About Hazardous Waste
Industry has become an essential part of modern society, and waste production is an inevitable
outcome of the developmental activities. A material becomes waste when it is discarded without
expecting to be compensated for its inherent value. These wastes may pose a potential hazard to
the human health or the environment (soil, air, water) when improperly treated, stored,
transported or disposed off or managed. Currently in India even though hazardous wastes,
emanations and effluents are regulated, solid wastes often are disposed off indiscriminately
posing health and environmental risk. In view of this, management of hazardous wastes including
their disposal in environment friendly and economically viable way is very important and
therefore suggestions are made for developing better strategies. Out of the various categories of
the wastes, solid waste contributes a major share towards environmental degradation. The present
paper outlines the nature of the wastes, waste generating industries, waste characterization, health
and environmental implications of wastes management practices, steps towards planning, design
and development of models for effective hazardous waste management, treatment, approaches
and regulations for disposal of hazardous waste. Appraisal of the whole situation with reference
to Indian scenario is attempted so that a better cost-effective strategies for waste management be
evolved in future.
Market Share
The Global Hazardous Waste Management market accounted for $26.35 billion in 2019 and is expected
to reach $48.06 billion by 2027 growing at a CAGR of 7.8% during the forecast period. Some of the key
factors propelling market growth include a growing number of awareness programs for waste
management, rapid urbanization and industrialization along with the rising population, increasing waste
disposal activities, and government initiatives for waste management. However, the requirement of high
capital investments is restricting the market growth.
Market Snapshot
The Indian waste management market is witnessing a healthy growth rate, owing to the high
population density and increased industrial activity, which is generating high amounts of
wastes, both hazardous and non-hazardous.
Circular economy concept is relatively new to India. However, the concept is gaining
prominence. The Indian waste management industry offers huge potential, as only 30% of the
75% recyclable waste is being recycled currently. Shortage of proper policies for collection,
disposal, and recycling and the lack of efficient infrastructure are few of the many reasons
leading to poor waste management in the country.
Many startups are coming up with innovative ideas to manage wastes, as well as convert them
into valuable resources. However, India requires a fair amount of knowledge to tackle the
challenges plaguing this industry.
About the Hazardous Waste Management in India
Initiation of hazardous waste management project in Gujarat, India. The grand concept of 3R
(Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) together with an objective to accomplish zero landfill practice by 2021
in Gujarat, has driven a public and private awareness and initiative to collaboratively work on
developing the hazardous waste management project in India.
Ideal location for hazardous waste management projects, Gujarat is an ideal location for an effective
functioning of the projects, which depend on reasonable volume of generated wastes, waste
characteristics, public acceptance and potential network of the industry for the zero discharge of the
waste. Gujarat is characterized by wide spread industrial establishments, robust infrastructure
development and stable socio-political environment. The industrial development has remained and is
the robust backbone of Gujarat’s economical and industrial prospects and a driving force of a future
economic growth. In the meantime, the rapid industrial development throughout the state has
resulted in generating abundant industrial wastes which need proper care in pollution mitigation and
recycling in and around urban centers of Ahmedabad, Bharuch, Surat etc.
Gujarat State is one of the fastest growing states in India and the leading hazardous waste generating
state. For sustaining the healthy growth of Gujarat State, Operations and sound management of the
hazardous wastes from industry and other household waste is becoming a main concern among the
relevant stakeholders, and realization of 3R(Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) is also needed.
LOCATION ADVANTAGE
The rapid industrial growth in the state has created tremendous pressure on land resources which are
required to be converted into non-agricultural land, particularly in the fringe areas of the urban centers
and in the neighborhood of industrial estates. Another dimension is the industrial pollution. The toxic
effluents from industries are causing damage to crops and neighboring land resources. Tenth Five Year
Plan of the Government of India pointed out that relatively more industrialised states like Gujarat,
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh face problems relating to toxic and hazardous wastes
which include sludge contaminated with heavy metals, wastes from paints, dyes and organic chemical
units and highly acidic and alkaline wastes.
Industries in Gujarat have been classified into Red, Orange and Green, based on the total quantity and
characteristics of different types of hazardous wastes generated, and type of production in industrial
units.
Project Scope
The scope of the project under consideration shall include the following industrial areas as :
• Dahej (SEZ & GIDC)
