 1
17.87 65.5 A1

h = 0.200 m
As per the CBIP (1985) volume-1 and IS 6966(Part-I-1989), the allowable afflulux is 0.30m
0.20 < 0.3 Due to submerged structure not effected.

Affluxed flood level = 901.50 m

Hence provide = 901.500 + 0.90 m free board to accommodate afflux generated

Calculation of the normal depth of scour as per IRC-SP13 by using Lacey's Formula.

0.473(Q)1/3
D=
(Ksf)1/3 Here, Ksf= 1.2 Coarse sand
Q = 54.91 cumecs

Depth of Scour D = 1.692

Say D= 1.70 m

IS 6966 ( Part 1 ) : 1989

Depth of Upstream Cut-off Wall:
Upstream Scour depth is taken as 1.5 times the normal Scour depth from High Flood level
Here,
Depth of normal Scour D = 1.70
Therefore 1.5X D = 2.55
Depth of Upstream Cut-off Wall=( Sill Level-( HFL-1.5 x scour depth))
Sill level = 899.60 m
HFL = 901.500 m
Depth of Upstream Cut-off Wall (d1) = 0.65
However provide = 0.00 m
U/s Cut-off Wall = 0.00 m
However provide 0.6m thick cut off wall of 0.00 m depth on upstream side
RL of U/s cut off wall = Sill Level - Depth of U/s cutoff wall
= 899.600 m

Depth of Downstream cut-off wall

Downstream Scour depth is taken as 2 times the normal Scour depth from High Flood level
Here,
Depth of Scour D = 1.70
Therefore 2 x D = 3.40
Depth of Downstream Cut-off wall= (Sill Level- (HFL-2 x Scour Depth))
Sill level = 899.60 m
HFL = 901.50 m
Depth of Downstream Cut-off Wall (d2) = 1.50
say = 1.50 m
D/s Cut-off Wall = 1.50 m 1.50 m
However provide 0.6m thick cut off wall of 1.50 m depth on downstream side
RL of D/s cut off wall = Sill Level - Depth of D/s cutoff wall
= 898.10 m

Key wall Length = 5xh

5.000
Provide 2.5m long key wall on both left bank & right bank as per site condition.
DESIGN OF APRON
Calculation of creep length as per Bligh's Creep Theory for Seepage Flow.

Safety Against Piping or Undermining Creep length L= C x HL

Where,
C = Blighs Creep Co-cflicient.
C = Bligh's Creep Co-cflicient.
( C = 5 to 9 for Boulders, Gravel and Sand mixed ) Say= 7
HL = Maximum Head Loss = FRL - Sill Level i.e= 1.00 m

Length of creep = 7 x 1.000

Total creep length L = 7.00 m

Length of downstream side impervious apron/ Stilling basin:

L1= 2.21 x C ((HL/13)(1/2)
L1 = 4.29
Say L1 = 4.50 m
Downstream apron= 4.50 m
L = 7.00 m
L1 = 4.50 m
Width of body wall b = 5.500 m as per design.
d1 = 1.50 m
Actual Creep
L1 = 4.50 m
Width of body wall b = 5.500 m
d1 = 1.50 m
Actual Creep = (2 xd1)+ L1+b+L2
Actual Creep = 13.00 m > 7.00 m
Safe against minimum Creep Length ,Hence ok.

Check - Safety against piping

i.e HL/L is less than or equal to 1/C.

HL/L = 1.00 / 13.00 0.077 L= actual creep length

1/C = 1 / 7.00 0.143
The safety against piping ,Hence safe.

Check by khosla's theory

b= 10.00 m
d2 = 1.50 m
α = b/d2 = 6.67 m
λ= (1+√1+α2)/(2)
λ= 3.871

Exit gradient = Hs/d2 x (1/π√λ)

Height of storage Hs = 1.00 m
d2 = 1.50 m
π= 3.142
λ= 3.871
Exit gradient = 0.11
Permissible exit gradient for Coarse sand = 0. 20 to 0.167

Type of Soil Safe exit gradient

Shingle 1/4 to 1/5 (0.25 to 0.20)
Coarse Sand 1/5 to 1/6 (0.20 to 0.17)
Fine Sand 1/6 to 1/7 (0.17 to 0.14)

The exit gradient is within the permisible exit gradient for coarse sand ,Hence safe.
No. of vents provided 2 units of 4.00m clear span and 0.60 m thick main pier .
