Travel is the movement of people or objects (su as airplaines, boats, trains and other conveyance
between relatively distant geographical location

WHAT IS TOURISM INDUSTRY


Tourism -is travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. The World Tourism Organization
defines tourists as people "traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for
not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes”. Comprises the
activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not
more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes.
WHAT IS HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
Hospitality -A term implies whereby a guest who is away from home is welcomed by a host where
basic necessities are provided such as food, beverages and lodging. The term is derived from the
Latin word 'hospitaire', which means 'to receive a guest'.
Characteristics of The Hospitality Industry
- Shift work;
-The physical products of hospitality, e.g. food and drink in a restaurant or the actual hotel room,
are products that are sold at a price to the guests or customers (e.g. the price a guest paid for
renting a hotel room, or the price a customer paid for buying a meal in a restaurant). These are
often regarded as the tangible aspects of hospitality.;
-The qualities of staff and the way they deliver the service are often more important than the
tangible products in making a hospitality experience satisfactory or unsatisfactory or these are the
intangible aspects of hospitality.;
-Hospitality operations run on a 24 hour basis all year round;
Types of Tourists
 Business Tourists: Those travelling for meetings, conventions, conferences or for any
other purpose which is incidental to business and work.

 Leisure Tourist: Those who travel for pleasure, includes travel for vacations, sport,
family, education, health & fitness.

1.5. Application Case Study Exercise (15 minutes)


 Divide students into small groups and give each group a case study related to a hospitality or
tourism business (e.g., a hotel chain, a tour operator, an airline). Each case study should
outline a problem or scenario (e.g., declining customer satisfaction, competition, or
managing a crisis).
 Ask each group to come up with possible solutions to the problem based on what they’ve
learned.
 After 10 minutes, have each group present their findings to the class. This will allow students
to brainstorm together and develop critical thinking skills.
